Shura Serpentine (シュラ・サーペンタイン?) is a character introduced in the animated film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom.
Personality & Character[]
He is very egotistical and narcissistic just like the rest of the Black Knight Squad, believing he is superior to regular humans and coordinators because he is an Accord.
Furthermore, he believes himself to be always the victor, claiming it's the reason for his existence. He respects the strong, believing that Agnes Giebenrath is beautiful because of her strength. He is quick to look down upon his opponents, though also easily provoked.
He believes that the battlefield is a sacred place and is both flustered and disgusted when he reads Athrun Zala's mind during their battle and sees his 'perverted' thoughts.[1]
Skills & Abilities[]
Shura is the most skilled mobile suit pilot even amongst the Black Knight Squad.
He is capable of fighting Kira Yamato and Athrun Zala on equal footing, using his abilities as an Accord to read the mind of his opponent during battle- allowing Shura to effectively anticipate and counter every attack his opponents throw upon him.
He can also communicate with the other Accords telepathically.
Shura’s excels in close quarters/sword fight combat- may it be in mobile suit or in person. Being the best of the Black Knight Squad, he was able to defeat Shinn Asuka in person, and be a formidable opponent to Kira & Athrun alike.[1]
Physical Aspects & Clothing[]
History[]
Shura was created by Aura Maha Khyber at the Mendel Genetics Lab as an Accord in order to usher in a new era of peace and prosperity in accordance with Gilbert Durandal's Destiny Plan. He was raised by Aura and at some point became the Secretary of Defense for Foundation under Aura's leadership as well as one of the Black Knight Squad.
Shura defeats Shinn
In the movie, Shura is first seen in the PLANTs Colony of Aprillius One, meeting with Hari Jaganath, the National Defense Chairman of the ZAFT Forces/PLANTs Supreme Council.[1]
He is with the entire Black Knight Squad and Orphee Lam Tao- part of the welcoming entourage when Compass visits the Kingdom of Foundation. He is also present during Compass’ courtesy call to Queen Aura Maha Khyber at the Kingdom’s Throne Room.[1]
Later that day at the Palace Grounds, Shura engages fellow Black Knight Squad member Liu Shenqiang in a sword fight and beats him, knocking his sword into where Kira Yamato stands (with the other members of Compass) in an attempt to goad him into a sword fight. Though Kira refuses, Shinn Asuka accepts and Shura soon defeats him. He mocks the pair and leaves, though turns back when he hears Agnes Giebenrath and comments about how she is beautiful. After being rejected by Kira, Agnes runs to him and he comforts her.[1]
Shura then takes part in the joint operation with Compass and the Eurasian Federation against Blue Cosmos in his Shi-ve.A Mobile Suit. In accordance with Orphee Lam Tao's scheme, he heads into battle with the other Black Knights. Griffin Arbalest shows Kira an illusion of Michael, the leader of the enemy forces. This causes Kira to chase the illusion across the Eurasian border, which leads Lacus into ordering Kira be shot down. After Foundation uses and NJ Dazzler to cut communication with the command room, Shura uses the opportunity to fight Kira and is able to take down his Rising Freedom Gundam with the help of Agnes. However, he is intercepted by Athrun Zala's ZGMF-MM07 Z'Gok, which fights him to a standstill. As a nuclear explosion is imminent, he invites Agnes to come with him and retreats while carrying her GYAN Strom. After successfully getting away, he watches the resulting explosion, believing his enemies to be dead.[1]
Shura boards the Gullveig with the other Black Knights and watches as the Requiem is fired against the Eurasian Federation capitol city of Moscow, Russia; and as Orphee attempts to blackmail the nations of Earth into accepting the Destiny Plan. He remains at Queen Aura Maha Khyber's side and is entrusted with her safety by Orphee. Later, he informs Orphee of the Millenium's movements, and watches as Maha and Orphee plot against ORB. Just as Requiem was about to fire, Foundation receives a transmission from the Millennium by none other than Kira, to the shock of all present. Orphee turned to Shura, demanding an explanation on how their enemy was still alive, but he was too stunned to respond. Kira then provokes Aura into re-designating Millennium as their new target, but the enemy ship evades Requiem’s beam strike and launched into space.[1]
