The Skirmish at Lodonia Lab is a conflict of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, featured in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.
Prelude[]
Following the Battle of Dardanelles, the damaged LHM-BB01 Minerva returned to the allied Port Turkios for repairs. Whilst awaiting completion, ZAFT's local intelligence reported an unidentified abandoned facility nearby and asked for the Minerva to investigate, which was furthering to one of the Minerva's pilots, Rey Za Burrel. Captain Talia Gladys sent both Rey and fellow pilot, Shinn Asuka to investigate the facility. Before Shinn and Rey could make any headway, however, Rey suffered a seizure, resulting in the Minerva arriving with a biohazard team and a bomb squad to clean the area of any explosive or potential viruses. Shinn and Rey's return to the Minerva, however, which had luckily saved them from hidden bombs planted in the facility, which were disposed of by the Minerva's crew.[1]
The investigation was safely continuing on with Shinn now accompanied by FAITH member, Athrun Zala, Gladys, and the Minerva's second-in-command, Arthur Trine. The group made the horrid discovery that the facility was a special training facility for the Earth Alliance's Biological CPUs with several children kept in stasis inside test tubes, as well as the corpses of both the facility's personnel and remaining children before it was abandoned.[2]
At the same time, a Phantom Pain spy returned to Captain Neo Roanoke, who was still organizing his forces after Dardanelles. By chance, Stella Loussier, a Biological CPU pilot, overhead the conversation and informed her fellow pilots, Sting Oakley and Auel Neider, the latter having a mental breakdown when he realized that his "mother" was left behind at Lodonia. Seeing Auel's fear, Stella jumped into her ZGMF-X88S Gaia Gundam and blew her way out of its hangar to deal with the ZAFT forces investigating. While the Alliance forces in the Suez base were informed, they were ultimately unable to stop ZAFT's investigation.
Meanwhile, the investigation team returned from the lab and forwarded a full report to PLANT Chairman Gilbert Durandal of their findings.
The Battle[]
Upon entering the area, the Gaia was quickly identified by ZAFT's radar, and Athrun's ZGMF-X23S Saviour Gundam and Shinn's ZGMF-X56S/α Force Impulse Gundam were deployed to protect the facility. As Athrun feared the Gaia to have special equipment to destroy the facility as a last resort, he and Shinn fought to carefully disable the Gaia without blowing it up. After the Gaia leaped and clashed with the Impulse in the air, Athrun quickly took the opportunity to slice and knock the unit's beam rifle away before it could fully reach him. Eventually, the pair successfully cornered the Gaia, with Athrun knocked away Gaia's shield before Shinn finally downed the unit by slashing open its cockpit. Shinn was particularly surprised that the enemy pilot was Stella, whom he had met at Diocuia, and immediately rushed her to the Minerva's sick bay against military protocol.[2]
Aftermath[]
Despite Shinn's unprofessional behavior, the facility was successfully protected as the report eventually made its way to ZAFT HQ. At the same time, a medical examination made of Stella during her time in the Minerva revealed her to be one of the surviving Biological CPUs with several unnatural drugs and minerals being found in her body. As the Minerva did not have the special technology used to keep the Biological CPUs alive or in check, Stella became violent and begin dying shortly after her capture. Fearing that she would either die or be turned into a lab rat for ZAFT, Shinn eventually defied military law again and went AWOL, privately contacting the Earth Alliance and returning Stella to them.[3]
In contrast, Neo was greatly disturbed by Stella's capture and was forced to remove memories of her from the minds of both Auel and Sting as Phantom Pain was sent to aid Yuna Roma Seiran in attacking the Minerva at Crete while it was moving towards ZAFT's Gibraltar Base.
The information of Lodonia's atrocities would be revealed to the public when Chairman Durandal finally exposed the anti-Coordinator extremist group Logos and began a brigade against the organization's terrorism.[4]
