The RX-80RR Red Rider is a prototype mobile suit featured in the manga Mobile Suit Gundam Aggressor.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
The Red Rider is a prototype mobile suit developed for the Pale Rider project. It is an experimental unit intended to collect data for further development of the RX-80PR Pale Rider. However, unlike the Pale Rider, it lacks the Hand Beam Guns and crotch-mounted thruster. Its shoulders and knees are equipped with the Wearable Armor first used by the RGM-79FP GM Striker. The HADES system is absent and instead an experimental system named ARES was installed. The mobile suit's computer is a voice-interactive type, so various actions, including the activation of the ARES system, can be performed via verbal commands.
Armaments[]
- Vulcan Gun
- A pair of shell firing weapons, they have high-rate of fire, but little power. They can damage lightly armored areas such as the sensors and are ideal for shooting down small, lightly armored targets such as missiles, attack vehicles, etc. The Red Rider's vulcan guns have the added ability to rotate up and down.
- Beam Saber
- The beam saber is a small device held in the mobile suit's hands when operated and is powered by a rechargeable energy capacitor. It emits a blade-shaped beam to cut through most armor not treated with anti-beam coating. The Red Rider uses the standard model of beam saber as other Earth Federation Forces' mobile suits, with a one stored on the left side skirt armor. Due to the Red Rider's reduced operating time, its beam saber is not meant to be recharged by the mobile suit's generator.
- HFW-GMG·MG79-90mm Bullpup Machine Gun
- The bullpup machine gun was a system weapon developed as a space/ground dual use projectile weapon. Though compact, it has sufficient anti-MS firepower while maintaining accuracy. Its muzzle velocity is increased due to the use of new gunpowder and this enables it to easily penetrate the armor of Zeon's mobile suit. A box-like sensor system incorporating a video camera and laser sensor is installed at the top, and when this system is used alongside the mobile suit's targeting system, target acquisition capability is enhanced.
- YHI YF-MG100 100mm Machine Gun
- The standard armament for Federation's mobile suit ground forces during the One Year War that was developed by Yashima Heavy Industries. It has an alternate model number: "NF·GMG-Type.37/100mm". Equipped with a box magazine and folding stock, it has excellent rate of fire and is easy to wield. It utilized a smoothbore type barrel that lacked rifling and has to be replaced after firing 3000 rounds. The weapon could utilize three different types of ammunitions: HEAT (High Explosive Anti Tank), APFSDS (Armor-Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding-Sabot), and HESH (High Explosive Squash Head), allowing combat units to select the appropriate type to meet operational needs.
- Prototype 100mm Machine Gun
- Modified YF-MG100 100mm Machine Gun that incorporates Zeon technology. It have heat blades, made out of shape memory polymer compound similar to Gouf's Heat Sword, built into the top and bottom of the muzzle. Both heat blades can also be shot as projectiles.
- Leg Missile Pod
- A rare optional armament deployed by the Earth Federation Forces during the One Year War. The Red Rider mounts a 3-tube missile launcher on each leg. Although they can be purged after use to prevent dead weight, the Red Rider is not affected by the added weight and so they become part of its standard ground-use armaments. They are used for restricting an enemy mobile suit's movements, destruction of ground facilities or battleships, and sweeping ground attacks.
- RGM*S-Sh-WF/S-00109 Shield
- Mounted on the forearm, this small, light shield is commonly used by the Gundam Ground Type and GM Ground Type. Constructed of Luna Titanium alloy, it is designed to primarily protect the cockpit and other critical areas, and as such has a different form than the RGM-M-Sh-003 model. Additionally, it can be used as a close range striking weapon in mobile suit combat. Furthermore, through lodging the spikes at the tip into the ground, the shield can serve as a free standing frontal defense. This also allows the mobile suit to use both hands to hold large caliber weaponry and maintain a stable firing position.
- Zweihänder
- An integrated offensive and defensive armament developed exclusively for the Red Rider. It is a shield with a large high power adjustable beam saber built on the side. It also contains three cooling capsules to reduce heat generation and will become unusable once all these capsules are used up. An anchor is built into the back of the shield which can be detached after use. A grip is also stored in the back of the shield which allows for a longer reach when used as a sword. However, if the shield takes too much damage, the beam saber can malfunction.
Special Equipment & Features[]
- ARES
- The predecessor of the HADES system. An experimental system connected to the computer of the machine, activating this system will release the Red Rider’s limiter and increase its movement performance by 150% for 300 seconds. However, it places a heavy load on the pilot and runs a high risk of killing them. In the event that the heart stops beating, a shock resuscitation program called the "Rymm-Va" is activated.
- Wearable Armor
- A set of add-on armor mounted on both the shoulders, knees, and the cockpit hatch. It protects the suit as it charges towards the enemy and can be purged when not required. The wearable armor functions like reactive armor, it has internally-mounted explosive that would explode when hit to diffuse the impact of enemy's projectiles outwards.
- Booster Pack (Bst)
- A special set of external fuel tanks and thrusters to give the unit higher speed and better maneuverability in space. Same equipment that was later installed onto Pale Rider.

- The Red Rider's red scheme and Zweihänder are references to the Biblical Red Rider, who rides on a red horse and possesses great sword.
