The Second Battle of Jaburo is a conflict featured in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.
Prelude[]
During the Gryps War, A.E.U.G. was confronted by a serious problem - their enemy, the Titans, were based not only at the Side 7 colony of Gryps, but also had allied locations across the Earth's surface. Several A.E.U.G. leaders (Wong Lee notable among them) were of the opinion that a direct attack on the Earth Federation Forces headquarters at Jaburo would be the only way to have a lasting impact on the Titans, as expending resources on attacking Gryps alone would be pointless if the Titans were to simply rebuild the base using their strong support network. Although some individuals such as Quattro Bajeena were not in favor of the plan, A.E.U.G. eventually decided launch an orbital drop attack on Jaburo in an attempt to destroy the Titans' leadership in a single blow. Unbeknownst to A.E.U.G., however, the Titans had been moving their forces from Jaburo at the time.
The Battle[]
A.E.U.G.'s ships approached the upper atmosphere and deployed larger numbers of mobile suits for the orbital drop, including Kamille Bidan's Gundam Mk. II and Quattro Bajeena's Hyaku Shiki. They were disrupted, however, by the arrival of several Titans allied ships deploying their own units, which seriously threatened their operations. In particular, this battle marked the first intervention by Paptimus Scirocco in a direct battle in the Gryps War, who destroyed several units with the fearsome power of his transformable Messala.
Despite the Titans' best efforts, they were unable to stop the orbital drop. Several mobile suits from both armies successfully deployed their ballutes (combination parachute and heat shields) and dropped into the jungle over Jaburo. Although the Titans stationed here responded with a fierce defense, Quattro noted that their resistance seemed far less than expected for the base - a topic he would know well, having been directly involved in the last major assault on the location. When the A.E.U.G. forces finally made their way into the underground facilities of the location that had been so integral to winning the war seven years later, they found them essentially abandoned. It would take freeing the prisoners still remaining on site for the invaders to realize that they had been lured into a trap - for the Titans had buried two nuclear bombs deep into the ground with no way to deactivate them.
What followed was a desperate scrabble to escape impending blast for both Earth Federation Forces and A.E.U.G. Forces alike. When the nuclear weapons went off, Most of the A.E.U.G. forces managed to escape by stealing a Garuda-class carrier plane, and several EFF members were similarly able to escape on the remaining vehicles. However, a great many injured and otherwise unassisted defenders were unable to find transport, and presumably perished in the colossal blasts.
Aftermath[]
The nuclear blast spelled the death knell for an already aging facility. Although Jaburo was not completely obliterated by the blast, the explosions marked the end of its relevance as an Earth Federation base. The Titans had already moved all of their essential operations to various other locations, such as Gryps and their base at Killimanjaro, and so the losses they did sustain in the fight were essentially irrelevant to their greater plans. On the other hand, A.E.U.G.'s realization of the trap meant that they were also able to escape what could have been a disastrous rout with only minor losses. Thanks to the assistance of their allied support group, Karaba, the soldiers that had descended to earth would begin a long quest to escape back to space to continue the fight.
The consequences of Kamille Bidan landing on Earth would go on to have major implications, as it was participating in this battle that would eventually lead him to meet Four Murasame and her Psycho Gundam. This would also directly lead to Amuro Ray meeting Char Aznable once again, when he chose to join Karaba. Thus, while the Second Battle of Jaburo may not have had much of a decisive impact on the outcome of the war directly, the choice to fight it would have massive consequences for the outcome of the Gryps War at large.
