The ZGMF-X191M2 ∞ Justice Gundam Type II is a mobile suit introduced in the animated film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom. It is piloted by Athrun Zala.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

An upgraded version of the ZGMF-X19A ∞ Justice Gundam, modified by Erica Simmons at the request of Cagalli Yula Athha. Originally made to test out the performance of the AMGS-X18P Cavalier Aifrid support craft, the Type II features enhanced performance over its predecessor. External changes to the mobile suit include a new head, new larger shoulders, changed skirt armors and legs, and the replacement of its signature horn's sensors with a beam blade emitter. A new panoramic cockpit has also been installed to improve the pilot's situational awareness.

The main change to the Type II is the new M2X32E "Volantes" 4-winged sub-flight lifter developed off data from the EW454F Ootori Striker pack. It features enhanced flight performance and improved firepower, including additional beam saber emitters and missile launchers.

Armaments[]

  • MA-F2002 “Spitze Schwert” Beam Horn
Replacing the tall sensor spine from the ∞ Justice, the beam horn is located above the visor of the ∞ Justice Type II, it can emit a high-energy beam blade and can be used as a surprise weapon to catch its target off guard.
  • MMI-GAU4 “Sagittus II” 20mm CIWS
A pair of CIWS guns are mounted in the head, one on each side and are improved version of the MMI-GAU1 "Sagittus" used by the Justice. It is primarily used for shooting down incoming missiles and enemy units at close range. Due to improvements in the CIWS ammunition, they have higher initial velocity, better armor-piercing capability, and reduced friction due to a new coating. These enhancements increase the stopping power by 25%, while the ammunition capacity is increased by 20% due to their smaller size.
  • MMI-GAU17E “Hageleisen” 20mm Twin CIWS
A pair of coaxial top and bottom barrels is mounted on each side of the chest, separated by the chest intake, for a total of four barrels. They are improved versions of those used by TFA-4DE GAZuOOT. Like the head-mounted CIWS, they are mainly used for shooting down incoming missiles and enemy units at close range.
  • MA-M03D "Acuta Lacerta" Beam Saber
The suit's main close combat weapon. A pair of them are stored on the side skirt armor. These are also used by the Strike Freedom Type II and are an enhanced version of the Super Lacertas used by the ∞ Justice and Strike Freedom. The two beam sabers can be combined into a twin-edged beam saber, known as 'Ambidextrous Halberd'. Unlike Kira, Athrun commonly prefers to use the beam sabers in this form.
  • MA-M1911 High-Energy Beam Rifle
A significantly improved version of ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam's MA-M20 "Lupus" beam rifle. It can be stored on the rear skirt armor when not in use. Although not featured in the movie, this weapon replaces the prototype advanced railgun in the HGCE Gunpla kit.
Handheld or mounted on the left forearm, it is a solid shield that can generate a beam shield and is equipped with two other offensive weapons, making it capable of both defending and attacking. The shield's shape can be modified to mount other weapons.
  • EEQ8 Grapple Stinger
One of the two offensive weapons mounted in the shield is a grappling claw that can be shot out on a line. It can be used in multiple ways such as ramming a target from a distance, capturing a target with the claw, or restraining a target using the attached cable.
  • RQM55 "Shining Edge" Beam Boomerang
The second offensive weapon mounted in the shield; it has two functions. It can function as a beam boomerang that can move in space just as it does in the atmosphere, due to the interaction between the beam blade’s force field and the surrounding matter. Additionally, it can function as a handheld or shield-mounted beam saber.
  • MMI-S1M7 “Tonitrus” Beam Heavy Slashing Leg
A unique weapon mounted on each lower leg that replaces ∞ Justice's MR-Q15A "Griffon" beam blade. When activated, a beam blade is generated between the knee and foot, and it is used during kicks and can deflect incoming beam boomerangs. This melee weapon reflects the operation records of the GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam and can only be used effectively by a highly skilled pilot such as Athrun.
  • MA-M50E3F Beam Cannon
A pair of rapid-fire beam cannons are mounted on the Volantes. These are the same variants the Fatum-01 backpack had and are improved versions of the Fatum-00's "Fortis" beam cannon.
  • AIM-1913D AGMRAAM "Scorpio"
Missile launchers mounted on the wing roots of the Volantes.
  • MA-R259 Beam Riser
The Beam Riser are the main armed wings of the Volantes. They have two main modes; the "Gun Mode" is its default form where they are closed to more effectively use its wingtip beam guns for ranged combat, and the "Slasher Mode" where the wings open up into an "X" shape, with the wing beam cutters active.
  • Type 35 Prototype Advanced Railgun
A prototype high-powered handheld railgun, designed to combat the Femto Technology Armor found on the Black Knight Squad's mobile suits. Multiple units of this weapon are provided to Compass mobile suits fighting against the Kingdom of Foundation, including the ∞ Justice Type II, which carries a single unit on its back skirt.

