Technology & Combat Characteristics
The Takemikazuchi was a trimaran naval vessel and the flagship of an Orb Union expeditionary fleet. It was built following the change in Orb's national defense strategy, shifting from an emphasis on security on the mainland and coastal areas to proactive defense by strengthening the pressure that can be exerted in the open sea. It is lightly armed with several 25mm anti-air gatling guns and anti-air missile launchers to intercept incoming missiles and enemy units that bypassed its escorts' defensive screen. Since it is a large aircraft carrier, it can carry a large number of MS on its two-level deck, with the upper deck being an angled flight deck, and is fitted with six linear catapults.
In late CE 73, Captain Todaka of the 2nd Defense Fleet was assigned to command the Takemikazuchi, which also served as the flagship of a fleet under Yuna Roma Seiran's command. This Orb fleet joined forces with an Earth Alliance fleet led by Neo Roanoke aboard the John Paul Jones for a joint operation against the ZAFT battleship Minerva. The Takemikazuchi was sunk in the second battle with the Minerva off the coast of Crete when ZGMF-X56S/β Sword Impulse Gundam attacked the ship directly using its large anti-ship swords. Captain Todaka went down with the ship when its bridge was destroyed.
The Takemikazuchi is named for a deity from Japanese mythology.
