Wired Gunbarrel is a weapon system introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.

Technical Information

A Wired Gunbarrel is a remote weapon pod controlled by a Mobile Weapon by means of a reinforced wire. Thanks to the wire, the Wired Gunbarrel receives a continuous supply of energy from the mobile weapon's power source. Typically, a Wired Gunbarrel houses ranged weapons, however, it can also be equipped with close-range armaments without any issue. This system allows the equipped mobile weapon to attack an enemy from multiple directions, or for attacking multiple enemy units at once. However, the use of a Wired Gunbarrel requires the pilot to possess a high degree of spatial awareness, otherwise, a pilot controlling multiple Wired Gunbarrels risks tangling them together or impacting them against nearby surroundings.

History

The Wired Gunbarrel was created by the Atlantic Federation and debuted on the TS-MA2mod.00 Moebius Zero. However, due to a shortage of pilots who have high spatial awareness, the Moebius Zero never saw mass production. Instead, the limited number of Moebius Zeros produced were organized into a special division within the Earth Alliance's military.

In C.E. 71, the Earth Alliance used the Moebius Zero as a basis and developed the AQM/E-X04 Gunbarrel Striker, a mobile armor that could also function as a Striker Pack for the GAT-01A1 Dagger, forming the GAT-01A1+AQM/E-X04 Gunbarrel Dagger. Like the Moebius Zero, the Gunbarrel Striker was equipped with four Wired Gunbarrels, but they have different weaponry. In the same year, ZAFT developed their own version of a remote weapons system, the DRAGOON system.

Sometime between C.E.72 and C.E.73, the Earth Alliance produced a limited number of TS-MA4F Exus, a mobile armor derived from the Moebius Zero and the Gunbarrel Striker. Unlike both its predecessors, the Exus's Gunbarrels were equipped with beam weaponry.

In C.E.75, the ZAFT-produced LHM-BB03S Millennium planetary assault battleship was put into service with Compass, equipped with 4 Separate Guided Cannons which are large tethered turrets working under the same principal as Wired Gunbarrels.

Notes & Trivia

• The Wired Gunbarrel resembles the Quasi-Psycommu and INCOM weapons of the Universal Century. However, the latter two were developed for use by normal pilots who have no special abilities.
