Disambiguation:

The XXXG-01SR2 Gundam Sandrock Custom (aka Sandrock Kai or Gundam Zero-Four) is the upgraded version of XXXG-01SR Gundam Sandrock in New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz and in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Endless Waltz: Glory of the Losers. It is piloted by Quatre Raberba Winner.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

An upgrade of the Gundam Sandrock with added verniers to increase its mobility and capability for combat in space. In the Glory of the Losers manga, thrusters were also added to the central part of the backpack, improving its thrust.

Armaments[]

  • Vulcan Gun
A pair of shell-firing armament built into the head. Low offensive power, only used to restrict enemy movement, and lay down a wall of suppressive fire due to their rapid fire capability.
  • Heat Shotel
These enormous curved blades remain the Sandrock Custom's main weapons, and with them it can cut an enemy in half with each hand simultaneously. They can be super-heated to further increase their cutting power. The Heat Shotels can also be used as throwing weapons when required, or connected at their pommels to form a double-bladed weapon, or mounted to the Shield to form the Cross Crusher. When not in use, the Heat Shotels are mounted on the backpack of the Sandrock.
  • Shield
Designed with a snakehead motif, it features two claws as "fangs", and two shield flashers as "eyes". The shield has an anti beam coating, and the shield flashers can release a blinding flash to confuse enemies.
  • Beam Machine Gun
A handheld compact, rapid-fire beam weapon. While its shots are weaker than those of standard beam rifles, its rate-of-fire is much greater. It has a folding stock for added stability and its grip also folds for ease of storage. The Beam Machine Gun can be stored on the rear waist armor when not in use, or it can be stored on the side of the Shield.
  • Beam Rifle
A high output, long-range beam firearm powered by energy cartridges similar to the Wing Gundam's Buster Rifle. The beam rifle is dropped by Quatre after blowing a hole in the Libra's hull in order to escape during the conclusion of the Eve Wars.
  • Laser Gun
A small gun that fires a highly concentrated directional laser, it is capable of penetrating the electromagnetic barrier generated by the Virgo's Planet Defensors. It is stored on the rear waist armor when not in use.[1]

Special Equipment & Features[]

  • Anti-Beam Coating Cloak
A cloth cloak treated with an anti-beam coating to protect the mobile suit from beam shots. It could completely cover the mobile suit with its size, with the exception of the head, providing full body protection. In addition, it also protects against the heat during atmospheric entry.
A copy of Wing Gundam Zero's cockpit interface system was installed on the Gundam Sandrock Custom temporarily. Heero ordered it so that Quatre can lead the other Gundams while he would duel with Zechs. To activate the system, Quatre has to key in the code 'ZERO'. After using the system successfully, Quatre removed it upon returning to Peacemillion as he felt he can fight without it.
  • Self-Destruct System
The Gundam Sandrock Custom was built to self-destruct should the pilot choose to. A remote detonator is placed within the cockpit and if a dire situation arrives, the pilot can destroy the Mobile Suit. The system was designed to overload its power systems and has enough explosive power to destroy several city blocks. It's a last option tactic if the pilot is incapable of protecting the Mobile Suit, while not allowing it to fall into enemy hands. It also can be used as one large explosive device to eradicate large targets.

History[]

As the military and political strife plaguing the Earth Sphere in AC 195 would reach a decisive conclusion in space, Quatre Raberba Winner returned to space with his XXXG-01SR Gundam Sandrock to join the battle. Aboard the independent battleship Peacemillion, Gundam supporter Mike Howard and his team upgraded the Sandrock for space combat, creating the Gundam Sandrock Custom. Quatre then used the Sandrock Custom during the battles of the Eve Wars.

After the war, Quatre tried to locate the Vulkanus, an abandoned asteroid base that housed a Mobile Doll factory, but was captured by Perfect Peace People operatives who were also searching for the asteroid base. After being subjected to torture and brainwashing to turn him to their cause, Quatre was sent to retrieve his Gundam to assist the Perfect Peace People. Quatre travelled to the Moon, where the Gundam pilots and Mike Howard had setup a base. With a OZ-04MD Virgo III attack launched by the Perfect Peace People acting as a cover, Quatre took off in the Sandrock Custom and then attacked Duo Maxwell's and Trowa Barton's Gundams. Duo and Trowa managed to subdued the Sandrock Custom and extracted Quatre from its cockpit, but the images of the Gundams in action were spun into anti-Gundam propaganda by Victor Gaintz, leader of the Perfect Peace People. The Vulkanus was eventually found, and a recovered Quatre fought in the ensuing battle with his Sandrock Custom. Working together with the other Gundam pilots, they defeated the Perfect Peace People, but the incident left Quatre with doubts about keeping the Gundams in a supposed era of peace.

Quatre convinced three of his fellow Gundam pilots to send their Gundams into the sun on the Vulkanus, with Wufei being the only one to refuse. However, in December of AC 196, the Barton Foundation launched a coup against the pacifist Earth Sphere Unified Nation, abducting its figurehead, Representative Relena Darlian, and dropping an army of MMS-01 Serpents onto the ESUN capitol in Brussels, Belgium. To combat this threat, Quatre went on a mission to intercept the Vulkanus and return it to Earth, which he succeeds in. After dispatching Wing Zero to Heero separately, Quatre rendezvous with Trowa and Duo in Earth's orbit and the three descend to Brussels in their Gundams to assist Zechs Merquise and Lucrezia Noin in Brussels.

After Mariemaia's Rebellion was ended, Sandrock Custom was safely self-detonated on Earth, alongside Duo's Deathscythe Hell and Trowa's Heavyarms Custom.

Notes & Trivia[]

Sandrock Custom EW (HGFA manual Shield)

1/144 HGFA Gundam Sandrock Custom with shield

  • A shield is included in the 1998 1/144 HGFA model kit, which was released after the 1/100 kit, that did not appear in the movie. This shield is different from the original TV version's (and the later Katoki redesign's) and does not resemble a snake's head. Instead, the shield had an emblem that resembles a winged, hooded cobra. The Heat Shotels could be attached to this shield to perform the Cross Crusher.
