The Solar System (aka Solar Flare System)[1] was a superweapon constructed and used by the Earth Federation Forces near the end of the One Year War.[2]

Technical Information[]

The Solar System was an anti-asteroid fortress weapon developed by the Earth Federation Forces following the Antarctic Treaty, which banned the use of nuclear weapons. Its principal was simple: reflecting concentrated sunlight onto a target using a massive array of mirrors.[1][3] Essentially, it was a gigantic solar furnace.[4] The Solar System consisted of more than four million individually adjustable mirrors, computer-coordinated to form an immense lens tens of kilometers across.[1][3] Each mirror was 20m x 10m in size and could be maneuvered using gas jet verniers.[3]

Due to the large number of mirrors, it was extremely difficult to quickly deploy and control them under Minovsky particle interference.[3] In fact, the computer of Vice Admiral Tianem's flagship, Titan, nearly crashed when controlling the Solar System.[2] The resulting beam was extremely powerful, with the temperature at the focal point approaching the surface temperature of the sun. In addition, once the mirrors have been deployed, the attack could continue indefinitely. However, the mirrors themselves were defeneseless and extremely fragile.[2]

History[]

On December 24, U.C. 0079, the Earth Federation Forces launched Operation Cemballo, an attack on the Principality of Zeon's space fortress Solomon. At 1835 hours, the Federation's 2nd Combined Fleet, or Tianem Fleet, began deploying the Solar System in the ruins of Side 1 while the 3rd Fleet led by Captain Wakkein attacked Solomon to buy time for the Solar System's deployment.[2]

At 1850 hours, Solomon discovered the 2nd Combined Fleet. Vice Admiral Dozle Zabi quickly ordered a wave of satellite missiles to be launched at the fleet and deployed a strike fleet led by the Gwazine-class battleship Gwaran to engage it. However, this proved too late, as the Solar System had finished deploying.[2][5]

The Solar System was fired at Solomon's 6th Space Gate, on its right flank, evaporating the approaching satellite missiles in the process. A blinding flash erupted on Solomon's surface, and after 40 seconds of irradiation, the 6th Space Gate was completely destroyed. Because of this attack, the Federation's mobile suits and RB-79 Balls were able to breach Zeon defenses and enter the fortress itself.[2][5]

With more than three quarters of Solomon's vessels neutralized by the Solar System and the Federation's mobile suits, Dozle ordered his remaining fleet to charge through the enemy line and escape. Meanwhile, the Solar System had taken moderate damage from the detonation of the satellite missiles. Still, Tianem ordered it to be fired at the escaping fleet, further devastating it. This would be the last time the Solar System was fired during this battle, as Tianem's flagship Titan, from which the Solar System was controlled, was soon destroyed by Dozle in the MA-08 Big Zam.[2][6]

Prior to the Battle of A Baoa Qu, the transport carrying the Solar System was destroyed by the Solar Ray, preventing its use during the battle.[7] A more advanced model, the Solar System II, was constructed after the end of the war and saw use during Operation Stardust.
