The YMS-15 Gyan is a mobile suit introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
The YMS-15 Gyan was developed by Zimmad in the late stages of the One Year War for the Principality of Zeon's second phase mainstay mobile suit development project.[1] It was designed with exceptional close combat ability in anticipation of melee combat against the Earth Federation Forces' mobile suits. However, its focus on close combat resulted in lower versatility. Ultimately, Zeonic's MS-14 Gelgoog was selected as the second phase mainstay mobile suit due to its superior general performance and versatility, though the Gyan's basic performance was said to be superior to the Gelgoog.[1]
Though the Gyan's reactor output was not sufficient for a beam rifle, it was more than enough to power its primary weapon, a custom beam saber. Its only other weapon was the missile shield, an equipment that combined offensive and defensive capabilities.[1] Thanks to its use of the fluid pulse accelerator, as well as its arms and hands being tuned specifically for close combat, the Gyan's responsiveness and range of motion were extremely high among One Year War-era mobile suits.[2]
A Gyan (depending on sources, this was either the sole unit produced[3] or one of three produced units[4]) was customized for use by Colonel M'Quve of the Mobile Assault Force.[1] The appearance of the Gyan, with its silver armor and Pickelhaube helmet design, had a strong resemblance to a medieval armored knight. This was further emphasized by M'Quve's fighting style, which was heavily based on fencing.
Armaments[]
- Beam Saber
- Though the Principality military lagged behind the Federation in terms of beam weapon development, it developed numerous excellent beam weapons late in the war. The Gyan's beam saber had higher output than the standard Federation beam saber, and was specialized for piercing attacks rather than slashing.[1][2]
- Missile Shield
- The Gyan is equipped with a large circular shield that not only defend it from beam weapons, but also has offensive capabilities in the form of needle missiles and hide bombs stored within. However, the storing of weapons does lower the shield's defensive capabilities, making it weaker than other standard mobile suit-use shields.[2]
- Needle Missile
- A type of micro missile stored in the outer rims of the missile shield, which held a total of 60. They were effective for distraction and intimidation, and could disable an enemy mobile suit with direct hits to the joints.[1]
- Hide Bomb
- A type of floating mine stored in the middle of the missile shield, which held a total of 25.[1]
Special Equipment & Features[]
- Fluid Pulse Accelerator
- A cylindrical unit located in the pelvis, the fluid pulse accelerator stored excess pressure generated by the reactor, transmitting it to each actuator when needed. This not only prevented backlash to the reactor caused by overloads, but also greatly improved the responsiveness and torque of the Gyan's feet, allowing it to repeatedly move forward and backward, similar to fencing footwork. In the event of damage or malfunction, it could be quickly ejected to prevent damage to the mobile suit's basic frame.[1]
History[]
One of four potential designs for a successor to the MS-06F Zaku II, the Gyan proved insufficient and Zeon forces later sided with Zeonic's more powerful, beam rifle equipped MS-14 Gelgoog.[5][6]
After the fall of Solomon, M'Quve boarded the Gyan and plotted to destroy the Earth Federation's advanced RX-78-2 Gundam. The plan was to lure the Gundam into the shoal zone of former Side 5, specifically to the abandoned Texas colony, where M'Quve used the hide bombs and space mines to lay a series of traps. However, these traps proved inadequate and M'Quve was forced to fight the Gundam directly using the Gyan. This would be the only time the Gyan saw combat as it was destroyed in the battle, with M'Quve also killed.
Alternate History[]
In the Mobile Suit Gundam compilation movie, which was released after the anime, the YMS-15 Gyan is edited out. In the manga "Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Deleted Affair: Portrait Of Young Comet", M'Quve and the Gyan are seen (indicating its events are based on the movie and not the anime) during the Battle of A Baoa Qu. Knowing of Kycilia Zabi's death, though not knowing the details, M'Quve saw the fortress as lost. He set into motion an evacuation plan for the wife of Dozle Zabi, Zenna Zabi and her daughter Mineva Lao Zabi. While a Gelgoog piloted by Char and a Gwazine-class acted as a distraction, M'Quve used the Gyan to escort a booster-equipped Komusai shuttle that held the Zabi family members. However, the Gyan was caught in a last-minute attack from a Magellan and subsequently destroyed.
Variants[]
- Introduced in the anime Gundam Build Fighters Try, it is a customized Gyan Gunpla built and operated by Tateo Sazaki. Also known as "Gyan [Tateo Custom]", it has a metallic silver and dark gray color scheme with some red on its torso. It retained the standard armament of the Gyan.

Notes & Trivia[]
- At one point, the Gyan was going to be named "Hakuji".[7]
- The Gyan is one of the first mobile suits, if not the first, to incorporate weapon function into a shield, a trait that would become more common in later mobile suits.
- In some Gundam strategy games, most notably the Gihren's Greed series, it is possible for Zeon players to mass produce the Gyan instead of the Gelgoog. Doing so grants access to a wide range of Gyan variants, roughly corresponding to the Gelgoog's variants.
