The XXXG-0SR Gundam Sandrock (aka Sandrock , Gundam Zero-Four or Sandrock Ver.Ka.) is a mobile suit from the manga Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Endless Waltz: Glory of the Losers and is piloted by Quatre Raberba Winner.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

The Sandrock was constructed by Instructor H in the L4 colonies under the financial support of the Winner family. Designed for operations on land, especially in a desert environment, it has high combat capabilities and excels in melee combat with its strong armor that is more robust than other Gundams'. In addition, it has advanced communication and information analysis systems as it was designed as a commander unit and tasked to be the core of the command system for the Maganac Corps and the five Gundams. Following its self-destruction and then restoration by the Maganac Corps, the Sandrock was painted in a new bluish-purple color scheme.

Armaments[]

  • Vulcan Gun
A pair of shell-firing armament built into the head. Low offensive power, only used to restrict enemy movement, and lay down a wall of suppressive fire due to their rapid fire capability.
  • Heat Shotel
These enormous curved blades are the Gundam Sandrock's main weapons, and with them it can cut an enemy in half with each hand simultaneously. They can be super-heated to further increase their cutting power. The Heat Shotels can also be used as throwing weapons when required, or connected at their pommels to form a double-bladed weapon, or mounted to the Shield to form the Cross Crusher. When not in use, the Heat Shotels are mounted on the backpack of the Sandrock.
  • Shield
A physical shield designed with a snakehead motif, it features two claws as "fangs", and two shield flashers as "eyes". The shield has an anti beam coating, and the shield flashers can release a blinding flash to confuse enemies. The Gundam Sandrock is usually equipped with a shield mounted on its left forearm, but it can mount a second shield on its right forearm if required.
  • Cross Crusher
This arm-mounted crushing weapon is formed by combining the Gundam Sandrock's Shield and both Heat Shotels. It can capture an enemy mobile suit in between the Shotels, and then cuts them in half.
  • Beam Machine Gun
A handheld compact, rapid-fire beam weapon. While its shots are weaker than those of standard beam rifles, its rate-of-fire is much greater. It has a folding stock for added stability and its grip also folds for ease of storage. The Beam Machine Gun is stored on the rear waist armor when not in use, or it can be stored on the side of the Shield while wearing the Armadillo Equipment.
  • Beam Rifle
A high output, long-range beam firearm powered by energy cartridges similar to the XXXG-01W Wing Gundam's buster rifle. A single shot is strong enough to destroy multiple OZ-02MD Virgos.[1]
  • Shoulder Cannon
A pair of cannons can be mounted in the optional armor attached over both shoulders.

Special Equipment & Features[]

  • Self-Destruct System
The Gundam Sandrock was built to self-destruct should the pilot choose to. A remote detonator is placed within the cockpit and if a dire situation arrives, the pilot can destroy the Mobile Suit. The system was designed to overload its power systems and has enough explosive power to destroy several city blocks. It's a last option tactic if the pilot is incapable of protecting the Mobile Suit, while not allowing it to fall into enemy hands. It also can be used as one large explosive device to eradicate large targets. Unlike the other Gundams', Sandrock's system opens the cockpit door after activation and once the pilot has escaped, the Sandrock is programmed to move forward a certain distance to ensure the pilot is not caught in the explosion.
  • Anti-Beam Coating Cloak
A heavy cloth cloak treated with an anti-beam coating to protect the mobile suit from beam shots. It is held in place by additional shoulder armor and could completely cover the mobile suit with its size, with the exception of the head, providing full body protection. In addition, it also protects against the heat during atmospheric entry.
  • Armadillo Unit/Armadillo Lizard Unit
The Armadillo Unit is a set of detachable armor for the Gundam Sandrock that boosts its defense and thrust. The shoulder sections of this armor is equipped with a pair of shoulder shields, which are modified version of WMS-03 Maganac's shields and equipped with auxiliary boosters for booster-assisted jumping. Furthermore, additional boosters are also attached to the Sandrock's backpack. There is another version of the Armadillo Unit, the Armadillo Lizard Unit, where the two front armor pieces are redesigned and the two shoulder shields are replaced with a pair of Sandrock's shields. Additionally, a missile pod with 48 missiles is attached on top of each shield. Other parts of the armor, such as the additional backpack boosters, remain unchanged.
  • High-Speed Assault Equipment
A set of detachable armor that covered the Gundam Sandrock's lower body and is equipped with built-in hover units. Furthermore, there are hardpoints on the sides for mounting additional weapons, such as the Maganac's large rifle, and they can be fired while mounted. The same set of armor can be also be equipped by the Maganac.

