The Skirmish towards Earth is a conflict of the First Alliance-PLANT War, featured in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
Prelude[]
After having avoided destruction again during the Battle near Junius Seven, the Archangel was finally within range of Earth and planned to rendezvous with the Earth Alliance’s 8th Space Fleet. Knowing that there was a small window of opportunity to attack and possibly destroy the ship before it reached the fleet, Yzak Joule, Dearka Elsman and Nicol Amalfi planned to use their Gundams and the Laurasia-class vessel Gamow to assault the Archangel.[1]
The Battle[]
The Duel, Buster and Blitz gundams launched with the Gamow following right behind them. Once detected, the Archangel launched both Mu La Flaga's Moebius Zero and Kira Yamato's Aile Strike Gundam. Upon nearing the ship, the Gamow opened fire, and having analyzed the Archangel’s evasion algorithm, was able to partially hit the ship in its first shot. Mu quickly moved in to engage Dearka's Buster, but found it difficult as his Wired Gunbarrel’s projectile weapons were ineffective against the Buster’s Phase Shift Armor. Meanwhile, the Duel occupied the Aile Strike, allowing the Blitz to attack the Archangel.[1]
The Blitz's strategy was to assault the ship from a short distance, while avoid its weapons by using its Mirage Colloid Stealth System. However, the Archangel deployed Anti-Beam Depth Charges to block its beam attacks, and used the position of the Blitz’s beam shots to estimate its location and fired Anti-Air Shrapnel Warheads, forcing the Blitz to deactivate its stealth system and re-engage its Phase-Shift armor to avoid destruction. After reactivating its stealth system, the Archangel fired all of its Multi-Barrel CIWS to create a barrel, holding off the Blitz from further attack.[1]
Elsewhere, the Aile Strike and Duel engaged each other in close-combat, while Dearka successfully destroyed two of the Moebius Zero’s gunbarrels by firing the Buster’s missile pods. As the Gamow moved in closer to the Archangel, its beam cannons scored several hits, causing the ship’s Laminated Armor to overheat and begin to lose integrity. Distracted by the Gamow, the Blitz was able to land next to the Archangel’s bridge tower and began attacking it. Unable to counter the Blitz, the Archangel called the Aile Strike back.[1]
Seeing the ship in danger, Kira activated his SEED Mode for the first time, and quickly avoided an incoming attack by the Duel, followed by slicing into the Duel’s side with its beam. While heading back to the ship, the Aile Strike successfully avoided all of the Duel’s beam rifle shots, before knocking the Blitz off of the Archangel. When the Duel tried to attack the Aile Atrike from behind, Kira quickly took one of the Strike’s "Armor Schneider" combat knives and impaled it into the Duel’s damaged side, causing its cockpit console to explode and injuring Yzak in the process. With Yzak hurt and their allotted time nearing its limit, the ZAFT forces retreated.[1]
Aftermath[]
Immediately after the battle, the Earth Alliance’s 8th Space Fleet arrived[1], and its commander, Rear Admiral Duane Halberton, met with the Archangel’s officers to discuss the events during and following the Battle of Heliopolis. The 8th Fleet escorted the Archangel to Earth’s upper orbit, where it received orders to descend to Earth Alliance Headquarters, JOSH-A.[2] However, before it could ascend, ZAFT attacked again, with Commander Rau Le Creuset leading a task force to engage the 8th Fleet in the Battle of Orbit.[3]
During the interim, the Heliopolis civilians who worked on the Archangel were given permission to leave the ship’s service. However, due to various circumstances, each decided to formally enlist in the OMNI Enforcer, including Kira Yamato, who became the Strike Gundam’s official pilot.[3]
