Shaddiq Zenelli (シャディク・ゼネリ Shadiku Zeneri?), birth name Jeru Ogul (イエル・オグル Ieru Oguru?), is a character in Mobile Suit Gundam the Witch from Mercury. He is an adopted child of the CEO of Grassley Defense Systems, one of the Benerit Group’s three branches. A third-year student in the piloting department who leads Grassley House. [4].

Personality & Character[]

Shaddiq has an affable demeanor, often presenting himself as friendly and carefree to others despite his advanced status. He is very charismatic and often goes out of his way to convince others to join with him and his objectives [6][7][8], avoiding confrontation and force when he can. He works to maintain his affect even through difficult negotiations and when trying to taunt others[9]. He also often jokes around with the others on the Dueling Committee.

However, Shaddiq is secretly very ambitious and ruthless to realize his goals. He maintains many arrangements and networks to accomplish his political objectives, but he is not afraid to cast them off or leave them to die once he no longer sees use for them [10]. Despite that, he still feels attachment to some of his closer collaborators, such as the five female pilots from Grassley House [11].

While maintaining his status as an upcoming executive candidate within the Benerit Group, Shaddiq harbors a deep-seated disgust at the order maintained by the group and the violence it inflicts upon the Earth. He wants to do what he can to put the Earth on more equal footing against space, even if it means instigating conflicts and attacks that endanger others in the short-term [2]. While he is aware his plans would elevate him to greater authority, he still states his desire to attain power for the sake of changing things for the Earthians. Shaddiq remains aware of the consequences of his actions and is ready to take full responsibility for them because he believes that peaceful and non-violent ways to achieve this have exhausted themselves[11].

Despite the varying connections and alliances he has formed over the years, Shaddiq is unable to trust others and takes it upon himself to accomplish many of his goals, even if he does not realize he is distancing others. He is unafraid to betray those who have worked close with him when it suits his convenience. However, he retains strong affection and care for Miorine, believing in her purity and wanting to protect her, but in the end, his manipulative and conspiratorial nature leads to an open confrontation with her instead of any healthy and helpful relationship.[8][9][12].

Skills & Abilities[]

Owing to his years under Sarius, Shaddiq displays a high level of business acumen. Despite still attending school, he frequently attends business-related meetings and events alongside his father and openly discusses the internal politics of the Benerit Group with him.

History[]

Jeru Ogul was taken in by Grassley's Orphanage program, which raised orphans who lost their families to the war partitioning and reeducated them. Jeru was eventually adopted by Sarius himself and became known as Shaddiq Zenelli. While attaining status within Grassley, he recruited several members from Grassley's Orphanages under his alias as the "Prince" to join his faction with the promise of putting the Earth and Space on equal footing[9]. Five of these students became close collaborators and were admitted into the Asticassia School of Technology under Grassley House, although they kept their Earthian affinities hidden[13].

Shaddiq frequently attended company and entrepreneurial events over the years and became acquainted with Miorine Rembran [14]. He once collaborated with her on a project together, although it was shut down after their respective fathers found out [7].

Shaddiq reached out to the Pro-Earthian terrorist group the Dawn of Fold and came to an agreement where they would begin supplying and collaborating with each other, with Nika Nanaura serving as a go-between for the two groups. Shaddiq established a fake company to enable Nika's entry into Asticassia, where she would join the Earth House [15].

A.S. 122[]

Shaddiq officiated the duel between Guel Jeturk and Miorine Rembran as a member of the Dueling Committee. He asked Elan Ceres if he was going to watch the match, but Elan said he was not interested. Guel requested a change in opponent after it was revealed that Miorine was piloting Aerial, which he granted. When Aerial was knocked down and Suletta arrived on the battlefield and engaged Miorine in a fierce argument, Shaddiq shrugged with the other students on the committee but granted Guel's request to change opponents again. Shaddiq smiled as he watched Suletta surprise and overpower Guel with the Aerial's GUND-BITs, tearing apart the Dilanza and winning the duel [16].

After Suletta was detained on suspicion of being a witch, Guel talked with Sabina and Elan about the incident. With Sarius, he attended the inquiry against Prospera Mercury on Aerial's suspected nature as a Gundam [17].

Character Relations[]

Miorine Rembran[]

Shaddiq loved Miorine from an early age, when they were childhood friends and dreamed of changing the world together. Although, by his own admission, he wanted to become a holder in order to protect her and confess his feelings, he chose to remain in the background, not interfering in the duel for her hand, both out of indecisive doubts, and the belief that he could control situation by observing it. At some point, realizing the viciousness of this approach himself, he developed a melancholic obsession with her, thinking about missed opportunities and teasing Guel and Suletta when they owned the status of holder.[8].

Only the events of the anime force him to start any active actions[10], however, his penchant for conspiracies and actions from the shadows only lead to a confrontation with Earth House and Miorine herself, who, following their common former suspicion, begins to suspect him of manipulative attempts to use her[8]. Even if at one point she seems touched by her declaration of love, after a while she angrily tells Suletta that he is just trying to deceive her for his own purposes when Suletta assumes that he is in love with Miorine. In later events, he directly puts her in danger situations, almost openly admitting that he is willing to put her at risk if the situation calls for it, however, he quickly becomes enraged and tries to kill Guel after the fleeting conclusion that he "defiled her", ruining her reputation with events on Earth[9][12].

Thus, while his feelings are sincere and Shaddiq truly cares for Miorine, first his indecisiveness and then his aggressive actions and plot against Gundam Inc ruin his ability to not only truly protect her from danger, but at least fully communicate his feelings. Asking Miorine herself about this at some point, he gets only a bitter, laconic indication that he missed the opportunity to influence their fate[8].
