The YMS-09 Prototype Dom (YMS-09 プロトタイプドム Purototaipu Domu?) is a mobile suit featured in the design series Mobile Suit Variation. It was piloted by Col. Frederick Cranberry.[1]

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

With the deployment of the MS-07 Gouf series, the Zeon military's operational capabilities on Earth showed signs of slight improvement. However, its biggest challenge, namely improving mobile suit's mobility, was not fundamentally resolved, and the Zeon military and engineers continued to struggle. Eventually, the breakthrough came from Zimmad, a company with experience in designing the MS-07C-5 Gouf Test Prototype.[2] They further developed the technology and theory of leg thrusters they had cultivated with the C-5 Gouf, and brilliantly perfected a method of movement that combined the use of hovering and thruster rockets.[2]

The YMS-09 Prototype Dom was, as its name suggested, a prototype mobile suit for the MS-09 Dom. However, it was based on the Gouf Test Prototype, which could also be called the Zimmad's version of Gouf.[3] In addition, there was the YMS-08A High Mobility Test Type, which was considered a study for a high mobility land combat MS by Zimmad. In other words, the Prototype Dom could be said to be Zimmad's answer to the "high mobility required for a land combat mobile suit" that became apparent during the development of the YMS-08A.[3] However, neither the YMS-08A nor the MS-07C-5 incorporated the idea of hover propulsion using a thermonuclear jet engine, and the Prototype Dom was the first time that the project came to fruition.[3] Thus, although the YMS-09 was called a prototype, there were many processes that preceded it. This was because it took Zimmad a lot of time to "understand" a ground combat mobile suit in their own way. The Prototype Dom could be said to be a mobile suit in the process of completion that showed the struggles of the Zimmad's development team and the solution to the mobility problems, i.e., the hover propulsion.[3]

The Prototype Dom featured Zaku-style facial power pipes which was hidden in subsequently-produced MS-09 Dom. In addition, its back was equipped with a backpack to facilitate various tests and replacements,[3] with latches could be equipped for containing the giant bazooka and heat saber.[3]

Armaments[]

  • Heat Saber
The Prototype Dom's main close combat weapon, it used thermal energy to superheat its blade to melt through the armor of an enemy machine. It had an electrical discharge function and could store high charges via the application of Minovsky particle physics. As the heat saber degraded during use, it was discarded after usage. The heat saber was mounted horizontally on Prototype Dom's backpack when not in use.
  • 360mm Giant Bazooka
A projectile-based weapon which fired rocket-propelled 360mm physical rounds. Liquid fuel supplied through a pipe from the Prototype Dom's hand was injected as a primary propellant, and then the projectile's speed was increased by rocket motor ignition. The giant bazooka was fed by a 10 rounds magazine, and a single round could blow off the torso of an enemy mobile suit.
  • H&L-SB25K/280mmA-P Zaku Bazooka
A portable, projectile-based firearm used by MS-06 Zaku II series, the Zaku bazooka was primarily used for anti-ship combat and displayed its power in hit-and-run attacks. It could also be used against enemy mobile suits, but it was harder to hit a constantly moving target.

History[]

After clearing the problems related to the basic technology on hover propulsion, Zimmad's development team completed the planning stage of Prototype Dom with astonishing speed and moved on to the production of the actual MS.[2] Two Prototype Doms were completed in Side 3 and were immediately transported to Earth for various tests at the California Base,[4] and it was formally adopted by Zeon military within a few weeks.[2] After the MS-09 Dom began mass production, the Prototype Dom Unit 2 would be utilized for the development of YMS-09D Dom Tropical Test Type for tropical and desert warfares.[5][6]

During the events in Mobile Suit Gundam Zeonic Front: Indignation of Zeon animation, a lone Prototype Dom unit (likely Unit 1) was seen guarding Zeon's Odessa base in Eastern Europe.[7]
