The ZGMF/A-42S2 Destiny Gundam Spec II is an upgraded version of the ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam introduced in the movie Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom. It is piloted by Shinn Asuka.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

A modified version of the ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam, it was revised secretly by Erica Simmons at the request of Cagalli Yula Athha.[1][2][3] The power system of ZGMF/A-42S2 Destiny Gundam Spec II has been enhanced, resulting in a slightly different color scheme when its Variable Phase Shift Armor is activated compared to that of the Destiny.[1][2][3] Additionally, its cockpit was changed to have the same panoramic monitor as the ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II.[1][3] The Destiny Spec II is newly equipped with a Deuterion Beam Energy Transfer System emitter, allowing it to recharge allied mobile suits, such as the ZGMF-56E2/α Force Impulse Gundam Spec II.[2]

The Destiny Spec II retained the basic armaments of the Destiny, but it also wielded the Type 35 Prototype Advanced Railgun and the A-GXQ754/V2 Zeus Silhouette.[2][3] The Destiny can generate afterimages by utilizing Mirage Colloid particles[4], and while the Destiny Spec II retained this ability, it is now an effect caused by DUPE particles.[2][3] Furthermore, the mobile suit can now create multiple afterimages simultaneously and in a wider area.[2] Unlike the Destiny, the Destiny Spec II's joints can glow red during operation.[2] This glow is said to occur during maximum output, and is caused by a new inner frame with improved performance.[citation needed]

Armaments[]

  • MMI-GAU26 17.5mm CIWS
Mounted in the head, the pair of CIWS are unable to damage Phase Shift Armor, but are suitable for anti-personnel use and to intercept missiles, enemy units, etc.
  • M2000GX High-Energy Long-Range Beam Cannon
Stored on the left side of the backpack, it is Destiny Spec II's most powerful long-range weapon and can easily destroy mobile suits or even a battleship. When in use, the cannon unfolds and swivels underneath the shoulder, while the trigger and guard extend to allow the mobile suit to take manual aim.
  • MMI-714 "Arondight" Beam Sword
Stored on the right side of the backpack, the MMI-714 "Arondight" beam sword is a combination of a physical blade and a laser beam blade. The sword unfolds when in use.
  • MMI-X340 "Palma Fiocina" Palm Beam Cannon
Mounted in each palm, this beam cannon is meant for use in close combat at zero range, and fires a powerful blast capable of penetrating the beam-resisting Femto Technology Armor.
  • RQM60F "Flash-Edge 2" Beam Boomerang
The Destiny Spec II has two RQM60F "Flash-Edge 2" beam boomerangs stored on its shoulders. Besides functioning as throwing weapons, the beam boomerangs' beam blade can also be lengthened to serve as beam sabers.
  • Anti-Beam Shield
A small, expandable anti-beam coated shield mounted on the left arm. In its compacted state, it can be used together with the beam shield.
A beam shield generator is installed on the back of each hand. The generators produce powerful beam shields that can block physical and beam attacks. By combining both generators, a larger beam shield can be created.
  • Type 35 Prototype Advanced Railgun
A prototype handheld weapon that fires high velocity physical projectiles. This railgun is used by Compass mobile suits, including the Destiny Spec II, as a countermeasure against the beam-resistant Femto Technology Armor found on the Black Knight Squad's mobile suits. It is stored on the rear skirt armor when not in use.
  • MA-BAR73/S High-Energy Beam Rifle
The same model of beam rifle as used by the Destiny. This ranged beam weapon was not used during the Foundation Conflict as it is ineffective against the Femto Technology Armor of the Black Knight Squad's mobile suits.

Special Equipment & Features[]

The Destiny Spec II is equipped with an emitter for the Deuterion Beam Energy Transfer System, a wireless energy transfer system that recharges the battery of a mobile suit in a few seconds. When used, a Deuterion beam is emitted from the Destiny Spec II's forehead to recharge the battery of the receiving mobile suit, such as the ZGMF-56E2/α Force Impulse Gundam Spec II.[2][5]
Like the Destiny, the Destiny Spec II is protected by Variable Phase Shift Armor. This armor is capable of automatically changing its strength, color, and power consumption in the field, although these settings must be programmed beforehand.
A powerful propulsion system inherited from the Destiny. It converts the energy from an internal laser into strong light pressure, which is then used as thrust. The system generates a light effect known as "Wings of Light" when activated for high-speed movements.
A Silhouette pack originally developed for the Destiny, but was sealed away due to fears that it was too powerful to be used safely.[3] It consisted of a large linear cannon with two replacement barrels, a backpack assembly with sensors and missile launchers, additional rear skirt and chest armor, and large leg booster units with built-in missile launchers.[2][3] The linear cannon's barrel has to be replaced after each shot, and due to the weapon's huge energy consumption, it can only be operated continuously by a nuclear-powered machine.[2][3][5] The Destiny Spec II has to discard the MMI-714 "Arondight" beam sword and the M2000GX high-energy long-range beam cannon to equip the Zeus Silhouette.[2][3] Additionally, the Zeus Silhouette's parts can combine into an autonomous support unit.[2][3]

History[]

After the Second Alliance-PLANT War, the damaged ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam was passed over to Erica Simmons who was tasked to modify it by Cagalli Yula Athha. This resulted in the ZGMF/A-42S2 Destiny Gundam Spec II, which was used as a technological testbed for a new type of nuclear fusion reactor, and then stored in a secret underground hangar located in Orb Union's Akatsuki Island.[2][6] In C.E. 75, the Destiny Spec II, together with the ZGMF-56E2 Impulse Gundam Spec II and the ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II, were transferred from the underground hangar to the LHM-BB03S Millennium, a ship operated by world peace monitoring organization, Compass. These three mobile suits replaced the mobile suits lost during the earlier Eldore incident, allowing the ship's crew to rescue their kidnapped president, Lacus Clyne, and fight against the opposing Kingdom of Foundation.[2]

During the final battle against the Kingdom of Foundation in space, the Destiny Spec II was piloted by Shinn Asuka, the pilot of the Destiny. With the Destiny Spec II, Shinn took out a number of renegade ZAFT and Foundation ships and mobile suits. He then fought against four of the Black Knight Squad's NOG-M4F Rud-ro.As, and destroyed three of them after overwhelming them with afterimages of the Destiny Spec II. Following this, Shinn and the Destiny Spec II joined Athrun Zala/Meyrin Hawke and the ZGMF-X191M2 ∞ Justice Gundam Type II/AMGS-X18P Cavalier Aifrid, and Lunamaria Hawke and her METEOR-equipped ZGMF-56E2/α Force Impulse Gundam Spec II to attack the rebuilt Requiem superweapon, combining with the A-GXQ754/V2 Zeus Silhouette en route. Upon reaching Requiem, the Destiny Spec II destroyed the superweapon with a single shot from the Zeus Silhouette's linear cannon.[2]

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The Destiny Gundam Spec II retained the head crest of the Destiny Gundam, which has the text "X42S DUE".
  • In some scenes of the movie, the Destiny Spec II is shown with two Type 35 Prototype Advanced Railguns, with one stored on the rear skirt armor. However, its launch sequence only shows it carrying one railgun in hand.
