The ZGMF/A-262PD-P Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam is a mobile suit introduced in the animated film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom. It is piloted by Kira Yamato and co-piloted by Lacus Clyne.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
The ZGMF/A-262PD-P Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam is the combination of the ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II and the MDE262S Proud Defender support craft, replacing the Super DRAGOON Mobile Weapon Wings and giving it enhanced combat ability. The main feature of the Proud Defender is its ability to deploy nanoparticles for both defense and offense, including creating a spherical barrier that can block attacks from all directions, and an electric attack that can destroy enemy targets within a large area. Furthermore, the additional output from the Proud Defender enabled the Mighty Strike Freedom to use its ultimate weapon, the EQM-Y148 Convergent Heavy Nucleon Beam Cannon "Disruptor", which the Strike Freedom Type II was incapable of. Finally, the Proud Defender also carried the AVS "Futsunomitama", a physical sword for the mobile suit to use.
Armaments[]
- EQM-Y148 Convergent Heavy Nucleon Beam Cannon "Disruptor"
- An advanced beam weapon hidden behind the Mighty Strike Freedom's forehead crest, it is only usable when the Proud Defender is equipped due to its immense power requirements. It fires a thin, focused beam that can disintegrate atoms while also suppressing nuclear fission, meaning that objects exposed to the beam break down and dissipate without causing an explosive reaction. The Disruptor's unique properties allow it to destroy even Femto Technology Armor, and 80% of its output can easily slice through the remains of the space fortress Messiah.[1] Regarded as the ultimate weapon that cannot be defended against, extreme caution is required when handling it and its use requires approval from both Compass president, Lacus Clyne, and supreme commander, Kira Yamato.[2][3]
- AVS "Futsunomitama"
- A physical katana stored on the Proud Defender and was originally designed for the ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam. It is equipped to effectively counter the Kingdom of Foundation's Femto Technology Armor, which resists beam weaponry. Similar to his preferences with beam sabers, Kira is shown to dual wield the Futsunomitama alongside a "Acuta Lacerta" beam saber.[1]
- MMI-GAU2A "Picus II" 31mm CIWS
- Mounted in the head, the pair of CIWS guns are close-range weapons designed for intercepting incoming missiles and enemy units.
- AQM/S-2028 "Tvashtr" Hyper Impulse Gun
- A high-output, large-caliber beam gun mounted in the abdomen, its muzzle seem to be protected by VPS Armor. The beam fired from this weapon is probably the second strongest among the suit's beam weaponry, just behind the Disruptor.
- MMI-X220 "Egregie" Beam Shield
- Generated from the forearms' beam shield generators, the pair of beam shields can effectively block most beam and physical attacks.
- MA-M03D "Acuta Lacerta" Beam Saber
- The suit's primary close combat weapons, a pair are stored atop the "Volans Hasta" railguns. These beam sabers are also used by the ZGMF-X191M2 ∞ Justice Gundam Type II. The two beam sabers can be combined into a twin-edged beam saber known as the "Ambidextrous Halberd." However, Kira prefers to dual wield the sabers, utilizing his expertise in executing high-speed melee attacks.
- MMI-M16XE5 "Volans Hasta" Railgun
- A pair of railguns mounted on the suit's waist, they unfolded when in use.
- MA-M21KF High-Energy Beam Rifle
- A pair of high-energy beam rifles that can combine to form one long-range beam rifle. This allows the rifles to be used to hit enemy units in various ranges, enhancing Kira's ability to take out multiple targets simultaneously with two beam rifles instead of one. When not in use, the rifles are stored on the side of the railguns. Additionally, its combined form can be stored on the rear skirt armor.
Special Equipment & Features[]
- A support craft developed by Compass, the Proud Defender serves as the backpack for the Mighty Strike Freedom. Originally intended for the STTS-909 Rising Freedom Gundam, it was adjusted for the Strike Freedom Type II due to developmental delays. Its major defining feature is the ability to use telepathically controlled nanoparticles to produce a high-voltage electrical current to destroy enemies. When used in conjunction with the mobile suit's Multi Lock-on System, this electric attack has a wide effective range. The nanoparticles can also be used defensively to create a spherical barrier capable of blocking attacks from all directions. The Proud Defender was initially designed to operate autonomously, but due to issues with its docking system which cannot be fully resolved in time for the Foundation Conflict, it was hastily retrofitted with a cockpit to enable manual fine-tuning. In the heat of the conflict's final battle, Lacus Clyne piloted the Proud Defender and delivered it to Kira, who detached the Strike Freedom Type II's Super DRAGOON Mobile Weapon Wings so that the mobile suit can dock with the support craft.
