Please note that this is the Gundam Wiki's article on the character from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin; if you are looking for the article on the main character of Stampede: The Story of Professor Minovsky then you should head to Trenov Y. Minovsky.

Torenov Y. Minovsky is a character that appears in the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin and its OVA adaptation. Dr. Minovsky was the discoverer of the Minovsky particle, and a pioneer of Minovsky physics. He mentored Tem Ray and served as a technical advisor during the development of the mobile suit by the Zeon forces.[1] The fundamental theories proposed by Dr. Minovsky, would lead to revolutionary technologies such as the development of compact fusion reactors, the dispersal of Minovsky particles to jam communications, sensors, and guided weapons, and the Minovsky Craft system. He had cooperated with Zeon's weapons development in order to prove his own theories. However, this had resulted in the creation of a monster.[2] When he attempted to defect to the Earth Federation, he was intercepted on the lunar surface by a mobile suit team led by Ramba Ral, losing his life.[1]

History

U.C. 0073

T.Y. Minovsky was tech advisor for the Autonomous Republic of Zeon's MS Plan. Gihren Zabi wanted a tour of the site that he was working at and wanted to cancel the project because it provided unsatisfactory results. T.Y. Minovsky honorably introduced himself to Dozle Zabi and agreed with the validity of Gihren's points about the critical power issue Zeon's mobile suits then had. Wanting to avoid the cancellation of the project, T.Y. Minovsky explained to Gihren that a compact fusion reactor was well within their reach. He presented, to the two Zabi brothers, blueprints of the MI-11 he drew up.[3][4]

U.C. 0078

Dr. Minovsky had secretly sent a video of an MS-04 Bugu test flights to the Federation Forces because he now wished to defect to the Federation from the Autonomous Republic of Zeon. This video was also a warning to the Federation government.[2] In the Earth Federation General HQ in Brasilia, Admiral Gopp showed the video to Dr. Minovsky's former student, Tem Ray.[5] The instant Tem saw the video, he knew that Dr. Minovsky had finally completed the mobile suit that he had dreamed of for so many years.[2] Outside of the room where they viewed the video, Admiral Gopp informed Tem Ray of his mentor's defection and asked him to go to the moon to assist with Dr. Minovsky's journey from Zeonic in Granada to Anaheim Electronics in Von Braun.[5]

The attempt ultimately failed when Minovsky's car was found by the Black Tri-Stars, Ramba Ral and Char Aznable. Despite Federation mobile suits being sent to rescue him, the rescue team was quickly overwhelmed by the Zeon aces despite outnumbering them, and Minovsky was killed when one of the Federation units was knocked towards him, crushing him.

Legacy

Minovsky's death would cause his student, Tem Ray, to work earnestly to fight against the Zeon forces. Tem would continue from Minovsky's initial ideas for mobile suits with the development and eventual completion of the RX-78-02 Gundam.
