The XXXG-01S2 Altron Gundam (aka Altron, Nataku, or Gundam Zero-Five) is the upgraded version of XXXG-01S Shenlong Gundam introduced in New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz and is piloted by Chang Wufei.

Technology & Combat Characteristics

Altron Gundam was built from the damaged XXXG-01S Shenlong Gundam, with the five Gundam scientists quietly using the OZ manufacturing facilities on the Moon to upgrade the mobile suit with new equipment and weaponry. Altron was still a close combat unit, but was given more mid-range weaponry.

While Shenlong had only one "Dragon Fang," Altron was equipped with two of them (hence the name, taken from the Chinese "ertou long" or "two-headed dragon") and their reach has been dramatically increased. The original Beam Trident was replaced with a double-ended Twin Beam Trident, and a Twin Beam Cannon mounted on a flexible tail was added to its backpack, giving it additional ranged firepower.

Altron was also reconfigured with greater mobility, and adapted for space combat with more thrusters and a new pair of wing-shaped binders. These binders, together with the Twin Beam Cannon, are known collectively as the "Futier" equipment. Overall, Altron has twice the fire power and combat capabilities of its predecessor. Added with Chang Wufei's martial arts combat skills when piloting, Altron is one of the most formidable mobile suit in melee combat.

Armaments

• Vulcan Gun

A pair of shell-firing armament built into the head. Low offensive power, only used to restrict enemy movement, and lay down a wall of suppressive fire due to their rapid fire capability.

• Dragon Fang

Equipped on each of the Altron's forearm, it is a large, claw-like weapon shaped in the form of a dragon's head. Unlike Shenlong's singular Dragon Fang, the Altron's pair of Dragon Fangs are not equipped with flamethrowers, but they have far greater range, and can be used as a shield to protect against most firearms. Each of the Altron's Dragon Fangs is connected to a chain of extendable, flexible blocks which is in turn attached to a hinged unit on the forearm. During use, the hinged unit flips forward and the blocks extend, enabling the Dragon Fang to strike the target. Additionally, the blocks' flexibility allowed the Dragon Fangs to change their attack direction after launched. When launched, four small wings at the rear of the Dragon Fang help steer the direction of the attack. Due to the unique way the Dragon Fangs are attached to the Altron, their destruction would not affect the Gundam's use of its forearms.

• Twin Beam Trident

The Altron wields a Twin Beam Trident for close combat. It is an direct upgrade from the Shenlong's Beam Trident, with a beam emitter on both ends, and has more strength and versatility as a weapon. It can be stored on the backpack when not in use, or attached to a mount on the left wing binder of the "Futier" equipment.

• Twin Beam Cannon

A pair of beam cannons located on a flexible tail on the Altron's back. The weapon has a roughly 180 degree firing range and, as it is mounted on a turret, can rotate to attack enemies at the sides. The "Futier" equipment, which included the Twin Beam Cannon and the wing-shaped binders, is destroyed during Wufei's duel with the OZ-00MS2 Tallgeese II near the conclusion of the Eve Wars and not replaced.

• Beam Cannon

Used in the The Glory of Losers manga, it is a high output, long range beam weapon belonging to the defeated remains of a OZ-02MD Virgo. As the beam generator located in the Virgo's right shoulder was intact, this weapon could still be operated.

Special Equipment & Features

• Self-Destruct System

The Altron Gundam was built to self-destruct should the pilot choose to and a remote detonator is placed within the cockpit. The system was designed to overload the mobile suit's power systems and has enough explosive power to destroy several city blocks. It's an option of last resort if the pilot is unable to protect the mobile suit, while not allowing it to fall into enemy hands. It also can be used as one large explosive device to eradicate large targets.

• Parachute Pack

A pack equipped over the Altron's backpack, it has slots in the bottom which the Altron's thrusters protrude through. A hatch on top contains three drouge parachutes. Used to rapidly slow the Altron Gundam's descent after atmospheric entry. Once this had been accomplished, the parachutes are ejected.

History

After the XXXG-01S Shenlong Gundam was damaged and captured by OZ in AC 195, it was taken to OZ's lunar base and mobile suit factory for storage. The five Gundam scientists were also captive at the lunar base, forced to develop new Mobile Suit to secure OZ's rule over Earth and the space colonies. Despite their apparent "cooperation," the scientists also began rebuilding and upgrading both the Shenlong and the damaged XXXG-01D Gundam Deathscythe in secret. Both Wufei and Duo Maxwell would later escape with their upgraded Gundams when the lunar base came under attack, and Wufei would use the Altron Gundam to continue his one man war against OZ and, later, White Fang during the Eve Wars.

The next year, in AC 196, Wufei took the Altron with him when he fell in with a group of OZ remnants lead by Captain Broden, who were searching for the Mobile Doll factory Vulkanus so that they could use it to leave the Earth Sphere and build their own destiny. However, they were not the only ones searching for it, and when their fleet came under attack from the OZ-04MD Virgo IIIs, Wufei was able to destroy them using the Altron. When Vulkanus was located, a three-way battle started between the OZ remnants, the Gundam pilots and the Perfect Peace People (P³), but Broden was assassinated by a P³ collaborator within his own ranks. Victor Gaintz, the leader of the P³ was eventually killed, ending the battle for Vulkanus, but it left Wufei feeling hollow, as he had begun to admire Broden's philosophy. When the other four Gundam pilots agreed to send their Gundams into the sun on the Vulkanus to be destroyed, Wufei was the only one who refused.

Wufei later joined the Mariemaia Army. He then fought against Heero Yuy twice with the Altron, once when the latter was piloting an outdated OZ-06MS Leo while infiltrating X-18999, and the second time when Heero was piloting the XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero, which Quatre had managed to recover and returned to Earth. Wufei, seeing that people were now fighting for peace and not just waiting for peace to come, opposed the Mariemaia Army during the battle in Brussels. After the failed rebellion, the Altron was self-detonated by Wufei.

Notes and Trivia

• Like it predecessor, Altron is referred to by Chang Wufei as Nataku, the nickname of his late wife Meilan Long.
• At the time of Endless Waltz​'s release, Bandai had not yet figured out a naming scheme to differentiate the new Katoki versions of the five Gundams for merchandising. Altron, the first release in the Endless Waltz line of model kits was released under the name "Gundam Nataku" while the others were released as "Gundam Name Custom." In later years, Bandai would refer to all the redesigned Gundams as "Gundam Name EW".
• The "Futier" equipment in Glory of the Losers likely draws its name from a Chinese word for butterfly, Húdié (胡蝶).
