Variable Phase Shift armor is a technology introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.

Technical Information

An improved version of the Earth Alliance's Phase Shift (PS) armor, the Variable Phase Shift (VPS) armor was developed by ZAFT. Unlike the original PS armor, the strength and power consumption of the VPS armor can be automatically altered to suit the combat configuration or situation that the mobile suit is in. As a result, the mobile suit's colors changes and the VPS armor has better energy efficiency than previous versions PS armor. VPS armor is capable of changing its strength in the field, however the programming for this has to be done beforehand.

History

Developed by ZAFT during the interim between the first and second Alliance-PLANT Wars, Variable Phase Shift armor was the latest version of Phase Shift armor. VPS armor was first incorporated in the Second Stage Series of mobile suits built by ZAFT. One of the mobile suits, the ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam had at least three known VPS armor settings, one for each Silhouette packs.

In October, C.E. 73, the Earth Alliance acquired the technology by stealing three of the Second Stage units from the PLANT military colony, Armory One. Following their acquisition of the technology, the Earth Alliance incorporated it into their Actaeon Project mobile suits, such as the GAT-X105E Strike Noir Gundam.

Members of Terminal inside ZAFT were also able to acquire the data for VPS armor and transmitted it to the secret manufacturing facility, the Factory. There, the technology was used in the creation of the ZGMF-X19A ∞ Justice Gundam and the ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam.
