The ZGMF/A-42S2 Destiny Gundam Spec II is a mobile suit introduced in the movie Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom. It is piloted by Shinn Asuka.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
The ZGMF/A-42S2 Destiny Gundam Spec II is an upgrade of the old ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam, equipped with various new technologies to enhance its combat performance. Its colors have been slightly altered due to the increased strength of the Variable Phase Shift Armor, and it now uses a modern panoramic cockpit.[1]
One significant upgrade of the Destiny Spec II is a Deuterion Beam Energy Transfer System transmitter on its forehead, allowing it to recharge allied mobile suits, such as the ZGMF-56E2/α Force Impulse Gundam Spec II. Additionally, the Destiny Spec II has a new inner frame capable of improved performance, which glows bright red at maximum power output.[1]
Armaments[]
- MMI-GAU26 17.5mm CIWS
- Mounted in the head, the pair of CIWS are unable to damage PS armor, but are suitable for anti-personnel use and to intercept missiles, enemy units, etc.
- MA-BAR73/S High-Energy Beam Rifle
- Developed based on the ZGMF-X56S Impulse's beam rifle, it is the Destiny's main mid-ranged weapon. As the beam rifle is powered by the suit's Hyper-Deuterion Engine, it has superior firepower and rate of fire. When not in use, it could be stored on the rear waist armor. The Destiny Spec II does not utilize this weapon however, in favor of the Type 35 Prototype Advanced Railgun during the Foundation Conflict.
- Anti-Beam Shield
- A small, expandable anti-beam coated shield that is mounted on the left arm. In its compacted state, it can be used together with the beam shield.
- MX2351 "Solidus Fulgor" Beam Shield Generator
- Like its predecessor Destiny and its sister unit Legend, the Destiny Spec II has an MX2351 "Solidus Fulgor" beam shield generator on the back of each hand. The generators produce powerful beam shields that can block physical and beam attacks. One beam shield was enough to stop the combined power of a GFAS-X1 Destroy Gundam's three "Super Scylla" multi-phase beam cannons. By combining both generators, a larger beam shield can be created.
- M2000GX High-Energy Long-Range Beam Cannon
- Stored on the left side of the backpack, it is Destiny Spec II's most powerful long-range weapon and can destroy an MS or a battleship with a single shot. It is developed from the ZGMF-X56S/γ Blast Impulse Gundam's M2000F "Kerberos" high-energy long-range beam cannon, and thanks to the Destiny Spec II's Hyper-Deuterion Engine, it has a higher firing rate, output, and firing range. When in use, the cannon unfolds and swivels underneath the Destiny Spec II's shoulder while a trigger and guard extend to allow the Destiny Spec II to take manual aim.
- MMI-X340 "Palma Fiocina" Palm Beam Cannon
- A unique feature of the Destiny Spec II is its two MMI-X340 "Palma Fiocina" palm beam cannons. Meant for use in close quarters combat, the beam cannon fires powerful blasts capable of destroying Femto Technology Armor.
- RQM60F "Flash-Edge 2" Beam Boomerang
- The Destiny Spec II has two RQM60F "Flash-Edge 2" beam boomerangs stored on its shoulders. They are upgraded forms of the ZGMF-X56S/β Sword Impulse Gundam's RQM60 "Flash-Edge" beam boomerangs and utilizes a simplified version of the DRAGOON System. The Destiny Spec II's beam boomerangs have the unique ability to be used as beam sabers by lengthening their beam blades. Shinn uses these weapons in a variety of ways, such as using them to distract opponents while he closes in for a close-range attack or to destroy several enemy units in its trajectory.
- MMI-714 "Arondight" Beam Sword
- Stored on the right side of the backpack, the foldable MMI-714 "Arondight" beam sword is powerful enough to slice a massive Destroy in two. Despite its name, the weapon is actually a combination of a physical blade and a beam cutting edge. Developed from Sword Impulse's MMI-710 "Excalibur" anti-ship beam sword, this weapons is Shinn's weapon-of-choice for close combat. The Destiny Spec II has a white variant of the weapon instead of Destiny's original light blue color.
- Type 35 Prototype Advanced Railgun
- A prototype handheld railgun that fires high velocity physical projectiles, this weapon was designed to combat the Femto-Technology Armor found on the Black Knights' mobile suits. Multiple copies of this weapon were provided to Compass mobile suits fighting against the Kingdom of Foundation, including the Destiny Spec II. The weapon is stored on the back skirt when not in use.
Special Equipment & Features[]
- The Destiny Spec II is powered by a Hyper-Deuterion engine, a hybrid of the nuclear reactor with the Deuterion Beam Energy Transfer System.[2][3]
- The Destiny Spec II has been upgraded to use a miniaturized version of the Deuterion Beam Energy Transfer System found on the LHM-BB01 Minerva, with an emitter on its forehead to recharge allied mobile suits equipped with a Deuterion Beam receiver. It was used to recharge ZGMF-56E2/α Force Impulse Spec II during the Foundation Conflict.
