Twin Drive System

The Twin Drive System (or Twin Drive) is a next-generation drive system in Mobile Suit Gundam 00 that synchronizes two GN Drives to exponentially increase their GN Particles generation rate.

Overview[]

The Twin Drive is a 200-year-old GN technological concept drafted by Aeolia Schenberg himself. The theory is that by synchronizing two GN Drives, the Twin Drive System caused the resulting GN Particles output to be squared that of a single GN Drive rather than merely doubled.[1] This theory was hidden within the quantum processing system Veda until AD 2308, when Aeolia's death triggered a system trap within Veda, sending the data to Celestial Being engineers.

A similar system was thought up by Celestial Being engineers independently much earlier than Aeolia's theory/concept/design was released to them, and it was initially planned to be tested on the GNY-004 Gundam Plutone.[2] However, the extreme difficulty in synchronizing two GN Drives made such a system close to impossible to create thus the idea was abandoned at that point in time.[2]

The most significant complication with Aeolia's Twin Drive system theory is that a number of elements have to be met for this system to operate stably, with the most prominent being the compatibly between the two GN Drives. None of the first five GN Drives produced were perfectly compatible with each other, though the system can still function if the two drives are compatible to a certain degree. Additionally, when the GN Drives are paired, both drives must maintain a stable synchronization rate of over 80% for the Twin Drive System to function and initiate the squaring of particle output.[3] Due to these compatibility and synchronization issues, the first mobile suit to be equipped with the Twin Drive System, the GN-0000 00 Gundam, was unable to fully stabilize the system by itself.

In the face of such stability issues, the support machine GNR-010 0 Raiser was installed with stabilization equipment to properly regulate the system. By combining the 00 Gundam with the 0 Raiser to form the GN-0000+GNR-010 00 Raiser, the Twin Drive System was stabilized and could function properly. Additionally, when the Trans-Am System was activated, the 00 Raiser's GN Particle output soared to more than 300%.

The Innovators subsequently stole the data on the Twin Drive System and reverse-engineered it to be compatible with the GN Drive Tau, resulting in the CB-0000G/C Reborns Gundam. However, a Twin Drive System using two GN Drive Taus is not the same as a Twin Drive System using two GN Drives.[4][5] The former is said to be an imitation of the latter and only has some of the Twin Drive System's effects.[4] It is currently unclear if the amount of GN Particles produced by a Twin Drive System using two GN Drive Taus is squared that of a single GN Drive Tau.[6]

Because the performance of a Large GN Condenser is comparable to a GN Drive, in theory, it can be used as components for the Twin Drive System[7] albeit with a limited operation time and particle count. Furthermore, the effects of a Twin Drive System based on two Large GN Condensers may not be identical to that of the original system which utilized two GN Drives.[4] Sometime between AD 2312 and prior to the appearance of ELS in AD 2314, Celestial Being managed to realize this concept and implemented it on the GN-0000RE+GNR-010 00 Raiser GN Condenser Type.[8]

Between AD 2312 and 2314, Celestial Being was also said to have received new schematic data from Tieria for an improved Twin Drive System that he obtained while sleeping.[9] This new system was created and custom-tuned to compliment Setsuna F. Seiei, who had become a true Innovator. When the new Twin Drive was utilized with the new Quantum System, the two GN Drives are physically joined, increasing GN particle generation even further; however the full details and capabilities of its functions are not fully defined.

Development[]

The theory behind the Twin Drive System technology was developed by Aeolia Schenberg and hidden inside the quantum processing system Veda. When Aeolia was gunned down by Alejandro Corner in AD 2308, Aeolia's system trap caused the theory to be transmitted from Veda to Celestial Being.

GN Drive Compatibility Tests[]

Sometime after their defeat by the United Nations Forces in AD 2308, Celestial Being conducted matching tests with the four GN Drives at their disposal by installing two GN Drives at a time into the 00 Gundam and activating the Twin Drive System. However, no permutation of Drives could achieve stable synchronization. During this time, the location of Setsuna and his Gundam Exia is unknown. Setsuna and Exia's GN Drive were eventually recovered in AD 2312, and the final test was conducted. Although Exia's and 0 Gundam's GN Drives generated the highest synchronization rate out of all their previous tests, they could only reach 70% synchronization and failed to reach the stable threshold. Tieria suggested using Trans-Am to force the system to start, but the idea was considered too dangerous since a system overload might result in the destruction of both GN Drives.

Mobile Suits[]

00 Gundam/00 Raiser[]

The GN-0000 00 Gundam is the first mobile suit to utilize the Twin Drive System. The 00 Gundam's Twin Drive System was finally activated when Setsuna took a risky gambit and used the Trans-Am System to force the two GN Drives to synchronize and cross the stable threshold. Despite this, the system remained highly unstable and subsequent uses of the Trans-Am System overloaded 00 Gundam's systems, causing the synchronization ratio to drop below the minimum threshold. To stabilize the 00 Gundam's Twin Drive System and enable it to function properly, the support craft GNR-010 0 Raiser was turned into a stabilization equipment for the Twin Drive System.

As a result, when the 0 Raiser docked with 00 Gundam to form the GN-0000+GNR-010 00 Raiser, the Twin Drive System was stabilized and the mobile suit achieved extraordinary performance, surpassing all previous Gundams. Conversely, should the 0 Raiser disconnect or have its system damaged while docked, 00 Gundam will no longer be capable of fighting at its full power or, in some cases, be inoperable.[10] The 00 Raiser's incredibly high output of GN Particles in Trans Am Mode is likely a factor for Setsuna's evolution into a True Innovator.

Reborns Gundam[]

Using the Twin Drive System data stolen from Celestial Being by the spy, Anew Returner, the Innovators managed to develop their own Twin Drive System-equipped mobile suit, the CB-0000G/C Reborns Gundam.[11][12][13] Since the Innovators do not possess the original GN Drives, the Reborns Gundam's Twin Drive System utilized two GN Drive Taus.[14][15][16]

Due to the inherent differences in the characteristics between the original GN Drive and GN Drive Tau, a Twin Drive System using two GN Drive Taus only has some of the Twin Drive System's original effects.[4][5] Notably, it is unclear whether the GN Particles produced by a Twin Drive System using two GN Drive Taus is indeed squared that of a single GN Drive Tau.[6] However, simulations conducted by the Innovators showed that a Twin Drive System using GN Drive Taus has comparable performance to a Twin Drive System using original GN Drives.[16] Additionally, the Reborns Gundam's output is said to rival that of the 00 Raiser.[13][17] It is known that technological innovations have almost eliminated the performance difference between the two types of GN Drives.[11][15]

00 Qan[T][]

The GNT-0000 00 Qan[T] possesses two new GN Drives specifically made for its Twin Drive System. These two GN Drives served as replacement for those of the 00 Gundam/00 Raiser, which were lost during the final battle with the Innovators. Manufactured using Celestial Being's optically camouflaged GN Drive factories located in the Jupiter sphere by a team of technical staff led by Linda Vashti, the two new GN Drives are equipped with GN Particle generators customized for the Twin Drive System. This pair of GN Drives are perfectly synchronized, and 00 Qan[T]'s Twin Drive system operated stably from the moment it was started up, so there is no need for external stabilization equipment, such as the 0 Raiser. As an insurance, Celestial Being did develop a stabilization equipment for the 00 Qan[T]'s Twin Drive System in the form of the GN Sword IV Full Saber, but it was never equipped since there was no issue with the system.
