The Skirmish near Artemis is a conflict of the First Alliance-PLANT War, featured in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.

Prelude[]

Following the Battle of Heliopolis, the Archangel found itself pursued by the Le Creuset Team, intent on capturing or sinking the "legged ship" and the last remaining G-Weapon they carried, the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam. With the Archangel running with a skeleton crew and carrying mostly civilians, the decision was made to head for the asteroid fortress Artemis in order to obtain their help. However, as they got close, the Nazca-class battleship Vesalius was able to catch up and ambush the Archangel, launching not ZGMF-1017 GINNs, but the very G-Weapons they earlier stole from Heliopolis.[1]

The Battle[]

As Mu La Flaga piloted his TS-MA2mod.00 Moebius Zero through the debris field to ambush the Vesalius, Kira Yamato launched in the GAT-X105+AQM/E-X01 Aile Strike Gundam, and encountered Athrun Zala in his GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam. The GAT-X102 Duel Gundam, the GAT-X103 Buster Gundam and GAT-X207 Blitz Gundam, piloted by Yzak Joule, Dearka Elsman and Nicol Amalfi, closed in on the Archangel from behind before spreading out, forced the Archangel into the defensive. As the two former friends confronted each other, each questioning the other as to why they're on opposite sides, their questioning was interrupted by Yzak, who decided to help Athrun in destroying the Strike.[2]

The Blitz and the Buster continued to press the Archangel, forcing them to deploy anti-beam depth charges to nullify their beam weaponry. One shot from the Buster got through and hit the ship, but its laminated armor dissipated the shot, leaving no damage. As Kira moved to finally attack the Duel, Nicol attempted to attack the Archangel from below. Captain Murrue Ramius, learning this, and ordered the Archangel to list sideways, allowing them to protect its bottom and fight off the two Mobile Suits. From the Vesalius, Rau Le Creuset noticed that his old rival seemingly hadn't launched, with Captain Fredrik Ades chiding Rau for stating the obvious.[2]

As Kira continued to fight Yzak, his beam rifle shots continued to miss, rapidly draining his suit's battery. Athrun watched the duel, uncertain in wanting to join in or not as Dearka would soon after. As the Archangel got closer to the Vesalius, Rau gave the order to aim the main cannons. Ades warned that doing so would be dangerous as their suits were in the line of fire, though Rau reassured that they would not get hit. As Mu finally gained contact with the Vesalius, the Archangel found itself in the crosshairs of the Vesalius, unable to escape. Before it could fire, Rau sensed Mu's presence and ordered the ship to evade. However, despite this, Mu's Moebius ZERO was able to land a crippling blow to the ship's engines, forcing Rau to order a retreat.[2]

With Mu returning to the Archangel Murrue ordered the ship's "Lohengrin" to be used against the Vesalius. Though the Vesalius evaded the shot, a glancing blow damaged the starboard wing. With that, Murrue ordered the Strike to return and for the ship to head to Artemis. However, Yzak refused to let him get away, leading him and Dearka to press the attack. To Kira's horror, as the Strike's beam rifle refused to fire, he learned he had drained his battery's energy and the Phase Shift Armor powered down, leaving him helpless. Before Yzak could destroy him, Athrun turned the Aegis into its Mobile Armor mode and captured the Strike, preferring that to destroying it and killing his friend. As the Le Cruset Team escaped with the Strike, Mu sent a message to the Archangel, asking for them to prepare the Launcher Striker Pack.[2]

As Athurn explained that he was taking him to the Gamow to force him to join ZAFT with the Strike, Mu and his Mobius ZERO arrived, attacking the Aegis to force it to release the Strike. With the Strike released, Mu ordered Kira to rendezvous with the Archangel and get the Launcher. With its remaining power and Natarle Badgiruel's expert timing, Kira was able to get the Launcher before the Duel could shoot down the Strike. In desperation, Kira fired the Strike's "Agni" Hyper Impulse Cannon, destroying the Duel's right arm and forcing the four mobile suits to retreat.[2]

Aftermath[]

While the Archangel had made it safely to Artemis, they were treated with suspicion for not having an identification code by the base personnel. During the ships brief stay, Artemis' commander, General Gerard Garcia, sought to use the technology of the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam as a means to further his position in the Earth Alliance, to no avail.[3]

After the battle, the damaged Vesalius was ordered to return to the PLANTs to testify in regards to the events that took place during the Battle of Heliopolis.[2] However, Le Creuset had the Gamow remain with Artemis' territory to continue pursuing the Archangel, leaving with it the Duel, Buster and Blitz Gundams.[3]
