Based on the operating data of the GuAIZ, changes were made to the GuAIZ R's thrusters and weaponry, but its basic body structure remained largely unchanged from its predecessor's. The GuAIZ R featured more powerful thrusters, with new ones mounted on the redesigned rear waist armor, and its backpack was also improved even though the movable side thrusters found on the GuAIZ's were omitted. In terms of weaponry, the GuAIZ R retained the GuAIZ's CIWS and beam rifle, but replaced the extensional arrestors with a pair of waist-mounted railguns, and the composite shield was changed to a new, easier-to-handle model. While all these changes were primarily meant to make the GuAIZ R easy to mass produce, they also significantly improved its overall performance, granting it higher firepower, mobility and maneuverability. |

− | The successor of the [[ZGMF-600 GuAIZ]], the GuAIZ R's armament consists of a pair of hip-mounted railguns, which replace the extensional arrestors, a new composite shield, two head-mounted CIWS and a beam rifle. The latter two weapons are the same as those used by GuAIZ. Besides the change in armament, the thrusters at the sides of the GuAIZ's backpack were also removed and replaced by additional thrusters on the new rear skirt. These changes made to the GuAIZ R greatly improved its combat performance while also managing to maintain the suit's ease of production. |

The ZGMF-601R GuAIZ R is a Mobile Suit introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.
Technology & Combat Characteristics
An upgraded version of the ZGMF-600 GuAIZ, the GuAIZ R ("Reinforced") was developed after the signing of the Junius Treaty and served as ZAFT's mainstay mobile suit until the introduction of the ZAKU series mobile suit.
Armaments
- MMI-GAU2 "Picus" 76mm CIWS
- Like the GuAIZ, the GuAIZ R features 2 "Picus" 76mm CIWS guns mounted in the head. These rapid-firing, light projectile weapons are used to intercept missiles and enemy units at close range.
- MMI-M20S "Porcus IX" Railgun
- Replacing the difficult to master extensional arrestors of the original GuAIZ are a pair of waist-mounted railguns. These railguns are improved version of the ones used by the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam, and serve to improve the GuAIZ R's mid-range firepower. When not in use, the railguns are folded so as to avoid hindering the mobile suit's maneuverability.
- MA-M21G Beam Rifle
- The standard handheld, ranged weapon of the GuAIZ R. While it has the same model number and appearance as the one used by the original GuAIZ, it features better accuracy and stability.
- MA-MV05 Composite Shield
- Mounted on the left forearm or handheld, the anti-beam coated composite shield allows the GuAIZ R to quickly switch between defense and close-quarter combat. Compared to the original GuAIZ's composite shield, the GuAIZ R's composite shield is easier to use and replaces the former's dual beam claws with a beam saber, providing a longer reach.
History
After the end of the First Alliance-PLANT War and the signing of the Junius Treaty, ZAFT was forced to change its strategy on strengthening its military, as the treaty stipulated the number of mobile weapons a nation could possess. Choosing to focus on developing new technologies through the New Millennium Series, ZAFT required a stopgap until the new mobile suits were ready for production. Using the ZGMF-600 GuAIZ as a basis, ZAFT created the ZGMF-601R GuAIZ R as its intermediate mainstay mobile suit. The GuAIZ R was in service for roughly one year before the process to phase it out for the more powerful and versatile ZAKU series mobile suit began. Despite this, the GuAIZ R remained a common sight during the Second Alliance-PLANT War.[1][2]
Two GuAIZ Rs were assigned to the ZAFT battleship Minerva. During the battle with the Phantom Pain ship Girty Lue, they were caught off guard by the three stolen ZAFT prototypes and were easily destroyed.[3] Later, several GuAIZ Rs fought and fared poorly against the GINN High Maneuver Type IIs piloted by ZAFT terrorists who were dropping a large fragment of the destroyed Junius Seven colony on Earth.[4] A number of GuAIZ Rs subsequently participated in battles such as the attack on Heaven's Base during Operation Ragnarök,[5] and defending Requiem Station One from an attack by the Three Ships Alliance.[6]