Special Equipment & Features[]

  • M2X32E Volantes Sub-flight Lifter
The ∞ Justice Type II's new sub-flight lifter, succeeding the ∞ Justice's Fatum-01. It is equipped with various weapons including its two MA-M50E3F Beam Cannons, two AGMRAAM Scorpio missile launchers, and its multi-mode Beam Riser wings capable of both mid-range shooting and melee combat. It can also be equipped by the ZGMF-MM07 Z'Gok and the AMGS-X18P Cavalier Aifrid.
Due to Athrun's clandestine mission, the appearance of the ∞ Justice Type II remains hidden from most people. To this end, the Z'Gok was created as an outer 'shell' that hides the ∞ Justice Type II within it, disguising it as a completely different mobile suit. Although the added bulk hampers its close-combat capabilities by covering up the ∞ Justice Type II's weapons, the Z'Gok compensates with its own heat claws, beam cannons, and missile launchers for melee combat. Additionally, it has access to the Volantes sub-flight lifter's weapons and abilities.
  • Remote Control-Attachment
A special attachment installed in conjunction with MBF-02 Strike Rouge, allowing it to remotely control the ∞ Justice Type II.
Like the other new Gundams, the ∞ Justice Type II is powered by a Hyper-Deuterion Engine, a hybrid of the nuclear reactor with the Deuterion Beam Energy Transfer System.
A device built into the mobile suit to counter the effects of ZAFT's Neutron Jammers. This gives the ∞ Justice Type II the ability to use its Hyper-Deuterion Engine without the risk of being shut down.
An improved version of Phase Shift Armor, the VPS Armor is capable of automatically changing its strength, color, and power consumption in the field, although this must be programmed beforehand.

History[]

For most of its operational service, the existence of ZGMF-X191M2 ∞ Justice Gundam Type II remained a secret due to the clandestine nature of Athrun Zala's activities, so it was hidden underneath the ZGMF-MM07 Z'Gok as its primary form.[1]

During the battle against the Kingdom of Foundation near the crash site of the space fortress Messiah, Athrun and the Z'Gok blocked an attack by Shura Serpentine's NOG-M1A1 Shi-ve.A against Kira Yamato and the ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II, sacrificing the Z'Gok shell in the process. This revealed the ∞ Justice Type II hidden inside the Z'Gok. Athrun then dueled the Shi-ve.A using the ∞ Justice Type II. Taking advantage of a remote-control trick executed by Cagalli Yula Athha, the ∞ Justice Type II destroyed the Shi-ve.A's right arm with a Type 35 Advanced Railgun. In a subsequent attack, the Shi-ve.A cut off the ∞ Justice Type II's right arm. However, the ∞ Justice Type II performed a surprise attack with the "Spitze Schwert" beam horn, cleaving through the Shi-ve.A and finally destroying it.[1]

The ∞ Justice Type II with the Cavalier Aifrid Unit-01 later participated in the assault on Requiem alongside the Zeus Silhouette-equipped ZGMF/A-42S2 Destiny Gundam Spec II and the METEOR-docked ZGMF-56E2/α Force Impulse Gundam Spec II. After Requiem's destruction and subsequent cessation of hostilities, it reunited with Cagalli's Strike Rouge on Earth.[1]

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The X-shaped wing of the Volantes sub-flight lifter resembles the T-65B X-Wing Starfighter featured in the Star Wars series, following the SEED series' recurring design and storytelling homages to Star Wars and Star Trek due to Chiaki Morisawa and Mitsuo Fukada being fans of western-originating Science Fiction.
  • The emergence of the ∞ Justice Type II from the wreckage of the Z'Gok evokes a similar situation from Gundam Build Fighters Try, where the Build Burning Gundam emerges from a Dom's wreckage.
    • According to director Mitsuo Fukuda, the ∞ Justice Type II's disguise was, at one time, meant to be based around the Acguy, but Gundam Build Fighters had already used the Acguy more extensively.
  • This is the only Justice variant piloted by Athrun to lose an arm onscreen.
  • This is the only Justice variant piloted by Athrun to not lose its backpack during its entire screen time.
    • The Justice sacrificed the Fatum-00 when Athrun used it to hinder Cagalli from following him, when he decided to self-destruct the mobile suit to destroy GENESIS.
    • The ∞ Justice sacrificed the Fatum-01 when Athrun sent it as a ramming battery to help destroy Requiem.
  • The ∞ Justice Type II is the only Justice variant that did not equip the METEOR support unit. Instead, in the movie, the METEOR 07 and 08 units that survived the Battle of Messiah was used by the ZGMF-1027M Duel Blitz Gundam and the ZGMF-103HD Lightning Buster Gundam to hold the defecting ZAFT forces back.
  • In a slightly unused scenario planned for the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom movie, Murrue Ramius had suggested a counter-tactic where Athrun would say on the intercom to Cagalli or Meyrin to remote control the mobile suit against the Black Knight Squad's mind reading tactics.[2]
  • The ∞ Justice Type II's head crest display the ∞ Justice's previous number "X19A DICIANNOVE", likely because the unit is an upgrade of the already existing ∞ Justice and not a new machine.
    • Diciannove is Italian for 19, as this was likely a reference for ∞ Justice model number.
  • The ∞ Justice Type II HGCE Gunpla kit includes its beam rifle instead of the Type 35 Prototype Advanced Railgun, despite the latter being used in the movie instead of the beam rifle which doesn't make an appearance.
  • The Metal Robot Spirits figure of the ∞ Justice Type II uses Terminal emblems and markings on its body, unlike the other Metal Robot Spirits figures released for the movie that feature the Compass emblem.
