The ZGMF-56E2/β Sword Impulse Gundam Spec II is a Mobile Suit introduced in the animated film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom. It is piloted by Lunamaria Hawke.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
An upgraded version of the ZGMF-X56S/β Sword Impulse Gundam secretly modified by Erica Simmons at the request of Cagalli Yula Athha, the Sword Impulse Gundam Spec II features improved battery capacity. Its Variable Phase Shift Armor settings have been heavily modified to replace most of its white parts with red including on the v-fin, and the chest and shoulder's main colors changed to black. Otherwise, the Sword Impulse Spec II retains all of the capabilities of the original Sword Impulse Gundam.
Armaments[]
- MMI-710 "Excalibur" Anti-Ship Laser Sword
- Mounted on the Sword Silhouette pack, the pair of "Excalibur" anti-ship laser swords are the Sword Impulse Spec II's main combat weapon. The anti-ship laser swords are large physical swords with a laser blade along their cutting edge, and as their name implies, they can be used to destroy ships in space and naval ships on Earth, although they are mostly used against mobile suits during combat. The two swords can be joined at their hilts to form a large dual-bladed "Ambidextrous Form". The Sword Impulse Spec II prefers to use the Excaliburs in this form. The swords are also capable of extending the laser blade over the tip of the sword for piercing enemies with Phase-Shift Armor.
- RQM60 "Flash Edge" Beam Boomerang
- The Sword Silhouette also mounts two RQM60 "Flash-Edge" beam boomerangs, throwing weapons that emit a short beam blade on one end and can return to the owner after throwing, often catching enemy units by surprise. These beam boomerangs are an improved version of ZGMF-X09A Justice's beam boomerangs.
- MMI-GAU25A 20mm CIWS
- Mounted in the Impulse Spec II's chest, the pair of physical projectile-firing CIWS guns have excellent rapid-fire capabilities. They are primarily used to intercept incoming missiles or enemy units and to restrict the enemy's movements. They are also capable of penetrating ordinary mobile suit armor at extremely close range.
- M71-AAK "Folding Razor" Anti-Armor Knife
- One stored in each of the suit's side armor, these knives are developed based on the data of the GAT-X105 Strike's combat knives. Its high-hardness blade flips out of the handle during use and can vibrate to enhance cutting capabilities. It can pierce through most armor, except PS armor or its variants, and does not draw power from the suit.
- MMI-RG59V Mobile Shield
- The Impulse Spec II can use a physical anti-beam coated MMI-RG59V mobile shield for defense, mounted on the left forearm or handheld. This shield is expandable but is normally used in its compact state by the Sword Impulse Spec II, allowing it to utilize its other weapons with less hindrance.
- MA-BAR72 High-Energy Beam Rifle
- Stored on the suit's rear skirt armor, this beam rifle is an enhanced version of the ZGMF-X10A Freedom and the ZGMF-X09A Justice's and developed using the ZGMF-X23S Saviour's beam rifle as the base model. It is designed with the Deuterion Beam Energy Transfer System in mind and has an excellent balance of offensive power and rapid-fire capabilities. Rarely used by the Sword Impulse Spec II.
- Type 35 Prototype Advanced Railgun
- A prototype high-powered handheld railgun, designed to combat the Femto Technology Armor found on the Black Knight Squad's mobile suits. Multiple examples of this weapon were provided to Compass mobile suits fighting against the Kingdom of Foundation, including the Impulse Gundam Spec II.
Special Equipment & Features[]
- An improved version of Phase Shift Armor, Variable Phase Shift Armor is capable of automatically changing its strength, as well as color and power consumption in the field, although this must be programmed beforehand.
- The Deuterion Beam Energy Transfer System is a wireless energy transfer system built into the Second Stage Series and their support ship, the LHM-BB01 Minerva. The system allows a mobile suit that is properly lined up with the Minerva to receive a recharge while in the field, meaning that if the mobile suit runs low on power during a battle, it can be quickly recharged without coming inside the ship's hangar. The transfer system is very efficient, requiring only a few seconds before fully recharging the mobile suit. Still on a battlefield, even a few seconds could mean death, so it is advisable for the mobile suit to only perform the maneuver when they have covering fire. Like its predecessor, the Impulse Spec II is also provided with this feature, that it can recharge via the Deuterion beam emitter coming from the ZGMF/A-42S2 Destiny Spec II.
- Hardpoints for Silhouette Packs
- While the other suits of the Second Stage series are capable of transforming into a mobile armor mode, the Impulse Spec II instead is similar to the Strike in the fact, that it can adapt to different situations by using exchangeable Silhouette packs. In addition to adding weapons and equipment for different mission profiles, these packs also reconfigure the Impulse Spec II's Variable Phase Shift Armor.
History[]
The Impulse Gundam Spec II was one of three mobile suits upgraded by Erica Simmons within a secret Orb Union asteroid base to bolster Compass' forces in case of an emergency. This would later become prudent when the crew of the LHM-BB03S Millennium needed to acquire new mobile suits to replace their losses following the Eldore incident in order to enact a plan to rescue Lacus Clyne from captivity by the Kingdom of Foundation, which was hiding away in the space fortress Artemis.
Lunamaria Hawke would sortie in the Impulse Spec II to defend the LHM-BB03S Millennium as it cleared a path to the Requiem superweapon. After expending the weapons on the Blast Impulse Spec II, Lunamaria would switch to the Sword Silhouette to continue the battle. The Sword Impulse Spec II would immediately encounter Agnes Giebenrath's ZGMF-2027/A GYAN Strom which had defected to the Foundation, and engage in a duel against it, leading to the Sword Impulse Spec II lose all of it's close combat weapons after Lunamaria threw them at the GYAN. When the Sword Impulse ran out of power, it changed to the Force Silhouette and got the Force Impulse recharged thanks to the Destiny's Deuterion Beam Energy Transfer System and the fight between the Impulse and the GYAN Strom carried on from there.
