The Second Battle near Orb is a conflict of the First Alliance-PLANT War, featured in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.

Prelude[]

Since reaching Earth, the Archangel was constantly hounded by ZAFT forces. Having only barely escaped an attack from the Zala Team by fighting near the borders of the Orb Union, the team's commander, Athrun Zala, still held heavy doubts about the ship's presence despite Orb's official report claiming that it had already left on its own.[1]

Upon a covert investigation, Athrun accidentally met his childhood friend, and the pilot of the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam, Kira Yamato.[2] Their reunion instantly alerted both to the other's presence, and Athrun remained in the outskirts of Orb while Kira was preemptively ready for ZAFT's impending attack.[3]

The Battle[]

After several weeks of waiting, as Athrun had predicted, the Archangel finally showed itself, and the ZAFT forces launched an ambush as soon as it exited the neutral country's borders. The Zala Team departed with the GAT-X102 Duel Gundam, GAT-X103 Buster Gundam, GAT-X207 Blitz Gundam, GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam atop Guuls, piloted by Yzak Joule, Dearka Elsman, Nicol Amalfi and Athrun Zala respectively. In response, the Archangel launched a smokescreen to conceal itself before sending out both of its FX-550 Skygraspers, piloted by Mu La Flaga and Tolle Koenig. While the ZAFT suits were distracted, Kira, using the Strike's Launcher pack atop the Archangel, fired rapidly at the group. Athrun ordered his team to scatter as a result.[3]

Taking advantage of this, Kira attacked both Dearka and Yzak, damaging both their support flyers and forcing them to make an emergency landing elsewhere before swapping to the Aile Striker pack and engaging both Athrun and Nicol. Acting as Kira's support, Tolle fired missiles that distracted Nicol and the Blitz, allowing Kira to slice off its right arm with a beam saber and hijack its Guul. In the dogfight between the Strike and the Aegis Gundam, both their Guuls were destroyed, but Athrun was able to land on a nearby shoal. Acting quickly, Tolle sent out the Sword Striker pack to Kira, and the Archangel followed up by pelting the isolated Aegis with live rounds, while Kira destroyed its beam rifle with the Sword Strike's beam sword. Having gained the advantage, Kira warned Athrun to cut his losses and withdraw, but Athrun activated his beam sabers and charged forward, and Kira responded by punching the Aegis down before raising his beam sword against it as the Aegis was no longer able to maintain its Phase Shift Armor.[3]

Seeing Athrun in danger, Nicol, having hidden himself with the Blitz's Mirage Colloid, lunged himself at the Strike to save his friend. As a result of the sudden attack, Kira accidentally killed Nicol when the Blitz's cockpit met the Sword Strike's beam sword. (In the original, the attack caused Kira to instinctively swing towards the Blitz's cockpit, but the HD Remaster changed it to him stumbling backward and the Blitz running into it instead).[3] Nicol perished quickly, but not before urging his teammates to escape. As soon as Yzak and Dearka were finally able to regroup with Athrun, they immediately attempted to avenge Nicol, but were rebuffed by the Archangel and the trio were forced to flee.[4]

Aftermath[]

Following the destruction of the Blitz and the death of Nicol, the Zala Team became incensed and redoubled their efforts to take the ship down at the Battle of the Marshall Islands. Meanwhile in the Archangel, most celebrated the Blitz's destruction with the exception of Kira, who was traumatized after overhearing Athrun's grief and anger from the killing of the Blitz's pilot. Nonetheless, the Archangel had managed to remove an obstacle to its journey to JOSH-A.[4]

When the Orb Union learned of the battle near its borders, an investigation team was sent and the Blitz's severed right arm was recovered and would be implanted into, Orb nobleman, Rondo Gina Sahaku's MBF-P01-ReAMATU Gundam Astray Gold Frame Amatsu.
