Toniya Malme (トニヤ・マーム) is a character from the anime After War Gundam X.

Personality & Character

In contrast to her fellow operator Sala Tyrrell, she has a cheerful and free-spirited personality. She has a penchant for handsome men, though she is also quick to criticize men when they push their weight around, such as Witz Sou.

She is friendly and caring, looking out for Garrod Ran (who had just joined the crew) and Tiffa Adil when they are down and helping to encourage Ennil El. She was also upset when she learnt about Witz' family.

History

Toniya is a communications officer on the Freeden.

Life as a Vulture

She and Sala are often seen at odds with Witz and Roybea Loy, a pair of freelance Vultures who are not loyal to the Freeden. However, they put their differences aside and work together. She watches in shock as Garrod unleashes the Satellite Cannon. After Garrod boards the ship, she goes to see him in his cell. She is also present when Olba Frost boards the Freeden, going over to greet him. She does not agree with Jamil Neate's plan to go after the Alternative Company's labs in order to treat Tiffa and listens as Sala questions why he is so fixated on her, but accepts Jamil's explanation.

Toniya listens after Garrod causes an accident which results in some crew members getting injured. She visits Tiffa afterwards and tells her that Garrod is probably depressed over what happened. She asks Tiffa to put some makeup on and cheer him up. Tiffa refuses, saying she doesn't know how, but Toniya leaves some lipstick with her anyway. After Garrod's recklessness causes Jamil to get injured she attempts to scold Garrod but is stopped by Sala, who slaps him. When they later hear from the doctor that the operation was a success and the topic of Garrod comes up, Toniya agrees with Kid Salsamille's guess that Garrod was just trying to show off for Tiffa.

After Sala hires Roybea to protect the Freeden while Jamil is out cold, she is surprised to see that Witz has tagged along. She questions what he wanted to leave in the Freeden's custody, and is shocked when she sees his treasure trove. When Kid finds Witz' family photo, Toniya takes it to Witz and returns it to him. She teases him about being so attached to his family and comments about how similar he looks to his youngest brother. He gets angry and tells her that his youngest brother actually passed away from colony sickness. Toniya is very upset by this and ponders over it in the shower later on.

Fort Severn

On the way to Fort Severn, Toniya and Sala are shocked when they see Roybea's new recreation room. Although Sala disapproves, Toniya is quite happy with what she sees. After the trio of Gundam pilots are taken out by Carris Nautilus, she is seen treating Witz. She infiltrates Fort Severn along with Sala in order to gather information and later reports back to the crew on the Freeden.

Toniya and Sala are surprised to see Witz and Roybea eating at the cafeteria with the others. When the conversation turns to Garrod's love life with Tiffa, they are surprised by how serious the duo get when it comes to the passage of time. Toniya and a few others are called to the recreation room by Roybea, and he gifts her a swimsuit. He explains that this is a good opportunity for a break. Jamil overhears and agrees with Roybea. Toniya is then seen relaxing on the beach with the others. She teases Garrod who is by himself and asks if it's because Tiffa isn't there. As they speak, they notice Tiffa leaving the shore on a boat and head back to the Freeden to retrieve her. The next day, Garrod reports to Jamil about seeing the Satellite System being used in the distance. Toniya asks Shingo what that means, and he explains to her that it means someone else is also using a Gundam X.

While on Saints Island, Toniya ends up arguing with Miles Goodman, who is being given guided around the ship by Sala. She is surprised when she sees the islands paper currency. Sala entrusts her personal shopping to Toniya, staying behind on the Freeden. Toniya asks her if she will use the opportunity to make her move on Jamil as they will be alone, but Sala says she isn't assertive enough. Techcs enters the room for some secret pool practice, further decreasing her chances of confessing. While shopping, she spots a nice dress and decides to buy it. She is a few moments too late as the dress is being tried on by Ennil. Toniya leaves the store, disappointed, but Ennil follows after her with the dress. She explains that she didn't actually like the dress that much and lets her have it. Toniya accepts and takes her out to lunch as a thank-you. They quickly become friends, and Toniya agrees to visit Ennil at her bar later that night. She heads out in the dress that Ennil gave her and the two talk about Ennil's marriage proposal. Toniya knows that Ennil doesn't feel at home and invites her to join the Freeden. Ennil is on the cusp on accepting, but Miles walks in and request an answer to his proposal. Toniya recognises him and he in turn recognises her as a crew member from the Freeden. Ennil is shocked by the news and runs away. Toniya stands around in the morning outside the Freeden in case she shows up, but returns to the ship in disappointment. Tiffa tells her that the person she is waiting for won't come, and she tells Garrod that she was waiting for Ennil El. Garrod immediately recognises the name and presumably tells Toniya about their past. Ennil later confronts the Freeden in her new Esperansa, swooping past the Gundam pilot and stopping right in front of the command room. Toniya stares on in shock after Tiffa reveals the pilots identity to her, and watches on as Ennil leaves.