- A device built into the mobile suit to counter the effects of Neutron Jammers. It allows the Destiny Spec II to use its Hyper-Deuterion Engine without risk of being shut down.
- Operating System
- The Destiny Spec II uses the Gunnery United Nuclear-Dueterion Advanced Maneuver operating system.
- An improved version of Phase Shift Armor, the VPS Armor is capable of automatically changing its strength, color, and power consumption in the field, although these settings must be programmed beforehand.
- "Voiture Lumiere" Propulsion System
- Unlike the "Voiture Lumiere" propulsion system used by GSX-401FW Stargazer Gundam, the one installed in Destiny Spec II's wings is a combat variant that uses an internal laser instead of solar winds or external power beam. It converts this energy into strong light pressure, which is then used as thrust. The system generates a light effect known as "Wings of Light" when activated for high-speed movements. It also enables the creation of after-images when used alongside the Mirage Colloid System. Shinn frequently utilizes both systems in conjunction with the "Arondight" beam sword, rushing into close combat and impaling his target with the sword. The Destiny Spec 2's "Voiture Lumiere" system was upgraded to enhance speed and afterimages to the point where it can create "clones" of the mobile suit. It is able to outmaneuver similar mobility units like the Black Knight Rud-ro.A squad's own "Voiture Lumiere" system. The "Voiture Lumiere"'s speed, combined with the after-images of the Mirage Colloid system, also allows the suit to evade the DRAGOON System's multi-directional attacks.
- Mirage Colloid System
- Activated when the Wings of Light are used, the system spreads Mirage Colloid particles, leaving a trail of afterimages that can confuse enemy pilots and make the Destiny Gundam Spec II difficult to target. The Destiny Spec II's Mirage Colloid system was upgraded with a new type of particle called Dupe Particles, allowing it to create multiple moving illusions of itself that can accompany the Destiny Spec II when the Wings of Light are active. The system is capable of generating dozens of illusions simultaneously, but the maximum number the Destiny Spec II can produce is currently unknown.
- The Zeus Silhouette is a heavy weapons Silhouette Pack designed for the Destiny Gundam Spec II. It consists of a large linear cannon system with two replacement barrels, a backpack sensor assembly with missile launchers, additional chest armor, and large leg booster units. Both the Arondight anti-ship sword and the M2000GX beam cannon must be jettisoned for the Zeus Silhouette to dock. When not equipped by the Destiny Gundam Spec II, the Zeus Silhouette's parts can combine into an autonomous support mobile armor.
History[]
In C.E 75 The Destiny Gundam Spec II was one of three mobile suits secretly upgraded by Erica Simmons on Akatsuki Island in the Orb Union. These upgrades were intended to evaluate a possible new fusion reactor and equipment, as well as to bolster Compass' forces in case of an emergency. This later became important when the crew of the LHM-BB03S Millennium needed to acquire new mobile suits to replace their losses at Eldore, in order to enact a plan to rescue Lacus Clyne from Kingdom of Foundation captivity at the space fortress Artemis.[4]
Shinn Asuka piloted the Destiny Spec II to defend the Millennium against attacks from not only a renegade ZAFT fleet but also the Foundation Fleet and the Black Knights' NOG-M4F Rud-ro.As. The Destiny Gundam Spec II singlehandedly held back the four Rud-ro.A's, later destroying three of them after creating a large number of after-images to overwhelm the Black Knights. Following this, the Destiny Gundam Spec II joined with the ZGMF-X191M2 ∞ Justice Gundam Type II, and the ZGMF-56E2/α Force Impulse Spec II to attack Requiem, combining with the A-GXQ754/V2 Zeus Silhouette en route. Upon reaching Requiem, the Destiny Gundam Spec II used its Linear Cannon to launch a powerful attack, ultimately destroying the superweapon and neutralizing the threat it posed.[4]

Notes & Trivia[]
- Externally, the only notable changes of the Destiny Spec II over the previous Destiny is the darker overall saturation of colors, the light soft blue color on the chest replaced with a pure white, and the yellow v-fin becoming soft grey like the rest of the body color. In-universe, this was revealed to be in honor of the late Rey Za Burrel and his ZGMF-X666S Legend Gundam.
- The Destiny Spec II still retains the Destiny Gundam's previous model number "X42S DUE" on its head crest, likely because the unit is an upgrade of the already existing Destiny Gundam and not a new unit.
- DUE is the Italian word for the number "two".
- In the movie, the Destiny Spec II is shown wielding two railguns, with one stored on the back skirt. However, its launch sequence only shows it carrying one railgun on the hand.