- Like the Strike Freedom Type II, the Mighty Strike Freedom is equipped with this system to target and attack multiple enemies simultaneously. To use this system effectively, the pilot must possess high spatial awareness, a trait that is rare even among Coordinators. While serving as the co-pilot, Lacus Clyne in SEED Mode is capable of utilizing the system to lock on to a massive number of targets, enabling the telepathically controlled nanoparticles of the Proud Defender to be used for a large-scale electric attack.
- An improved version of Phase Shift Armor, the VPS Armor is capable of automatically changing its strength, color, and power consumption in the field, although these changes must be programmed beforehand.
History[]
During an operation by Compass to destroy the Requiem superweapon rebuilt by the Kingdom of Foundation, Kira Yamato piloted the ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II and fought both the NOG-M1A1 Black Knight Squad Shi-ve.A and the NOG-M2D1/E Black Knight Squad Cal-re.A. The Strike Freedom Type II was eventually overwhelmed by the two powerful enemy machines, and just as it was about to be defeated by the Shi-ve.A, the ZGMF-MM07 Z'Gok arrived to block the attack. Immediately after, Lacus Clyne arrived with the MDE262S Proud Defender and Kira detached the Strike Freedom Type II's Super DRAGOON Mobile Weapon Wings to dock with the support craft, forming the ZGMF/A-262PD-P Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam.
The Mighty Strike Freedom easily blocked a massive barrage of beams and missiles from the Cal-re.A's AMO-01 Ziggurat support crafts with its nanoparticle barrier. Undeterred, the Cal-re.A attacked again with its Sahasrabhuja remote weapon pods and beam fire from the Ziggurats, but they were all ineffective against the nanoparticle barrier. Lacus then unleased a large-scale electric attack using the Mighty Strike Freedom's nanoparticles, destroying all missiles fired from the Ziggurats, disabling the Sahasrabhuja remote weapon pods, and also incapacitating the combined Foundation and rogue ZAFT fleets.
The Mighty Strike Freedom then cut through the remains of the Messiah space fortress with the Disruptor, eliminating all three Ziggurats hidden behind Messiah. In the ensuing duel with Cal-re.A, the Mighty Strike Freedom destroyed the enemy machine's left shoulder and arm with a close-range Disruptor shot, and eventually impaled its cockpit's right side with the Futsunomitama, leading to Cal-re.A's destruction. The Foundation Conflict then came to end with Compass and its allies emerging victorious.[4]

Notes & Trivia[]
- The "Futsunomitama" is named after the "Futsunomitama no Tsurugi" divine sword in Japanese mythology.
- According to Mitsuo Fukuda, the Mighty Strike Freedom is not only named after the classic tokusatsu series Mighty Jack (which had a few episodes converted into a movie and dubbed in English by Sandy Frank Productions and aired on an early episode of the series Mystery Science Theater 3000) but also the main form of the titular Kamen Rider Kuuga.
- The Mighty Strike Freedom is the only unit of the Freedom Gundam series to not use its signature Full Burst Mode in its show. This was because the high-energy beam rifles, "Tvashtr" hyper impulse gun, and the right "Volans Hasta" railgun either sustained damage or got destroyed during its skirmish with the Cal-re.A while it was still the Strike Freedom Type II.
- The Mighty Strike Freedom is also the only Freedom unit to carry a physical melee weapon.
- The Disruptor located behind the Mighty Strike Freedom's forehead crest resembles the MSZ-010 ΖΖ Gundam's High Mega Cannon, even sharing the same weakness of having high energy consumption, though, unlike the ZZ Gundam, the Mighty Strike Freedom is not completely drained after use.
- During the Disruptor's firing sequence, the animation briefly turned into inverted colors. The reason for this effect is because the Disruptor's beam is invisible and can only be seen in inverted colors.
Video Game-specific[]
- In Gundam Breaker 4, the Mighty Strike Freedom can be obtained on a "Post-Launch Update" on October 9, 2024.
- The Mighty Strike Freedom's inclusion was met with criticism as its Burst Actions did not feel representative of the source material, the Disrupter Cannon simply causing enemies directly in a line to break with no associated animation and the Proud Defender firing off homing lightning bolts to damage enemies. Additionally, its Futsunomitama was exclusive as an EX Skill. Following an update patch, these issues were rectified, with the Disruptor now generating a sweeping thin beam with a negative photo effect displaying to break enemies within its field of vision and the Proud Defender now damaging enemies similar to the Quantum Burst. Additionally, the Futsunomitama was made an available melee weapon alongside the beam rifle's sound effects being corrected.
