Vargas Dyson (バルガス・ダイソン) is a supporting character who appears in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam AGE.

Personality & Character[]

Vargas is in charge of maintenance of the ship's equipment and mobile suits after boarding the Diva. He falls in love with Flit Asuno's talent and actively supports the development of the Gundam. Although Flit is his subordinate in terms of position, they are friends on equal terms, and he calls him by his first name. In the novel version of Part 1, he is the head of the maintenance team.

Vargas is a free spirit who loves tinkering with machinery. He is especially fond of Flit's Gundam. Despite his nature, he can be very serious and rational when the situation calls for it, disallowing Largan Drace to pilot the Gundam before it was fully tested and telling Flit not to take war lightly when the latter attempted to pilot the Gundam himself.[1]

History[]

First Generation (A.G. 115)[]

Vargas is the grandfather of Emily Amonde and a technical officer in the maintenance department of Arinston Base, and helps Flit with the Gundam. He hides the mobile suit when the UE attack as it hadn't been fully tested, and opposes Flit when he tries to give it to Largan Drace to use. Flit would then decide to pilot it himself, and though Vargas opposes this too, he gives in after seeing Flit's determination and instead supports him.[1]

After the inhabitants of Nora are ordered to evacuate to the center-core of the colony, Vargas oversees the transport of the AGE System and tells Flit to take the Gundam to the Diva. After boarding the Diva, he is joined by Emily and Dique Gunhale, much to his surprise. The trio head to the AGE System as the Diva departs and Flit finds himself in combat again. He explains what the AGE System is to Emily and Dique while sending out the DODS Rifle to the Gundam.[2] He watches the exchanges between Flit and Woolf Enneacle and advises Flit during their duel.[3]

After arriving in Fardain, Vargas notes how Flit and Desil Galette have a similar aura.[4] Following the battle, he speaks with Largan and tells him how he has doubled the armor on his Genoace. They notice Woolf leaving the Diva. As Flit decides to join the battle against Zalam and Euba, he gets Vargas to bring him the Gundam. Vargas does so and notices that Flit can't use its full power as it would damage the city.[5] After Flit is captured by Zalam, he heads to Iwark Briar's house with Emily. He tries to dissuade her from going to Zalam but eventually relents and instead joins her. They find that Riria has snuck onboard and soon they have a group of children who all want to air their grievances. They do so, and he watches. When Euba attack, he is joined by Grodek Ainoa and they escape back to the Diva. Vargas sends out the Titus so that Flit can fight off the UE who have also joined the fray.[6] After the battle, he marvels at the G-Exes and listens to Woolf boasting about his new mobile suit. When things go wrong in the Madorna Workshop, Vargas sends out the Gundam.[7]

During the battle to defend Fardain, Vargas waits for the AGE System to finish with the Gundam upgrades. Once it is done, he contacts Flit and tells him about the Sparrow, sending it out during the battle for him to equip.[8] Once the Diva reaches Minsry, he works on using the AGE System to upgrade the Diva in accordance with Grodek's wishes. He manages to get the modifications from the system, but laments at being unable to finish the modifications in two weeks. Thanks to Emily, Mukured Madorna boards the ship and helps out. They are able to meet their deadline, though they have to actually test it out during the battle.[9]

On the way to Ambat, Vargas tells Flit about the Photon Blaster Cannon. He operates the weapons when the Diva switches to assault landing mode during the battle.[10] He celebrates their victory after the battle is over.[11]

2nd Generation (A.G. 141)[]

He is 80 to 81 years old. He is the great-grandfather of Asemu and Unoa, and lives with them in the mansion of "Tordia". In preparation for emergencies, he secretly maintains AGE-1 Gundam AGE-1 Normal, which is hidden in a stable in the mansion, with his servants Josse Maris and Hans Rouge. In the second part of the novel version, it is mentioned that he is known as "the god of maintenance" and "the grand master of MS maintenance workers all over the country. It is feared by Asemu that he, who shares the same blood with him, will be shaped like a beer barrel, which is one of the reasons why he devotes himself to club activities and sports.

He passed away before the start of Part 3 (or at least between Asemu and Romary's wedding (A.G. 145) and the birth of Kio (A.G. 151)), and a photo of him before his death appears in the hospital room where Kio was born.
