The RX-78-Z1 Zeon's Gundam is a mobile suit that first appears in the game Gihren's Greed. It is also appears in the Mobile Suit Gundam: Gihren's Ambition Special video game.
Technology & Combat Characteristics
In the game Gihren's Greed, one of the parallel timelines of the Universal Century where Zeon forces won the One Year War, Zeon's Gundam was constructed from the design plans of the RX-78-2 Gundam taken from the Earth Federation (Although it is unclear how these designs were obtained, GAMES-MSV suggests that they were found in Jaburo's factories). Although identical in appearance to the RX-78-2 (except for its green Zeon paint scheme and an MS-14A Gelgoog's shield in place of the RX-M-SH-008/S-01025 Shield), its interior mechanisms were completely revamped and featured parts derived from Zeon technology. Armaments
- 60mm Vulcan Gun
- Mounted in the head, these shell firing weapons have a high-rate of fire but have little power and can't damage the thick armor of a mobile suit, though it can damage lightly armored areas such as the sensors. The weapons are ideal for shooting down small, fast moving, lightly armored targets such as missiles, small land vehicles, and attack helicopters.
- Beam Saber
- The beam saber is a small cylindrical device held in the mobile suit's hands when operated and is powered by an energy capacitor that is recharged from special racks. The beam saber is capable of cutting through any metal that has not been treated with anti-beam coating. The RX-78-Z1 is equipped with two beam sabers, that when not in use are stored in the backpack.
- Beam Rifle
- A revolutionary weapon for it's time, the beam rifle is the primary weapon used by the RX-78-Z1. Making use of E-cap (or "energy capacitor") technology, the rifle uses charged concentrations of Minovsky particles as ammunition. This gives the beam rifle firepower equivalent to that of a battleship's beam cannons. As the Minovsky particles destroy matter on a molecular scale, the beam rifle can penetrate even the thickest armor and destroy its target with a single shot. One weak point of the rifle was its energy limits.
- Shield
- A basic optional arm-mounted defense armament for many mobile suits. The shield is a thick sheet of armor designed to take severe punishment that would normally destroy a mobile suit. Since the introduction of beam weaponry, shields have been treated with an anti-beam coating allowing it to withstand several beam shots before the coating wears off. Typically physical shields can only take so much damage before they succumb to the pressure and break. The RX-78-Z1 equips the same shield as the MS-14A Gelgoog, which is styled after the shields used by the African Zulu tribe.
History
In Federation vs. Zeon video game
During the last weeks of the One Year War, the focus of the war effort shifted to outer space. Despite this, many Zeon soldiers and mobile suit units continued to operate on Earth. One such Zeon mobile suit team was successful in their ambush of a Medea supply unit and their capture of an RX-78-2 Gundam unit. The captured unit was re-designated RX-78-Z1, repainted in the standard Green Zeon colors and was subsequently used against the Federation a number of times to great effect. For some time, the Gundam wreaked havoc amongst Earth Federation forces on Earth until a Federation Special Forces Combat Unit was able to intercept the stolen Gundam in New Yark and destroy it. Despite the victory for the Federation unit, the stolen Gundam shot down nearly two dozen RGM-79(G) GM Ground Type and RX-79(G) Gundam Ground Type units before it was destroyed.
In GAMES MSV
Zeon's Gundam is a fictional mobile suit appearing in the movie "Overlord of the Azure Planet". (Named after the real-life Gihren's Greed game it appeared in) In the movie, Jaburo was occupied by Zeon forces toward the end of the One Year War, and Zeon engineers managed to create their own Gundam using data found in Jaburo's factories. This mobile suit is the greatest threat in the movie.
