The ZGMF-56E2/β Sword Impulse Gundam Spec II is a mobile suit introduced in the animated film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom. It is piloted by Lunamaria Hawke.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
The ZGMF-56E2/β Sword Impulse Gundam Spec II is a variant of the ZGMF-56E2 Impulse Gundam Spec II equipped with the Sword Silhouette.[1] Powered by the latest model of battery, the Sword Impulse Spec II has a different color scheme from the original ZGMF-X56S/β Sword Impulse Gundam.[2][3] This is caused by the difference in voltage applied when activating the Variable Phase Shift armor.[2] Otherwise, the Sword Impulse Spec II retains all of the capabilities of the Sword Impulse.[1]
Armaments[]
- MMI-710 "Excalibur" Anti-Ship Laser Sword
- Mounted on the Sword Silhouette, the pair of "Excalibur" anti-ship laser swords are the Sword Impulse Spec II's main weapons. The anti-ship laser swords are large physical swords with a laser blade along their cutting edge, and as their name implies, they can be used to destroy ships in space and naval ships on Earth, although they are mostly used against mobile suits during combat. The two swords can be joined at their hilts to form a large dual-bladed "Ambidextrous Form". The swords are also capable of extending the laser blade over the tip of the sword for piercing enemies with Phase Shift armor (PS Amror).
- RQM60 "Flash Edge" Beam Boomerang
- The Sword Silhouette also mounts two RQM60 "Flash-Edge" beam boomerangs, throwing weapons that emit a short beam blade on one end and can return to the owner after throwing, often catching enemy units by surprise.
- MMI-GAU25A 20mm CIWS
- Mounted in the chest, the pair of physical projectile-firing CIWS guns have excellent rapid-fire capabilities. They are primarily used to intercept incoming missiles or enemy units and to restrict the enemy's movements. They are also capable of penetrating ordinary mobile suit armor at extremely close range.
- M71-AAK "Folding Razor" Anti-Armor Knife
- One stored in each side skirt armor, its high-hardness blade flips out of the handle during use and can vibrate to enhance cutting capabilities. It can pierce through most armor, except PS Armor or its variants, and does not draw power from the suit.
- MMI-RG59V Mobile Shield
- A physical anti-beam coated shield used for defense, it can be mounted on the left forearm or handheld. This shield is expandable, but is normally used in its compact state by the Sword Impulse Spec II in order to utilize its other weapons with less hindrance.
- Type 35 Prototype Advanced Railgun
- A prototype handheld weapon that fires high velocity physical projectiles. This railgun is used by Compass mobile suits, including the Sword Impulse Spec II, as a countermeasure against the beam-resistant Femto Technology Armor found on the Black Knight Squad's mobile suits. It is stored on the rear waist armor when not in use.
- MA-BAR72 High-Energy Beam Rifle
- The same model of beam rifle as used by the original Sword Impulse. It has an excellent balance of offensive power and rapid-fire capabilities. It is stored on the suit's rear skirt armor when not in use. The Sword Impulse Spec II was not equipped with this weapon during the battle against Kingdom of Foundation.
Special Equipment & Features[]
- A wireless energy transfer system that allows the mobile suit to recharge its battery without returning to its mothership or base. The transfer system is very efficient, requiring only a few seconds before fully recharging the mobile suit. Unlike the Sword Impulse which was recharged using a Deuterion Beam emitted from its mothership, the LHM-BB01 Minerva, the Sword Impulse Spec II can recharge via a Deuterion Beam emitted from the ZGMF/A-42S2 Destiny Gundam Spec II.
- Like the original Sword Impulse, the Sword Impulse Spec II is protected by Variable Phase Shift Armor (VPS Armor). This armor is capable of automatically changing its strength, as well as color and power consumption in the field, although this must be programmed beforehand.
- Hardpoints for Silhouettes
- The Impulse Gundam Spec II retained the original ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam's ability to adapt to different situations by using exchangeable Silhouettes. In addition to adding weapons and equipment for different mission profiles, these packs also reconfigure the mobile suit's VPS Armor, causing the mobile suit's colors to change. The Sword Impulse Spec II is the Impulse Spec II equipped with the Sword Silhouette.
History[]
The ZGMF-56E2 Impulse Gundam Spec II was one of three mobile suits covertly upgraded by Erica Simmons at the request of Cagalli Yula Athha. These machines were then stored in a secret underground hangar located in Orb Union's Akatsuki Island. In C.E. 75, the Impulse Gundam Spec II, together with the ZGMF/A-42S2 Destiny Gundam Spec II and the ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II, were loaded onto the LHM-BB03S Millennium, a ship operated by world peace monitoring organization, Compass, to replaced their destroyed mobile suits so that the ship's crew could rescue their kidnapped president, Lacus Clyne, and fight against the opposing Kingdom of Foundation.[1]
After Lacus was saved, the Millennium and Compass' allies engaged in a massive space battle with Kingdom of Foundation. In this battle, Lunamaria Hawke sortied in the Impulse Spec II and immediately equipped the Blast Silhouette. Later, she switched to the Sword Silhouette to assist Shinn Asuka's ZGMF/A-42S2 Destiny Gundam Spec II against the Black Knight Squad's NOG-M4F Rud-ro.As. However, Lunamaria soon spotted turncoat Agnes Giebenrath's ZGMF-2027/A GYAN Strom and engaged her in a duel. During the battle, the Sword Impulse Gundam Spec II's "Excalibur" anti-ship laser swords were destroyed by the GYAN Strom's "Slayer Whip" heat rod, but Luna counterattacked with both "Flash Edge" beam boomerangs, destroying the GYAN Strom's heat rod and Falx G7 beam axe. However, with the Sword Silhouette's weapons all depleted and her mobile suit's battery running low, Lunamaria switched to the Force Silhouette and received a Deuterion Beam recharge from the Destiny Spec II to continue the fight against Agnes.[1]
