Serpent Tail is an independent mercenary group introduced in the manga Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Astray.

Overview

Serpent Tail is a small mercenary team led by Gai Murakumo. The group's emblem is based on the motif of a snake with a fanged head and a green body curved like lightning. Unlike ordinary mercenaries, who are willing to do dirty work for a reward, Gai uses moral and political perspectives as a criterion in deciding whether to accept a request, so he does not accept requests that involve intentional "killing" (more than necessary or meaningless killing), "suppression," or other destructive activities.

History

At some point between the Battle of Yggdrasil and July of C.E. 71, Serpent Tail was hired to destroy a privately owned space satellite factory that had been subcontracted by the Alliance to produce parts for simple weapons. This factory was being protected by Elijah Kiel, who was still new to the mercenary business at the time. When Serpent Tail sent out a Mobius to attack the factory, Elijah assumed it would be an easy victory, only to be defeated in a single shot just as he launched from the hanger. Serpent Tail quickly left after destroying the factory part of the satellite. In July of C.E. 71, Gai Murakumo was hired to take down some looters. After accomplishing his mission, he ran into Elijah, who failed his own mission. After listening to his story, Gai recruited Elijah as he saw that the latter fought for someone else, something he considered a quality that real mercenaries should have.

In January of C.E. 71, Gai Murakumo was hired to destroy four ZAFT supply depots by a civilian company, which was unable to use a space route after ZAFT turned it into their supply route. Using a modified GINN, Gai was able to destroy three of the supply depots with no issue. However, at the last supply depot he was intercepted by the Le Creuset Team and engaged the "Magic Bullet of Dusk" Miguel Aiman in his custom GINN. Although his GINN was unsuited for MS combat, Gai was able to accomplish his mission by setting his GINN on a collision course with the supply depot before escaping and hiding in the debris.

Members

Gai Murakumo

Gai is a Combat Coordinator and leader of the mercenary group Serpent Tail. Before coming to Serpent Tail, he escaped from the Earth Alliance, breaking free of his mental conditioning. Although he is a skilled pilot and has no attachment to the machine he uses, he eventually comes to favor the MBF-P03 Gundam Astray Blue Frame as his personal mobile suit, modifying and upgrading it constantly to better suit his needs.

Elijah Kiel

Elijah is a Coordinator and Gai's wingman, he pilots a custom ZGMF-1017 GINN and eventually a ZGMF-1001 ZAKU Phantom, each with a blade-like head crest and a "2" incorporated on its Serpent Tail emblem. Elijah's GINN has great sentimental value to him, so he continues to pilot the GINN even when it becomes greatly outdated: in fact, he switches to his new ZAKU only because his GINN was badly damaged. The LV-ZGMF-X23S Vent Saviour Gundam is his latest MS.

For a period of time, he was with ZAFT: although he is a Coordinator, he does not possess the superior physiology of Coordinator, so his MS maneuvering skills are poor. Through the experiences he gained on the battlefield as a mercenary, however, he polished his maneuvering skills, and has improved his combat skills substantially.

Kazahana Azure

This 6 years old girl is the highly intelligent daughter of Loretta Azure. Because of her background, she possesses adult-like judgement and mental toughness, serving as a liaison to Serpent Tail's clients.

Loretta Azure

Explosives Expert and Tactician, Loretta is the only woman member of Serpent Tail. She is very popular among the mercenaries and is the mother to Kazahana Azure. She is a Natural and a former member of the Earth Alliance.

Reed Weller

The captain of Serpent Tail's Laurasia-class frigate, Reed is a Natural and former Earth Alliance intelligence operative. He still retains contact with the EA and is also a known alcoholic.
