Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
The 01 Gundam is the first prototype of the RX-78 Gundam series, a highly versatile Mobile Suit (MS) created by the Earth Federation Forces as part of their RX Project.[2][3] The unit was painted in a black-and-white color scheme and used a visor-type head unit like the RX-77 series.[2] Designed with an emphasis on close combat and high mobility in mind, it was equipped with a pair of Beam Sabers mounted on its backpack, a Beam Rifle, a Hyper Bazooka, and a Shield.[2] Like the RX-77 it also features the Core Block System that act as escape system in case the mobile suit got destroyed, but still capable of keeping the operational data intact.[2]
Armaments[]
- Beam Saber
- The beam saber is a small device held in the mobile suit's hands when deployed and is powered by a rechargeable energy capacitor. It emits high-energy Minovsky particles to form a blade-shaped I-field (via manipulation of electromagnetic fields), and then fills this I-field shell with superheated Minovsky particle plasma to produce an effective cutting blade. - Beam Rifle
- A hand-carried ranged beam weapon powered by a rechargeable energy cap.
- Hyper Bazooka
- The Hyper Bazooka is a portable, handheld, anti-ship rocket launcher that functions like a recoilless rifle, with gas ejected from the rear of the weapon.
- Shield
- A basic arm-mounted defense armament for many Federation mobile suits. The shield is a thick sheet of armor designed to take severe punishment that would normally destroy a mobile suit, and is also treated with an anti-beam coating to withstand several beam shots before the coating wears off. Typically, physical shields can only take so much damage before they succumb to the pressure and break.

- The RX-78-01 is equipped with various hardpoints, found on its shoulder pauldrons, elbows, and knees, which can be used to mount different types of equipment including weapons and shields.
History[]
In U,C. 0079 the 01 Gundam was deployed alongside a captured MS-06 Zaku to recapture the RX-78-02 White Gundam and the Pegasus stolen by Char Aznable from Side 7. During the ensuing battle, the 01 Gundam managed to temporarily push back the stolen Gundam and attempted to destroy the Pegasus, however its efforts were thwarted by Char, and it was subsequently destroyed due to Char's superior piloting skills.[4]

Notes & Trivia[]
- The 01 Gundam's head design is based off one of the old concept designs of the gMS-Ω GQuuuuuuX, with the 01 Gundam's head being simplified from the initially more elaborate head concept.
- In-universe, the 01 Gundam's head is a modified RX-77-02 Guncannon's head.
