The ZGMF-X191M2 ∞ Justice Gundam Type II is a mobile suit introduced in the animated film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom. It is piloted by Athrun Zala.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

The ZGMF-X191M2 ∞ Justice Gundam Type II is a modified version of the ZGMF-X19A ∞ Justice Gundam, secretly revised by Erica Simmons at the request of Cagalli Yula Athha. It was originally used to test the abilities of the AMGS-X18P Cavalier Aifrid support unit. Its resemblance to the original ∞ Justice is evident in features like the MMI-S1M7 "Tonitrus" Heavy Beam Cutters located on the shins, as well as the MX2002 Carrier Beam Shield, which also stores a claw and a beam blade. Notable new armaments included the MA-F2002 "Spitze Schwert" Beam Horn on the head, and the back-mounted M2X32E Volantes lifter, a successor to the EW454F Ootori striker pack developed by Morgenröte. The Volantes not only increases the ∞ Justice Type II's mobility and makes the mobile suit suitable for super high-speed battle, but can also function as a stand-alone assault weapon. Like the ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II, the ∞ Justice Type II features a panoramic monitor in the cockpit, and is protected by Variable Phase Shift Armor.[1]

Armaments[]

  • MA-F2002 "Spitze Schwert" Beam Horn
Replacing the tall sensor spine from the ∞ Justice's head, the beam horn is located above the visor of the ∞ Justice Type II, it can emit a high-energy beam blade and can be used as a surprise weapon to catch its target off guard.
  • MMI-GAU4 "Sagittus II" 20mm CIWS
A pair of CIWS guns are mounted in the head, one on each side and are improved version of the MMI-GAU1 "Sagittus" used by the ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam. It is primarily used for shooting down incoming missiles and enemy units at close range.
  • MMI-GAU17E "Hageleisen" 20mm CIWS
A pair of CIWS guns mounted under the chest intakes. Like the head-mounted CIWS, they are mainly used for shooting down incoming missiles and enemy units at close range.
  • MA-M03D "Acuta Lacerta" Beam Saber
The suit's main close combat weapon. A pair of them are stored on the side skirt armor. These are also used by the Strike Freedom Type II. The two beam sabers can be combined into a twin-edged beam saber, known as 'Ambidextrous Halberd'. Athrun prefers to use the beam sabers in this form.
Handheld or mounted on the left forearm, it is a solid shield that can generate a beam shield and is equipped with two other offensive weapons, making it capable of both defending and attacking.
  • EEQ8 Grapple Stinger
One of the two offensive weapons mounted in the shield is a grappling claw that can be shot out on a line. It can be used in multiple ways such as ramming a target from a distance, capturing a target with the claw, or restraining a target using the attached cable.
  • RQM55 "Shining Edge" Beam Boomerang
The second offensive weapon mounted in the shield; it has two functions. It can function as a beam boomerang that can move in space just as it does in the atmosphere, due to the interaction between the beam blade’s force field and the surrounding matter. Additionally, it can function as a handheld or shield-mounted beam saber.
  • MMI-S1M7 "Tonitrus" Beam Heavy Slashing Leg
A unique weapon mounted on each lower leg that replaces ∞ Justice's MR-Q15A "Griffon" beam blade. When activated, a beam blade is generated between the knee and foot, and it is used during kicks.
  • MA-M50E3F High-Energy Long-Range Beam Cannon
A pair of beam cannons mounted on the Volantes.
  • AIM-1913D AGMRAAM "Scorpio"
Missile launchers mounted on the Volantes' wing roots.
  • MA-R259 Beam Riser
The beam risers are the main armed wings of the Volantes. They have two main modes; the "Gun Mode" is its default form where they are closed for ranged combat using its wingtip beam guns, and the "Slasher Mode" where the wings open up into an "X" shape, with the wing beam cutters active.
  • Type 35 Prototype Advanced Railgun
A prototype handheld weapon that fires high velocity physical projectiles, it is a countermeasure against the beam-resistant Femto Technology Armor found on the Black Knight Squad's mobile suits. It is stored on the rear waist armor when not in use. This weapon is also used by Compass mobile suits.
  • MA-M1911 High-Energy Beam Rifle
A beam rifle that can be used by the ∞ Justice Type II. It was replaced by the prototype advanced railgun during the Foundation Conflict as it was ineffective against the Femto Technology Armor.