As they reach the general area where Garrod saw the beam, the Freeden continue their search. The crew soon receive a distress signal from a group of fishermen. Thanks to Tiffa's foresight, they learn that the fishermen are actually enemies and Jamil has them imprisoned. Toniya praises Tiffa for her actions. They later find the Frost brothers attacking Ennil at sea and after they rescue her, Toniya stays by her side as she is taken to the sickbay for treatment. She learns from Ennil that there is a Gundam nearby. The Freeden heads towards Zonder Epta (where she saw the Gundam) and the crew fight against the forces of the New United Nations Earth forces, but are forced to surrender in the face of the Gundam Double X's Satellite Cannon. During her captivity on Zonder Epta, she discusses the breakout plan with the others. When she admits she is worried, Witz reassures Toniya by telling her that he will protect her. She gets annoyed at Kid's suggestion that Ennil may not be on their side. The crew make their escape, but realise their plans were leaked and end up in a shootout against the New UNE. She is happy to see Ennil on their side.

South Asia Front

Toniya is upset when Ennil leaves the Freeden without saying anything, but pretends to be happy nonetheless. She notices that Tiffa is also feeling lonely as Garrod is spending more time worrying about the war than with her, and attempts to comfort her. After the fall of Northernbell, she looks for Garrod and Witz with Tiffa. She learns from Techcs that they are sleeping and decides to wake them up, but he warns them not to as the pair are exhausted from the battle. She heads to her room in disappointment and finds that Sala is also lonely due to Roybea not returning and the Captain being busy. She laments how everyone has been acting strange ever since the New UNE showed up.

After Tiffa is taken away, the crew head to a New UNE supply base in order to allow Garrod to chase after her. The New UNE soon arrive and attack the supply base. Sala and the others attempt to hold them off until Garrod can launch. She persuades Jamil along with Sala and Shingo Mori to allow them ram the Freeden into the enemy Bandaal. After the Bandaal is brought down and the Freeden destroyed, Toniya watches as Garrod flies off into space.

8th Space War

Toniya is captured along with the other crew members by the New UNE, and they are taken away for execution. They are rescued by Carris Nautilus. The crew learn that Garrod and Tiffa have already returned from space and reunite with them together with Carris. They head with Carris to the New Orleans Base, and Jamil requests some time to think about what the crew should do. The crew learns that the New UNE and the SRA are heading towards a full blown war, and Toniya worries about the bleak future heading their way. During this time, she is proposed to by Witz. Ennil sees this and asks her about it. Although the feeling was mutual, Toniya was shocked by how sudden it was. She alerts the others the next day when Tiffa collapses. After they steal a ship from the rebels, Toniya boards the new Freeden II as the ships communication officer and heads to the moon with the others. After the war begins, Toniya continues with her role on the Freeden II. She is brought to the moon by D.O.M.E. along with the others, and listens as D.O.M.E. reveals the truth about Newtypes.

Six months after the war, she travels with Witz to his hometown. She is impressed by the view and happy that she joined him. Ennil soon arrives with Roybea and reveals that she wanted to be with her, so will be moving into the town. The duo drive off, leaving Witz and Roybea behind.

Relationships

Sala Tyrrell

Toniya and Sala are friends who are often seen together. Sala often rebukes Toniya because of her easygoing attitude, while Toniya tends to be the more lighthearted one. Toniya also supports her romantic life.

Witz & Toniya at the end of Gundam X

Witz Sou

Toniya and Witz often argued with her, and Toniya was often annoyed by his brash attitude. She was upset when she learnt of his circumstances and the pair became closer over time, eventually developing feelings for each other. Though surprised by Witz' proposal, she accepts it after the war and returns to his hometown with him.

Ennil El

Toniya quickly befriends Ennil on Saints Island, and wants her to join the Freeden crew. She is shocked and upset when she finds out that they are enemies, but continues to believe in her. They continue their friendship as Ennil joins the crew in their battles against the New UNE and later the SRA. Ennil moves to Witz' hometown to be with Toniya after the war is over.
