Sydney was a city located along the southeastern coast of Australia. Prior to the One Year War, Sydney was the largest city in Australia, with a population of around 10 million. Although not its intended target, the city and the surrounding area were completely obliterated during Operation British. Trying to put a quick end to the war, the Principality of Zeon attempted to crash a depopulated colony into Earth Federation headquarters in Jaburo.
However, the heavily-damaged colony fell short of its intended target, instead shattering into large fragments due to the heat of re-entry over the Indian Ocean. The largest piece, comprising most of the main colony-cylinder itself after being shot at while over the Arabian Peninsula, fell directly onto Sydney. The strike caused a 60,000-megaton blast that completely vaporized the city and all of its citizens. Today, all that remains of Sydney is a 500-kilometer (310 mi) crater along Australia's coastline named the "Sydney Crater." Over time, water began to fill the crater, creating a new body of water later called Gulf of Sydney.
During the Third Neo Zeon war, in UC 0096, the destruction of Sydney was one of the events witnessed by Banagher Links and Full Frontal as they time travel through space using the Neo Zeong's psycho shard.
In Gundam Narrative, Rita had a precognition that the destruction of Sydney will happened as due the occurrence of Operation British and its failure, leading to outcome that the falling colony will hit Sydney.
Trivia[]
- Though Sydney's destruction is considered indisputably canon, it was not until Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory that it was first established as the city destroyed in the colony-drop of the first series. This in itself is reflected in Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, where Bernie claims he is from Sydney to a Federation soldier; as opposed to the soldier realizing Bernie was lying due to Sydney no longer existing, he caught onto Bernie when the latter mistakenly claimed it was winter there now (in reality, December is one of Australia's summer months).
