The ZGMF-56E2/α Force Impulse Gundam Spec II is a Mobile Suit introduced in the animated film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom. It is piloted by Lunamaria Hawke.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
The ZGMF-56E2/α Force Impulse Gundam Spec II is a variant of the ZGMF-56E2 Impulse Gundam Spec II equipped with the Force Silhouette pack.[1][2] Powered by the latest model of battery, the Force Impulse Spec II featured a darker and subdued color scheme compared to the original ZGMF-X56S/α Force Impulse Gundam.[3][2] This is caused by the difference in voltage applied when activating the Variable Phase Shift Armor.[3][2] Otherwise, the Force Impulse Spec II retains all of the capabilities of the original Force Impulse.[1]
Armaments[]
- MA-M941 "Vajra" Beam Saber
- Stored on the Force Silhouette pack, the pair of beam sabers serve as the Force Impulse Spec II's main close combat weapon.
- M71-AAK "Folding Razor" Anti-armor Knife
- One stored in each of the suit's side armor, its high hardness blade flips out of the handle during use and can vibrate to enhance cutting capabilities. It can pierce through most armor, except Phase Shift Armor or its variants, and does not draw power from the suit.
- MMI-GAU25A 20mm CIWS
- Mounted in the chest, the pair of physical projectile-firing CIWS guns have excellent rapid-fire capabilities. They are primarily used to intercept incoming missiles or enemy units, and to restrict enemy's movements. They are also capable of penetrating ordinary mobile suit armor in extreme close range.
- MMI-RG59V Mobile Shield
- A physical anti-beam coated shield used for defense, it can be mounted on the left forearm or handheld. This shield is collapsible, but is normally used in its expanded state by the Force Impulse Spec II.
- Type 35 Prototype Advanced Railgun
- A prototype handheld weapon that fires high velocity physical projectiles. This railgun is used by Compass mobile suits, including the Force Impulse Spec II, as a countermeasure against the beam-resistant Femto Technology Armor found on the Black Knight Squad's mobile suits. It is stored on the rear waist armor when not in use.
- MA-BAR72 High-Energy Beam Rifle
- The same model of beam rifle as used by the original Force Impulse. It has an excellent balance of offensive power and rapid-fire capabilities. It is stored on the suit's rear skirt armor when not in use. The Force Impulse Spec II was not equipped with this weapon during the battle against Kingdom of Foundation.
Special Equipment & Features[]
- Like the original Force Impulse, the Force Impulse Spec II is protected by Variable Phase Shift Armor (VPS Armor). This armor is capable of automatically changing its strength, as well as color and power consumption in the field, although this must be programmed beforehand.
- A wireless energy transfer system that allows the mobile suit to recharge its battery without returning to its mothership or base. The transfer system is very efficient, requiring only a few seconds before fully recharging the mobile suit. Unlike the Force Impulse which was recharged using a Deuterion Beam emitted from its mothership, the LHM-BB01 Minerva, the Force Impulse Spec II recharges via a Deuterion Beam emitted from the ZGMF/A-42S2 Destiny Gundam Spec II.
- Hardpoints for Silhouette Packs
- The Impulse Spec II retained the original Impulse's ability to adapt to different situations by using exchangeable Silhouette packs. In addition to adding weapons and equipment for different mission profiles, these packs also reconfigure the mobile suit's VPS Armor, causing the mobile suit's colors to change. The Force Impulse Spec II is the Impulse Spec II equipped with the Force Silhouette.
- A large mobile weapon platform with powerful thrusters and an even more powerful armament of battleship-caliber beam cannons, large beam swords, and dozens of heavy missile launchers. It is equipped by Force Impulse Spec II to destroy the Requiem.
History[]
The ZGMF-56E2 Impulse Gundam Spec II was one of three mobile suits covertly upgraded by Erica Simmons at the request of Cagalli Yula Athha. These machines were then stored in a secret underground hangar located in Orb Union's Akatsuki Island. In C.E. 75, the Impulse Spec II, together with the ZGMF/A-42S2 Destiny Gundam Spec II and the ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II, were loaded onto the LHM-BB03S Millennium, a ship operated by world peace monitoring organization, Compass, to replace their destroyed mobile suits so that the ship's crew could rescue their kidnapped president, Lacus Clyne, and fight against the opposing Kingdom of Foundation.[1]
After Lacus was saved, the Millennium and Compass allies engaged in a massive space battle with Kingdom of Foundation. In this battle, Lunamaria Hawke sortied in the Impulse Spec II, and after losing most of the Sword Silhouette's weapons to turncoat Agnes Giebenrath's ZGMF-2027/A GYAN Strom, Lunamaria switched to the Force Silhouette and received a Deuterion Beam recharge from Shinn Asuka's Destiny Spec II. Using the Force Impulse Spec II, Lunamaria resumed battling against Agnes. Eventually, she defeated Agnes by using the Force Impulse Spec II's beam saber to slice apart the GYAN Strom's left arm and left wing, before firing the CIWS to damage the latter's thrusters, sending it crashing to the lunar surface.
Afterwards, Lunamaria's Force Impulse Spec II joined Shinn's Destiny Spec II and Athrun's ZGMF-X191M2 ∞ Justice Gundam Type II to destroy the rebuilt Requiem superweapon. Receiving the METEOR 08 from Dearka Elsman's ZGMF-103HD Lightning Buster Gundam, Lunamaria's Force Impulse Spec II launched a barrage of beam shots and missiles from the large mobile weapon platform to take out the mobile suits and ships guarding the Requiem. Lunamaria's Force Impulse Spec II then used the METEOR's beam swords to damage the superweapon's muzzle, with the final blow dealt by the Destiny Spec II. Following the destruction of the Requiem and defeat of Foundation, Lunamaria used the Force Impulse Spec II to rescue Agnes, who was stranded on the Moon.[1]

Notes & Trivia[]
- It is not explained how the battery-powered Force Impulse Gundam Spec II can be equipped with the METEOR, which was previously utilized by nuclear-powered mobile suits or modified with its own nuclear reactor.
