The Slave Wraith, or Wraith for short, was an Earth Federation Forces special forces unit active during the One Year War. Officially, it was the 20th Mechanized Composite Batallion, one of the Federation's many experimental mobile suit units. In truth, however, it was a private army that answered directly to the mysterious Federation Forces official Grave, created to carry out illicit missions.
History[]
Members of the Slave Wraith were all criminals who were imprisoned or sentenced to death, but possessed exceptional abilities in certain fields. Grave, a high-ranking Federation Forces official from the Revil faction, offered to erase their criminal records in exchange for joining the Wraith. It had a total of five members:
- Travis Kirkland, nicknamed "Fixer", the team leader
- Fred Reber, nicknamed "Ripper", MS close-quarters combat specialist
- Marvin Herriot, nicknamed "Bomber", sniping and explosives expert
- Edward Lee, nicknamed "Hire", vehicle specialist
- Doris Brand, nicknamed "Diver", expert hacker and intelligence specialist
Under the cover of being just another experimental unit, the Wraith were tasked with undertaking various top secret assignments, including missions against other Federation Forces units. The team were based on a modified C-88 Medea with bomber capabilities, and were initially equipped with three RGM-79[G] GM Ground Type.
Missing Link[]
At some point after the death of Garma Zabi, the Slave Wraith were deployed to a buffer zone with an extremely high attrition rate in the North American frontline to reinforce a besieged Federation base. After destroying the Zakus attacking the base, however, the base commander ordered his Type 61 Tanks to surround the Wraith. Growing impatient, Ripper destroyed one of the tanks, much to the base commander's shock. At this point, Fixer revealed that they knew the commander has been colluding with Zeon and sending his own men to their deaths in exchange for money. The commander realized, to his shock, that the Wraith were the rumored "secret internal discipline unit".
After the Wraith destroyed the tanks and additional Zakus hiding in the base, the commander surrendered, saying he would explain himself in front of the military court. Diver remarked that he still did not understand the seriousness of the problem while Fixer fired at the base command center, killing the commander. After the Medea bombed the rest of the base to cover up any evidence, the Wraith discuss how the replacement base commander would be one of Grave's loyalists, causing his influence to grow. However, all except Hire were unconcerned with this.
The Wraith's next mission was to clear out a group of Zeon mobile suits that had been ambushing Medea convoys in the North American mountains. For this mission, Fixer was given a new mobile suit: the RX-79[G]SW Slave Wraith, which had been procured by Diver through falsified orders. During the mission, the Wraith discuss rumors that the incoming Medea convoy was led by a beautiful lady, and that the supplies were being delivered to the White Base. After wiping out the Zeon mobile suits, the Medea convoy passed unharmed. Diver mentioned that the supply mission was rumored to have been ordered by Revil himself. Bomber mentioned that the base commander they killed before was famously anti-Revil. Ripper was surprised that Grave was a member of the Revil faction, since he thought that Revil was a good person. Diver commented that Revil himself was most likely unaware of Grave's actions, including the fact that he was eliminating his enemies for him.
As Odessa Day approaches, the Slave Wraith was also ordered to help prepare for the main offensive. On the surface, they were to attack Zeon positions and cause a diversion. In secret, Grave ordered them to lure Zeon forces to attack an EFF unit in the rear in order to eliminate the leader of that unit. Ripper wondered why a mere team leader would warrant the attention of Grave, to which Diver replied that the team leader was not only innocent, but also a war hero admired by his subordinates. However, he was from a military family famous for its anti-Revil stance, and since he was untouchable otherwise, Grave had to resort to such underhanded tactics.
The plan seemed successful at first. However, the Federation unit was well-trained and had high morale, and quickly destroyed the pursuing Zeon mobile suits. Left with no choice, Fixer asked Bomber to snipe the unit leader using a Magella Top cannon. Bomber complied, instantly killing the team leader. Since he was killed by a Zeon weapon, it appeared that he was killed in action with Zeon forces, completing the Wraith's mission.
