The Witch's War is the fourth episode of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. It was released worldwide on April 30, 2025.

Synopsis[]

A super unicum known as the "Witch," who shot down over 100 enemies during the One Year War, enters the Clan Battle to settle an old score with the Red Gundam. Seeing this Witch, who clings to mobile suit combat even at the cost of abandoning her husband and child, Machu witnesses the depths of human obsession.

Plot[]

Amate and Shuji continue their Clan Battle winning streak, earning great interest from Challia and the crew of the Sodon. Public protests against Zeon interference break out among Side 6 residents as Sodon remains stationary over colonial airspace, with Ward and Chaichi remarking on potential trouble with Zeon as Gihren Zabi and Kycillia Zabi squabble for control over the Principality.

One day, while hanging out in the Red Gundam's hangar, Shuji suggests taking a trip to Earth to Amate and Nyaan with the money they've earned, hoping to bring the Red Gundam with him. As Amate eagerly fascinates over the idea of going to Earth, Nyaan is informed by her handler that there is a bounty on the Red Gundam.

At the Pomeranians' hideout, Amate and Jezzi meet a young woman asking around the area for a junk trader shop. Bringing her into the office, Annqi reveals that she is Shiiko Sugai, a ex-Federation pilot who earned the nickname "The Witch" during the One Year War for her incredible kill record. Shiiko explains that she is searching for the Red Gundam and its pilot, despite having settled down after the war and started a family. The group turns her away, but before she leaves, Shiiko inquires Amate about the Red Gundam's pilot, only for Amate to realize that she doesn't really know anything about Shuji. That night, Amate is informed that The Witch has entered her next Clan Battle match as Shiiko emerges from a mobile suit simulation module, consulting Federation scientist Mosk Han about his suit's capability to defeat a Gundam.

Amate and Shuji deploy against Clan CRS, a team secretly backed by military contractors. Pomeranians is shocked to discover that rather than the Light-Type Guncannons they were expecting, CRS has deployed two gMS-01 Gelgoog units, Gundam-derived mass-produced suits that have not been released to the general public. As the fight begins, Shiiko makes an aggressive first move and closes the distance between herself and Amate; when Amate attempts to strike, Shiiko's Gelgoog suddenly shifts at lightning speed and out of her sight. Challia surmises that the suit must be equipped with an experimental friction-cancelling drive system developed by Mosk. Ignoring her MAV Bocata's pleas to calm down, Shiiko evades Amate's attempts to fight and assaults the Red Gundam.

Shiiko and Shuji duke it out in close-quarters combat. Despite Shuji's Newtype abilities, he finds Shiiko's Gelgoog impossible to hit, giving her the upper hand. Challia explains that Shiiko's hallmark is a technique known as "Stigma Attack"; using a custom, imperceptible grappling hook to latch onto enemy mobile suits, Shiiko is able to outmaneuver her opponents with incredible finesse and lethality. A flashback reveals that Shiiko's MAV was killed by Char and the Red Gundam during the One Year War; despite leaving the battlefront, she became obsessed with taking vengeance on the Red Gundam ever since. As Shiiko closes in on Shuji, their Newtype senses react to each other and they begin to sense each others' thoughts. Meanwhile, Amate and the Sodon begin to hear a mysterious singing, which Challia recognizes from the Second Battle of Solomon as the "La-La Sound".

Continuing to deny the existence of Newtypes, Shiiko deploys her final technique, entrapping Shuji with two beam rifles while she moves in for the killshot. Just as she is about to strike, the Red Gundam suddenly vanishes. Before she has a chance to locate her opponent, the Red Gundam reappears behind Shiiko and pushes its beam saber into the Gelgoog's cockpit, killing her. As Shiiko dies, Amate is enveloped by the Kira-Kira and she witnesses Shiiko and Shuji's final conversation with each other. In her last moments, Shiiko warns Amate that there is "someone else on the other side of the Gundam" and finally receives closure for her hatred before passing on. Amate stares on, mortified, as the Gelgoog explodes, enveloping the Red Gundam.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • On-Air End Card: gMS-01 Gelgoog
    • Initially, the thumbnail provided by Amazon was different from the end card of the episode. It was later changed so that the thumbnail matches the end card.
  • Despite fan speculation during the release of the compilation movie and the trailer of the show, the mobile suit that resembles the GM, colloquially called "Zeon GM" and correctly inferred to be the mass produced version of Red Gundam by Zeon, is not named GM but instead named as gMS-01 Gelgoog.

Continuity Notes[]

Callbacks to previous Gundam series[]

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket

  • Shiiko's Gelgoog simulation scene mirrors a similar scene in episode 3 of Gundam 0080, when Christina Mackenzie ran a simulation on the RX-78NT-1 Gundam NT-1.
  • Challia Bull said "The Witch's nickname isn't just for show", mirroring Amuro's "This Nu Gundam isn't just for show".
  • The FATMAV team pilot Zaku II, one with a blue shoulder and one with a red shoulder evoking the Red Wolf Squadron from Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance which itself was a nod to the elite Red Shoulders Battalion from the Armored Trooper VOTOMS franchise.

Callbacks to GAINAX/Khara titles[]

  • Challia's quarters aboard the Sodon is designed exactly the same as that of Misato Katsuragi aboard the AAA Wunder in the Rebuild of Evangelion film series.
  • Shiiko Sugai'a hairstyle, trenchcoat, and red scarf are a nod to Ruriko Midorikawa from the 2023 film Shin Kamen Rider, which was written and directed by Hideaki Anno and co-produced by Studio Khara.
  • The cemetery setting in the flashback scene where Shiiko visits her first Mav's grave greatly resembles the scene where Shinji and Gendo visit Yui's grave in episode 15 of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
