Trans-Phase armor (aka Trans Phase armor) is a technology introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.

Technical Information

An improved version of the Phase Shift (PS) armor, Trans-Phase armor is a double layer armor system, with the PS armor placed behind normal armor. The inner PS Armor only activates when the outer layer is breached, thus saving energy and preventing the continuous consumption of large quantities of energy until the armor is turned off. As a result of this, the equipped mobile suit's colors never change, and has longer operational time as well as more energy for their power-hungry beam weapons.

History

During the First Alliance-PLANT War, the Earth Alliance sought to improve their PS armor technology. This resulted in the Trans-Phase armor, which is more energy efficient than its predecessor. The first mobile suits equipped with Trans-Phase armor were the second generation G Project Gundams, the GAT-X131 Calamity Gundam, the GAT-X252 Forbidden Gundam, and the GAT-X370 Raider Gundam. As the war continued, the Alliance incorporated the Trans-Phase armor in a number of limited production mobile suits, including the GAT-X133 Sword Calamity Gundam, the GAT-X255 Forbidden Blue, and the GAT-333 Raider Full Spec.

At around the same time, Junk Guild's Lowe Guele also independently conceived such a two-layer armor system, which was installed around the cockpit of the MBF-P03secondL Gundam Astray Blue Frame Second L by Orb Union's Morgenröte Inc.. By the Second Alliance-PLANT War, the Alliance had created the GAT-707E Forbidden Vortex, the first mass-production mobile suit equipped with Trans-Phase armor.
