Technology & Combat Characteristics

A variant of the ZGMF-1017 GINN designed mainly for reconnaissance missions, the GINN Long Range Reconnaissance Type has enhanced search capabilities thanks to the two radomes on its shoulders and an enhanced sensor array mounted in its head fin. Due to its role, the suit is also designed for extended solo operation and has a two seater cockpit for a pilot and a co-pilot, who is mainly involved with the search systems. Weapons wise, the suit only carries a sniper rifle.

History

During the First Alliance-PLANT War, ZAFT creates several variants of its mainstay unit, the ZGMF-1017 GINN, to cope with different situations. One such variant is the GINN Long Range Reconnaissance Type, which is used for search and recon missions in space. It is thus a sister unit of the ZGMF/TAR-X1 GINN Tactical Air Reconnaissance Type, which is used for similar missions, although inside Earth's atmosphere.

One such GINN unit was deployed by the Yun Law team in early February, CE 71, to search for the civilian shuttle Silverwind, which carried Lacus Clyne. The shuttle was preparing a memorial service at the remnants of the destroyed colony Junius Seven but was destroyed by an Earth Alliance battleship. However, at the same time as the GINN Long Range Reconnaissance Type was there, the crew of the Archangel was also present and were searching the ruins of Junius Seven for valuable equipment. The GINN Long Range Reconnaissance Type eventually spotted one of the MAW-01 Mistrals belonging to the Archangel and nearly destroyed it, but was eventually destroyed by Kira Yamato in the GAT-X105+AQM/E-X01 Aile Strike.

The GINN Long Range Reconnaissance Type was still in service in CE 73, with one such unit scanning the area around PLANT during an Earth Alliance attack. This GINN eventually discovered the secret strike force which planned to annihilate Aprilius One with a nuclear attack. During the Second Alliance-PLANT War, another of this suit followed Martin DaCosta of Terminal to the Support ship Eternal.
