The X-EX01 Gundam Calibarn (X-EX01 ガンダムキャリバーン X-EX01 Gandamu Kyaribān?) is a mobile suit introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam the Witch from Mercury. It is used by Suletta Mercury near the finale of Season 2.
Technology and Combat Characteristics[]
The Vanadis Institute developed countless prototype units in addition to the Lfrith before the establishment of GUND FORMAT technology.[1] Of these units, the Calibarn took the most strikingly different direction from that of the Lfrith.[1] Unlike the Lfrith, which could be operated with minimal impact on the human body within a certain Permet Score, Calibarn prioritized mobile suit performance to seek the utmost limits of GUND-ARM capabilities and adopted extreme measures that did not guarantee the pilot's life protection at all.[1] After losing to the Lfrith in the development competition, it is said that all records of the Calibarn were destroyed, and it was made off-limits and sealed away.[1] Although it aimed to become the mainstream of GUND-ARMS, the Calibarn could very well have been considered the most cursed of all Gundams from the public sentiments.[1]
Armaments[]
- Beam Vulcan
- Two firing ports are built in the forehead. These are weak rapid firing beam weapons used for checking enemy movement, damaging equipment, etc.
- Escutcheon
- A multi-purpose platform made up of 11 Bit Staves that had been equipped to the Aerial.[1] It functions not only as a shield but also as a GUND-BIT, a next-generation remote-controlled swarm weapon system.[1]
- Bit Stave
- Each bit (Bit Stave) can be detached to be operated as a mobile turret with built-in Beam Cannons or as a shield.
- Variable Rod Rifle
- A long portable firearm and the main weapon of the Calibarn.[1] On its rear-end sits a propulsion unit made of four Quadra Thrusters, which can also be used to propel the Calibarn itself.[1]
- Beam Saber
- A weapon for close combat that generates a beam blade, two are stored on top of the backpack.
Equipment[]
- Shell Unit
- With a distinct control system from that of Lfrith-types, the Calibarn's Shell Unit also emits a unique rainbow-hued light depending on its GUND FORMAT operation level.[1]
Modes[]
- High Maneuverability Mode
- A form in which the unit's legs expand outwards, complete with features specialized for posture control during space movement.[1]
- Bit on Form
- By connecting the Bit Staves to the hardpoints throughout the machine, not only is it possible to quickly replenish electric power and propellant to the Bits, but it also improves the mobility and defensive performance of the Calibarn itself.
History[]
A Gundam-type mobile suit developed in competition against the XGF-02 Gundam Lfrith, the machine's lack of features to ensure pilot safety from the GUND Format meant the Lfrith was ultimately chosen as Ochs Earth's main Gundam, and all development records of the Calibarn were deleted after[2]. The Calibarn was later seized by the Space Assembly League during the Vanadis Incident, where it was called a "monster" due to its deadly characteristics.[3]
The Calibarn would be piloted by Suletta Mercury to confront Ericht Samaya and Prospera Mercury, who were planning to use Quiet Zero to take control of the Earth Sphere[4]. After the Space Assembly League's Interplanetary Laser Transmission System heavily damages the Gundam Aerial Rebuild, Suletta, along with Ericht, would commandeer the Aerial's GUND Bits for the Calibarn along with taking control of the Gundam Pharact and Gundam Schwarzette to create a data storm powerful enough to remotely shut down the Interplanetary Laser. The resulting data storm would ultimately disintegrate all nearby machines using the GUND Format, including the Calibarn.

Notes & Trivia[]
- The Calibarn's overall aesthetics is meant to represent/symbolize the series' primary motif (technology wise): a witch.
- Hence, one of Calibarn's pose while holding its Variable Rod Rifle is reminiscent of a witch riding a magic broom.
- Calibarn shares some similarities with the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam in terms of appearance. Both are white mobile suits having some multi-colored shells around their bodies. Specifically, when Calibarn's shell units are active, it bears a striking resemblance to the Unicorn when transformed into its Destroy Mode.
- Multiple scenes from the show (i.e. Calibarn's first sortie) has also been made comparisons to those from Gundam Unicorn.
- Calibarn's name references both Caliban (a half-monster enslaved to Prospero) from Shakespeare's The Tempest and the legendary sword Caliburn of Arthurian Legend.
- The EX in its Model Number, combined with its name, is likely a reference to the more famous sword in Arthurian Legend, Excalibur. It should be noted that in most variants of Arthurian legend, Caliburn and Excalibur are considered different names referring to the same sword.
