Rolph Ronet (ロルフ・ロネ Rorufu Rone?) is a character of Mobile Suit Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance.[1]
Background[]
An officer of Zeon's Brigade Support Command in Eastern Europe during the One Year War, Maj. Ronet serves as the manager of Zeon's mobile weapon recycling centre located in the vicinity of Mediaș, Sibiu county, central Romania.[3] Under his supervision, the centre's mechanics team led by Tech. Capt. Alfee Zydos collects and dismantles damaged mobile weapons from the frontline and reserves useful parts to keep the already stretched supply lines going. Ronet tries to keep the centre's operation as low key as possible to avoid any attention and attacks by the Earth Federation Forces.[3]
Personality & Character[]
Once a capable commander, Ronet grows tired of the daily grind caused by the protracted conflict between Zeons and EFF, and became an alcoholic who developed an escapist mentality and believed the recycling centre will not be targeted by laying low, hence he was hostile to Iria Solari and her escaping troops as they were viewed as the outsiders who upset the equilibrium and tranquility he created. When the EFF finally came knocking and raided the recycling centre, the inebriated Ronet was overwhelmed and unable to respond realistically, as he yelled at the intruding EFF mobile suits not to shoot and destroy the centre's facilities.[4]
Deep down, Ronet cares for his troops and staff immensely, hoping to bring them back to Space unharmed. It was this belief that keep him going and with the encouragement by Zydos, he finally get sobered and pull himself together to be the capable leader again.[4]
Ronet is by the book who firmly believes in hierarchy as an essential element to operate the military properly. He does not tolerate anyone to act out of his authority which leads to his attempts to arrest Solari and LeSean for piloting refurbished Zakus which were built without his permission and use them to ward off EFF's attacks, even the duo's action saved his and many more lives at the centre. His lack of ingenuity and flexibility is something his superior Maj. Gen. Yuri Kellerne frowns upon.[4]
Skills & Abilities[]
Ronet's ability to manage the recycling centre was effective through not spectacular as he was under the influence of alcohol for a long period of time. Once sobered, he is able to evacuate his troops and lead his convoys effectively to the Odessa space port in time to board the HLVs back to Space.[5] Ronet also has prior experience in using heavy machinery, as he is able to maneuver the centre's crane to move the cannon-equipped Zaku torso and aided Ander Heaton to attack the intruding Gundam EX.[4]
History[]
One Year War[]
European Front[]
Under Maj. Ronet's management, the Zeon's mobile weapon recycling centre in central Romania had been operated quietly and without attracting attention until early November, UC 0079, when an escaping convoy of Zeon soldiers led by Cpt. Iria Solari of Red Wolf Squadron seeking sanctuary at the junkyard-like centre. Seeing the convoy as outsiders who would upset the quiet life of the centre, the Major asked Solari and everyone except the wounded to leave. After intervention and some heated argument with centre's chief mechanic Tech. Cpt Alfee Zydos (Gearhead), Ronet finally allowed Solari's convoy to stay.
Soon afterwards, Ronet came to know the Red Wolves captain's plan of protecting the recycling centre by assembling mobile suits from scrap materials via the help of resident mechanics team. Just when he arrived at the centre's field workshop and was about to reprimand Solari for such ridiculous idea, the EFF mounted a surprised raid at the recycling centre, with Solari and LeSean put the newly-built Zakus in action against the intruding RX-78(G)E Gundam EX and RGM-79 GM. The inebriated Ronet yelled at the EFF mobile suits not to attack the centre and had to be restrained by his aides and Zydos.[4] As much as his dislike of fighting, Ronet assisted Ander Heaton to attack and distract the EFF mobile suits by maneuvering the cannon-equipped Zaku torso with a crane at the workshop.
The combined efforts of the Red Wolf duo and their comrades saw off the enemy but the recycling centre suffered significant loss of lives and infrastructural damage. Shell-shocked and crestfallen, Ronet blamed himself for failing to protect the soldiers and staffs, but Zydos encouraged the disheartened Major not to give up on the hope to bring his troop back to the Zeon homeland in Space. At that moment, Ronet realized this was the goal that he had been striving for all along, and he thanked the Technical Captain for his support as he finally back on his feet again.[4] Sobered, the first thing Ronet did was attempting to arrest the Solari and LeSean as they stepped over the former's authority. The tension was defused by the timely appearance of Maj. Gen. Yuri Kellerne, who delegated Solari with the task of stealing Federal Force's GMs at the Olt Base while ordered the Major to repair and re-arm the Zakus as well as taking care of the centre's mess in the aftermath of EFF's attack.[4]
When Solari and co. failed the GM-jack mission, they were picked up by Ronet who had already organized his remaining troops into convoys and headed to Odessa space port for boarding HLVs backing to Space. As the convoy came under EFF's attack, Solari insisted to stay behind Odessa to protect the convoy and the Major let her join the Midnighters Squadron to ward off EFF's Assault Guntanks and M61A5 MBTs. Through Solari and Midnighters' effort. Ronet's troops were able to boarded the remaining HLVs and launched back to Space safely, but not before they suffered a huge scare as the Major witnessed other HLV was shot down by EFF's Saberfish fighter.[5]
