Texas Colony is a space colony featured in the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin manga and its OVA adaptation.
History[]
Located in Side 5, Loum, Texas Colony originally began construction as an American frontier theme park during an economic bubble, when the bubble burst, its construction was halted, and it laid abandoned until it was purchased by Shu Yashima, who restarted its construction.[2][3]
Despite no longer being a theme park, the colony maintained its unique "wild west" lifestyle, which proved to be popular among many new emigrants. Residents of the colony wore cowboy-style clothing, raised horses, built log houses, and put up carved wooden signs.[4]
In U.C. 0071, Teabolo Mass and his adopted children, Édouard Mass (Casval Rem Deikun) and Sayla Mass (Artesia Som Deikun), moved to Texas Colony after an attempt on their lives by assassins sent by Kycilia Zabi. Teabolo did so at the suggestion of Shu, who told him that since Side 5 was the closest Side to the Autonomous Republic of Zeon in Side 3, the home territory of the Zabi family, moving there would be a sign of submission, showing that he no longer wished for any conflicts with the Zabi family.[2][3]
Initially, life in the Texas Colony was peaceful. The three lived under the care of the colony's manager Roger Aznable and his wife Michele Aznable, and both Édouard and Sayla became friends with their son, Char Aznable, who looked almost identical to Édouard. However, this peace was not to last: Édouard and Sayla soon learned that their mother, Astraia Tor Deikun, has passed away from illness in Side 3.[3][5] Meanwhile, Édouard realized that they were still being watched by spies from Kycilia. In the meantime, Char Aznable was accepted into Zeon's military school, much to the displeasure of his father.[3][6]
Sensing an opportunity, Édouard decided to go to Zeon with Char, lying to Teabolo that he was going to Loum instead.[3][6] After Kycilia learned that Casval was leaving Texas, she ordered her agents to kill him. However, at the spaceport, Édouard switched places with Char and stole his acceptance letter. As a result, Char was killed when Kycilia's agents detonated his shuttle, while Édouard attended the Zeon military academy under the identity of Char Aznable.[7][8]
in U.C. 0079, Side 3 named itself the Principality of Zeon and declared war on the Earth Federation. After Operation British, violent clashes erupted in Loum between pro-Federation and pro-Zeon citizens, with the government brutally cracking down on the latter. Fearing for their safety, Roger and Michele decided to move to Zeon. On the night of their departure, pro-Federation rioters from Miranda, the capital of Loum entered Texas. Claiming that residents of the colony are all Zeon sympathizers, they set fire to the Texas Village and chased many of the villagers to the hotel where Sayla and Teabolo lived. Sayla organized the hotel staff and escaped villagers to barricade the house and fight off the rioters.[9][10]
Thanks to Sayla's leadership, the hotel staff and villagers fought off the first wave of attacks. Unfortunately, because of the commotion, Teabolo died of a heart attack. At that point, the bay area of Miranda was destroyed by a red mobile suit. Seeing that they can no longer return, the rioters lost their will to fight. Unfortunately, Roger and Michele's shuttle were caught in the blast, killing them both. The red mobile suit, piloted by none other than Char, briefly landed on the Texas Colony's outer wall before flying off. Sayla caught a glimpse of the mobile suit and, recognizing it as his brother's mobile suit, futilely tried to chase after it.[11][10]
