Ultimate Coordinator is a term introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
Overview & Development Process[]
A subtype of the standard Coordinator genetic type, an Ultimate Coordinator is essentially a perfected Coordinator, possessing a higher potential for advanced intelligence, physical capabilities, and improved health, while having none of the genetic anomalies found in a standard Coordinator, such as diminished motility.
An Ultimate Coordinator is created by removing a developing embryo from its mother’s womb and placing it in an Artificial Womb, where every attribute can be scientifically controlled. The child’s genetic structure is then altered for the maximization of positive traits while eliminating uncertain or negative factors. The child remains in the Artificial Womb until it reaches infancy to ensure the alterations have been maintained.[1]
History[]
Origins and Development[]
The concept of the Ultimate Coordinator was proposed by the geneticist, Dr. Ulen Hibiki, who recognized a growing issue in Coordinator development. Ulen concluded that the minor errors inherent in the Coordinator creation process was not only limiting their potential, but would lead to diminished fertility and eventually result in a birthing crisis. To find a solution, Ulen began the Ultimate Coordinator Project at the Mendel Colony's G.A.R.M. R&D Facility. Eventually, he discovered that the problem lay in the Coordinator's embryonic development and that the largest factor for error resided in the mother's womb, which was not able to properly support the alterations made to the child's DNA, resulting in the emergence of undesired traits. To rectify the issue, Ulen and his team constructed the Artificial Womb, a device capable of sustaining the life of the infant outside of its mother's womb.[1]
The Survivor: Canard Pars[]
Despite the successful construction of the Artificial Womb, the creation of an Ultimate Coordinator was still fraught with difficulties leading to many failures. Nearly all of the failed test subjects were killed, with one exception, Canard Pars, who was secretly rescued by one of the lab assistants. Canard ended up in the Eurasian Federation, where he was experimented on by their scientists in an attempt to reverse engineer the Ultimate Coordinator Project. However, despite his impressive abilities, Cannard's full potential, while greater than a regular Coordinator's, would never be at the same level as a truly perfected Coordinator. The experiment ultimately failed, and in C.E. 71 Canard was transferred to the Eurasian military to pilot their prototype mobile suit, the CAT1-X1/3 Hyperion Gundam Unit 1.[2]
The Successor: Kira Yamato[]
After numerous failures, the project eventually reached a point where Ulen believed he could create a viable Ultimate Coordinator. For the final test subject, Ulen chose his unborn son, as he wanted him to be born with the highest human potential. The experiment succeeded and Kira Hibiki, the Ultimate Coordinator, was born on May 18, C.E. 55. Following Kira's birth, the terrorist group Blue Cosmos launched an attack on the Mendel Colony to kill everyone involved in the program. Blue Cosmos killed Ulen and destroyed the Ultimate Coordinator research, however, Kira survived the attack, having been safely put in the care of his aunt (and later adopted mother) Caridad Yamato. Kira grew up completely unaware of the circumstances of his birth for the first 16 years of his life, until the truth of his origins were revealed to him by Rau Le Creuset at the G.A.R.M. R&D Facility during the Battle of Mendel.[3][1]
