The Vanadis Institute (ヴァナディース機関, Vanadīsu Kikan^?) are a faction from Mobile Suit Gundam the Witch from Mercury PROLOGUE .

Overview

It was an organization researching the body-function augmentation technology known as "GUND." Though it was conducting research with the goal of assisting the human body in a space environment, it repurposed the GUND technology for military applications, in return for funding received from the mobile suit manufacturing company Ochs Earth .

History

Vanadis Incident

The Vanadis Institute are the original inventors of the GUND-FORMAT, a human-augmentation technology created to allow Earthians to better adapt to outer space environments. While their invention was originally meant for medical purposes, they were eventually acquired by Ochs Earth Corporation, who began using it as a piloting interface for a new type of mobile suit named "GUND-ARMs"; popularly known as "Gundams", for military purposes. However, this put immense strain on the pilots' minds, which often proved fatal, causing the company to face mass public backlash. Similarly, the Mobile Suit Development Council feared that the revolutionary weapon could upset the balance of power between Earthians and Spacians. Thus, before the project could be finished, the council took extreme measures by forcefully seizing control of Ochs Earth under business administrative laws and founding the Benerit Group to oversee the future development of mobile suits. At the same time, the group's newly appointed president, Delling Rembran, ordered an unsanctioned attack on Fólkvangr, assassinating the Gundam project's lead scientist, Dr. Cardo Nabo, and killing most of the crew. However, the project's test pilot, Elnora Samaya, and her daughter, Ericht Samaya, managed to escape using the Lfrith.

• Vanadis is another name of the Norse goddess Freyja, who rules over Fólkvangr and receives half of those who die in battle, the other half going to Odin in Valhalla.