Shura is left in charge of Artemis alongside Ingrid Tradoll while Orphee left to command the fleet. Suddenly, they detect the Strike Freedom Gundam Type II on approach. Assuming that Kira was piloting the Strike Freedom Type II in a desperate attempt to rescue Lacus Clyne, Shura received permission from Aura to engage with express orders to crush his hopes. Shura then launched in his mobile suit with the express intent to finish off Kira for real. However, in the midst of the battle, he received a telepathic warning from Ingrid that Artemis had been infiltrated, causing him to realize too late that the battle is just a ruse and that he is actually facing Athrun Zala. Athrun provokes him into chasing him for a time but he stops combat and returns to base after seeing a large explosion coming from Artemis.[1]
Shura faces Athrun
He faces the Strike Freedom Gundam Type II once again when it returned to provide fire support for the Kusanagi. Orphee and Ingrid Tradoll also join the battle in their Cal-re.A in order to assist him, and they soon overpower Kira. Their combined assault destroyed many of the Strike Freedom Type II's vital weapons and pushed its energy reserves beyond its limits/capacity- causing its Variable Phase Shift Armor to deactivate as a safety measure.[1]
Shura aimed to deliver the final blow to the Strike Freedom Type II with his mobile suit’s Needle Piercer attack, but it was blocked by Athrun Zala’s Z'Gok. The attack destroyed the Z'Gok, revealing the ∞ Justice Gundam Type II hidden inside, briefly catching Shura by surprise.[1]
As the two foes clash in Close Quarters Combat, Shura became intrigued upon witnessing Lacus dock the MDE262S Proud Defender with the Strike Freedom Type II, creating the ZGMF/A-262PD-P Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam.[1]
After several minutes of trading blows, Shura acknowledged Athrun as a worthy opponent. As they broke off, Shura added that he would soon emerge victorious, declaring that winning was his reason for his existence. He then sensed Athrun seemingly trying to conceal his thoughts only to react with horror upon seeing an image of a nude Cagalli Yula Athha. Infuriated by his opponent having lewd thoughts in the middle of a battle, Shura charged towards him and anticipated Athrun moving to his left. However, just before Shura made his swipe, Athrun instead maneuvered in the opposite direction and shot his Shi-ve.A in the back, blasting off its left arm.[1]
Confused at how Athrun misdirected him, Shura soon realized that Cagalli was remote controlling the Justice in a AMGS-X18P Cavalier Aifrid. Renewing his attack, Shura managed to sever the Justice's right forearm and boasted that he was the superior fighter. Athrun refuted that true strength was the will to live as he entered SEED mode and carved down with his Beam Horn. As the beam cut down into him, Shura expressed his disbelief that he had actually lost, shortly before the Shi-ve.A exploded, killing him.[1]
Relationships[]
Orphee Lam Tao[]
The pair share a mutual respect for each other as the higher ranking members of the Black Knight Squad. Shura faithfully carries out Orphee's orders and the pair work well as a team when they face Kira.
Agnes Giebenrath[]
Shura thinks that Agnes is beautiful because of her strength, and comforts her after Kira rejects her, thus forming a relationship.
Athrun Zala[]
Shura was looking forward to Athurn, believing him to be the only worthy opponent for him after Kira refused his challenge and Shinn lost. He faced him once on Earth but had to withdraw as the nuclear missile approached.
He faced him again but was angered by Athrun's taunting him, then once again retreated after seeing his base exploding. In the third battle, he attempted to read Athrun's mind and was flustered and angered by his perverted thoughts.
He ultimately lost to Athrun and was surprised that such a thing could even happen, implying that he never actually saw Athrun as his equal even though he held him in higher esteem than the others.
