The ZGMF-X Series was a series of Mobile Suits created by ZAFT introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
Overview and Technology[]
The ZGMF-X Series was an experimental military development project, which implemented nuclear reactors into 5 Gundam-type Mobile Suits (the YMF-X000A Dreadnought Gundam was a testbed unit created for testing the nuclear reactor and N-Jammer Canceller technology). To enable the use of nuclear energy, the Mobile Suits were equipped with the newly developed Neutron Jammer Canceller, which generated a field that counteracted the Neutron Jammer effect, making nuclear fissions possible and nullified radio disturbances. Thanks to the nuclear reactor, these mobile suits have a virtually unlimited operation time. The units were also equipped with technology stolen from the Earth Alliance's G Project, including Phase Shift armor and beam weaponry, while also incorporating new technologies such as the Multi Lock-on System and the DRAGOON system.[1][2][3]
History[]
Following the theft of four of the five G Project mobile suits,[4] ZAFT set about reverse engineering their systems and weaponry. During the development, two ZGMF-600 GuAIZs were modified to test new technologies: the YFX-600R GuAIZ Experimental Firearms Type was used for testing new weapons and was also the first ZAFT mobile suit to have Phase Shift armor, while the Dreadnought Gundam was designed to test both the N-Jammer Canceller technology and DRAGOON system. After testing was complete, five Gundams were designed - Justice, Freedom, Regenerate, Testament and Providence. The Testament was used to test the usefulness of Striker Pack technology, while the Providence, originally a close-combat machine, was changed to a DRAGOON system-use machine.
In May of C.E. 71, the Freedom was stolen by Kira Yamato with help from Lacus Clyne.[1] Athrun Zala was later given the Justice, but soon defected to the Three Ships Alliance.[5][6] The Regenerate was assigned to ZAFT special forces officer Ash Gray and stationed at GENESIS Alpha. The Testament was also stationed at GENESIS Alpha, but was later stolen by Earth Alliance infiltrators while Ash and the Regenerate were out on a mission. Finally, the Providence was assigned to Rau Le Creuset during the Second Battle of Jachin Due.[7]
By the end of the First Alliance-PLANT War, the Justice and Providence were destroyed, while the Freedom was heavily damaged in battle against the Providence.[8] The Freedom was later recovered, secretly repaired and stored in the Orb Union, before it was reactivated in late C.E. 73.[9] It went on to play an important role in the Second Alliance-PLANT War, before it was destroyed during Operation Angel Down.[10][11][12] As for the Regenerate, it was heavily damaged in battle against the MBF-P02 Gundam Astray Red Frame "Powered Red" and the MBF-P03secondL Gundam Astray Blue Frame Second L before the end of the first war, but its Core Unit and Ash survived and were recovered by Earth Alliance. Prior to the outbreak of the second war, the Earth Alliance deployed a modified Testament for special operations, but it was eventually defeated by the ZGMF-X12D Gundam Astray Out Frame D, after which Kaite Madigan took the mobile suit as his own.
To overcome the numerical and technological limitations of the Junius Treaty, which included a ban on military usage of nuclear fission reactor and Neutron Jammer Canceller, ZAFT created two new mobile suit lines: the New Millennium Series of mass production mobile suits, and the Second Stage Series, which produced five new Gundams that incorporated new technologies derived from the ZGMF-X Series, which was retroactively refered to as the First Stage Series.[13]
Mobile Suits[]
- ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam
- ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam
- ZGMF-X11A Regenerate Gundam
- ZGMF-X12A Testament Gundam
- ZGMF-X13A Providence Gundam
This unit was used as a testbed unit for testing nuclear technology, but was later dismantled and obtained by the Junk Guild.
This unit was built from spare parts of the Testament Gundam, but is considered a completely different unit.