History[]

When the five scientists who designed the XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Proto Zero went their separate ways, each of them took copies of the plans for their original Gundam design. Instructor H, who went into hiding in the L4 colonies, designed the built the XXXG-01SR Gundam Sandrock based on their original plan. The Gundam Sandrock was specifically for Quatre Raberba Winner, who had no intention of aiding in Operation Meteor's colony drop operation. Against his pacifist father's wishes, Quatre took Sandrock to Earth to meet up with the Maganac Corps in their fight against OZ and the oppressive United Earth Sphere Alliance. Quatre and XXXG-01H Gundam Heavyarms pilot Trowa Barton later meet at Corsica Base and joined forces. As OZ became more aggressive in space, the five Gundam pilots realized they would have to return to defend the colonies.

Quatre then joined up with the other Gundam pilots and attacked a military spaceport in Singapore so as to return to space. In order to create a diversion to facilitate the escape of his fellow Gundam pilots into space, Quatre chose to sacrifice Sandrock along with himself. This was not a decision he took lightly, as Quatre had come to see Sandrock as a friend. However, Sandrock's cockpit opened of its own accord. After Quatre exited the Gundam, it walked off by itself into the enemy forces before self-destructing, decimating the enemy's numbers and allowing Duo Maxwell and Chang Wufei to escape into space with their Gundams.

OZ recovered the Sandrock's remains, but made little effort to repair the machine. Eventually, Sally Po conducted a solo mission to destroy what was left of the Gundam, sneaking into the hanger of a military base where the remains were being stored and covering them with explosive charges. As fate would have it, Sally discovered the Sandrock at the same time as the Maganac Corps had, briefly engaging them before detonating the charges. Surprisingly, even in its damaged state, the Sandrock survived the explosions. After escaping from OZ forces, Sally conceded the Sandrock's remains to the Maganac Corps, in hopes they would be able to re-unite the damaged Gundam with its pilot someday.

Quatre eventually return to Earth, traveling to the Sanc Kingdom with Heero Yuy, where he later learnt the Maganac Corps had found and restored the Sandrock. The young pilot journeys alone through the desert, traveling on foot after his plane was shot down by an OZ-07AMS Aries, in hopes of retrieving his Gundam. But he discovered the Maganac Corps' headquarters was already under attack by OZ. Quatre managed to retrieve the rebuilt Sandrock, which now had a bluish-purple color scheme, and led the Maganac Corps to victory. Quatre and the Maganac Corps returned to the Sanc Kingdom, where they struggle to defend it from the unrelenting attacks of Romefeller Foundation's mobile dolls, until the kingdom was dissolved by decree of its queen.

Later, former Sanc Kingdom soldier Lucretia Noin asked Quatre to accompany her to space and he took the Sandrock along as well. While the mobile suit had been restored, the Sandrock was designed for ground warfare, and thus unsuitable for combat in outer space. Despite this, Quatre took the Sandrock into a number of battles where, despite its decreased effectiveness, managed to hold out until they made contact with the spaceship Peacemillion, where the former Gundam engineer Mike Howard and his team refitted the Sandrock for outer space combat, resulting in the XXXG-01SR2 Gundam Sandrock Custom.

In Other Media[]

The Gundam Sandrock has a brief cameo in Gundam EXA during the After Colony chapter, it was destroyed by Ex's Extreme Gundam in his attempt to cause a great disturbance that would destroy the AC world.
