The White Base was a Pegasus-class assault landing ship appearing in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin and its OVA adaptation.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
The first ship of the Pegasus-class, the White Base was the first assault landing ship designed by the Earth Federation Forces for the utilization of mobile suits.[1] It was designed as a space cruiser,[2] but disguised as a civilian supply vessel to avoid suspicion.[1] To that end, all of its weapons were concealed, making it appear unarmed. Its two mobile suit decks, which served as catapults, hangars, and maintenance space, could store three mobile suits in each mobile suit deck and an additional two on the catapults.[1] Because of its unique shape, with two large mobile suit decks at the front and two engine blocks at the back, resembling a rocking horse, it was nicknamed the "Trojan Horse" by Zeon forces.
In addition to space flight, the White Base was also capable of atmospheric entry and long-distance atmospheric flight, thanks to the Minovsky Craft at the center of the ship.[1] It was equipped with two pairs of variable wings, the main wings at the top and the auxiliary wings to the sides, with the latter only deployed during atmospheric flight. When entering the atmosphere, its wings and vertical stabilizers would fold inward, its bridge would retract, and the antennas on the bridge and the radar dishes on either side would fold inward.
When Ramba Ral attacked the White Base, he identified the stern of the ship as a weakpoint due to its lack of firepower coverage. This was rectified after the White Base arrived at Jaburo, where it received a major overhaul. Additional armor was installed to vulnerable points, such as the back of the bridge. Additional weapons, including two beam cannon turrets, additional anti-aircraft guns, and a 4-barrel beam gun at the stern of the ship, were installed. Finally, to compensate for the added weight, the thrust of the engines were increased by 50%.
Armaments[]
- Twin Mega Particle Cannon
- The White Base mounted a retractable twin mega particle cannon turret in each circular "shield" on either side of the ship.
- Anti-Aircraft Gun
- Numerous retractable anti-aircraft guns were located all over the ship, including three on each mobile suit deck, four on either side of the central block, two on each engine block, one in front of the bridge, and one behind the bridge. During the overhaul at Jaburo, the gun in front of the bridge was removed to make way for the main gun, a pair of new guns was added to the front of the bridge, and the gun behind the bridge was replaced with a larger model on the back of the bridge.
- 2-tube Missile Launcher
- A pair of 2-tube missile launchers were equipped on the side of each mobile suit deck.
- Main Gun
- A 2-barrel mega particle cannon located on the upper deck, in front of the bridge. It was added during the overhaul at Jaburo.
- Beam Cannon
- A 2-barrel mega particle cannon, smaller than the main gun, located behind the bridge. It was added during the overhaul at Jaburo. Unlike the main gun, this turret appeared to be retractable.
- 4-barrel Beam Gun
- Located at the stern of the ship. It was added during the overhaul at Jaburo.
- Depth Charge Launcher
- For defense against underwater enemies, an unknown number of depth charge launchers were installed on the underside of the ship.
History[]
At some point after the Antarctic Treaty was signed and Zeon began its full-scale invasion of Earth, the White Base launched from Earth and set sail for Luna II, captained by Paolo Cassius, with Federation mobile suit developer Dr. Tem Ray on board.[3]
Side 7[]
On September 18, the White Base entered Side 7.[4][5]
