Sleggar Law (スレッガー・ロウ, Sureggā Rōu?) is a fictional character in the Mobile Suit Gundam anime series and the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin manga.

History

One Year War

Slegger was a late addition to the series, being assigned to White Base as it was departing from Jaburo. He was an ace pilot and brilliant gunner, frequently spending his time operating either the G-Fighter or White Base's main cannon. He had a strong, cheerful, flirtatious and brutally honest personality. He repeatedly hit on the female crew members such as Mirai and Sayla, but also tried to defend Mirai from what he thought as mistreatment from her fiance Cameron Bloom.

He had a brief romance with White Base navigator Mirai Yashima which started during the battle of Solomon. Sleggar felt that Mirai was too wonderful and deserved better than someone like him, so he rejected further advancement. He gave her a ring that belonged to his mother before he headed out to battle. During the subsequent battle, Sleggar battled the Big Zam mobile armor along with Amuro and was killed when the cockpit to the G-Fighter was shattered.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin

In Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's Gundam the Origin, Slegger first appears during Char Aznable's invasion of the Federation's Jaburo HQ. In this adaptation, Law pilots a customized GM unit.

Mobile Suit Gundam Gihren's Ambition

In the strategy game "Gihren's Greed", if Sleggar survives the One Year War, he will resurface in the second half of the game as a member of the AEUG alongside his former White Base compatriots, wearing a Zeta Gundam era pilot suit in blue (his personal color) and yet in conversing with some of his teammates (e.g. Amuro, Sayla) he is considered to not have changed much from his carefree personality seven years ago.

Trivia

• Mobile Suit Gundam writer and director Yoshiyuki Tomino imagined Sleggar as being similar in appearance to the lead actor of "Rocky" (Sylvester Stallone). Character designer Yoshikazu Yasuhiko expressed considerable difficulty in designing Sleggar to his specifications because, at the time, he had not seen the movie.
• Noburo Ishiguro, director of the anime series Superdimensional Fortress Macross said in an interview with the magazine Gundam ACE that the character Roy Fokker was like a son of Sleggar Law. In fact they both have striking similarities, but Focker has a much more transcendence and protagonism in Macross. Ishiguro said that he really liked the character of Sleggar, so he wanted to have someone like him in Macross, but also with a more significant participation in the series.
• If one puts Sleggar's name into an anagram generator, it amusingly converts "SLEGGAR LAW" into "ALL SWAGGER", an appropriate description of his introductory personality.