Special Equipment & Features[]

  • M2X32E Volantes
The ∞ Justice Type II's back-mounted lifter unit, it is armed with two MA-M50E3F High-Energy Long-Range Beam Cannons, two AGMRAAM Scorpio missile launchers, and Beam Riser wings that are capable of both ranged and melee combat. When required, the Volantes can separate from the ∞ Justice Type II and operates as an independent unit. It can also be equipped by the ZGMF-MM07 Z'Gok and the AMGS-X18P Cavalier Aifrid.
Due to Athrun's clandestine mission, the Z'Gok was created as a camouflage armor that hides the ∞ Justice Type II within it. Although the added bulk covered the ∞ Justice Type II's weapons, the Z'Gok compensates with its own anti-armor slashers, heavy ion cannons, and surface-to-air missile launchers. Additionally, it can dock with the Volantes to access its weapons and thrusters.
The ∞ Justice Type II is powered by a Hyper-Deuterion engine, a hybrid of the nuclear reactor with the Deuterion Beam Energy Transfer System.
A device built into the ∞ Justice Type II to counter the effects of Neutron Jammers, which gives the ∞ Justice Type II the ability to use its Hyper-Deuterion Engine without the risk of being shut down.
The VPS Armor is capable of automatically changing its strength, color, and power consumption in the field, although this must be programmed beforehand.

History[]

Due to the clandestine nature of Athrun Zala's activities, the ZGMF-X191M2 ∞ Justice Gundam Type II was hidden within the ZGMF-MM07 Z'Gok for most of its deployment during the Foundation Conflict.[2]

During the battle against the Kingdom of Foundation near the crash site of the space fortress Messiah on the Moon, Athrun and the Z'Gok blocked an attack by Shura Serpentine's NOG-M1A1 Shi-ve.A meant for Kira Yamato and the ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II, sacrificing the Z'Gok armor in the process and revealing the ∞ Justice Type II hidden within. Athrun then dueled the Shi-ve.A using the ∞ Justice Type II. Taking advantage of the AMGS-X18P Cavalier Aifrid Unit-02's system, Cagalli Yula Athha in her MBF-02 Strike Rouge was able to remote control the ∞ Justice Type II temporarily[3], enabling Athrun to fool Shura and destroy the Shi-ve.A's right arm with the Type 35 Prototype Advanced Railgun. In a subsequent attack, the Shi-ve.A cut off the ∞ Justice Type II's right arm. Afterwards, Athrun activated SEED mode and performed a surprise attack with the ∞ Justice Type II's "Spitze Schwert" Beam Horn, cleaving the Shi-ve.A in half from the top down.[2]

The ∞ Justice Type II with the Cavalier Aifrid Unit-01 later participated in the assault on the rebuilt Requiem superweapon alongside the A-GXQ754/V2 Zeus Silhouette-equipped ZGMF/A-42S2 Destiny Gundam Spec II, and the METEOR-docked ZGMF-56E2/α Force Impulse Gundam Spec II. After Requiem's destruction and subsequent cessation of hostilities, Athrun and the ∞ Justice Type II reunited with Cagalli and her Strike Rouge on Earth.[2]

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The ∞ Justice Type II retained the head crest of the original ∞ Justice, which has the text "X-19A DICIANNOVE".
  • The X-shaped wing of the Volantes resembles the T-65B X-Wing Starfighter featured in the Star Wars series. This follows the SEED series' recurring design and storytelling homages to Star Wars and Star Trek due to Chiaki Morisawa and Mitsuo Fukada being fans of western Science Fiction.
  • The emergence of the ∞ Justice Type II from the wreckage of the ZGMF-MM07 Z'Gok evokes a similar situation from Gundam Build Fighters Try, where the BG-011B Build Burning Gundam emerges from a Dom's wreckage.
    • According to director Mitsuo Fukuda, the ∞ Justice Type II's disguise was, at one time, meant to be based on the MSM-04 Acguy, but Gundam Build Fighters had already used the Acguy more extensively.
  • In a slightly unused scenario planned for the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom movie, Murrue Ramius had suggested a counter-tactic where Athrun would say on the intercom to Cagalli or Meyrin to remote control the mobile suit against the Black Knight Squad's mind reading tactics.[4]
  • Both HGCE ∞ Justice Gundam Type II Gunpla and the Metal Robot Tamashii figure included the MA-M1911 High-Energy Beam Rifle instead of the Type 35 Prototype Advanced Railgun.
