Rolland Chuan (ロラン・チュアン Roran Chuan?) is a character that appears in the television anime series Mobile Suit Gundam and the one-shot manga prequel Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island -Doan and Rolland-.
History[]
A young girl who lost both of her parents in attacks by Zeon forces during the One Year War. She travels to stay at her uncle's home, near Taipei, and meets an injured Cucuruz Doan on the way, who claims he is an anti-Zeon guerrilla. Helping him and his three children, they arrive in Teipei only to find her uncle had been killed when his apartment was struck by a rocket. With nowhere else to go, and the fighting drawing nearer, they board a refugee ship that is set to sail to territory still held by the Earth Federation. However the ship gets caught up in the battle between the guerrillas and Zeon military, and the children are swept overboard. Doan dives into the ocean to rescue the three children and Rolland launches in a life boat to rescue them. They all make it into the lifeboat but are left adrift at sea, eventually becoming marooned on an uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean.
Rolland lives together with Cucuruz Doan on the island, taking the place of a mother for the three war orphans in Doan's care. She finds Cucuruz Doan's journal on August 27th and learns the truth, that he is a deserter from the Principality of Zeon's army. Knowing that Doan was the cause of the children's orphanhood, she chooses not blame him for it, on the contrary, she tries to understand Doan's suffering. When Amuro Ray arrives on the island, she also comes to have empathy for him, as he has also been traumatized by the war.
