The Salamis-class (サラミス Saramisu?) was a Earth Federation Forces' light cruiser introduced in the movie Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
The Salamis-class cruiser served as one of the mainstay space warships of the Earth Federation Space Force, built in much greater numbers than its battleship cousin, the Magellan-class. The ship was smaller and built with lighter armor, and was armed with versatility in mind - with an even mix of mega particle guns, missile launchers, dual purpose weaponry, and defensive machine guns allowing it to serve a variety of roles, ranging from patrols to escort duty, to frontal assaults. The cruiser was propelled by a large engine block housing nine powerful thrusters, granting it impressive speed and maneuverability. Despite these advantages, the Salamis-class struggled to keep up with more nimble mobile suits.
Initially, the Salamis-class wasn't designed to carry mobile suits, but later modifications to design and production had them upgraded to suit such role as part of the Vinson Project.[1]
After the war, some are repurposed for "civilian use", and was adopted by various independent groups and colonies for self-defense.
Armaments[]
- Mega Particle Gun
- The Salamis-class mounts five mega particle guns on its hull in single turret mounts, with two fore of the bridge, one on each side of the ship, and one on the ventral hull of the craft.
- Missile Launcher
- The Salamis-class is equipped with eight forward facing missile tubes, with four on each side of the bow.
- Twin Secondary Gun
- The Salamis-class is shown to be armed with thirteen twin secondary guns in domed turrets, with three on each side of the bridge's base at midship, one aft of the bridge, one aft of each sub-bridge on either side of the hull, and four on the ventral hull.
- Twin Machine Gun
- The Salamis-class is armed with a total of fourteen twin machine guns for close ranged defense, smaller in size and caliber than the domed twin secondary guns. Two are mounted on each side of the bridge, two on each side of the bridge's base - behind the twin secondary guns near the side of the hull, and four on each side of the ship's hull - around the sub-bridges.
Special Equipment and Features[]
- Re-entry Shuttle
- The Salamis-class is equipped with a small shuttle on the underside of the ship's hull - between the cooling fins midship. It is used for the transfer of personnel and supplies between ships or stations, and is capable of traveling through the Earth's atmosphere.
History[]
One Year War[]
The Salamis-class cruiser served as the Earth Federation's primary ship of the line for their fleets, serving as the bulk of their numbers, and a primary source of widespread force projection. Despite their flexibilities and cost efficiency for mass production, their weaknesses would be made apparent by the new mobile suits fielded by Zeon during the length of the One Year War. Many Salamis-class vessels would be lost to a wide variety of battles throughout the course of the war, even as the Earth Federation started to field their own mobile suits.
Due to the defeat of the Federation to the Principality of Zeon, the Federation would concede control of the colonies to Zeon, removing its space presence entirely. It is unknown if the Federation fleet was decommissioned, or if they were limited to the Earth and her surrounding space.
