Iria Solari describes what Gundam EX is like to Maj. Gen. Yuri Kellerne.[1]

The RX-78(G)E Gundam EX (ガンダムEX Gandamu EX?) was an Earth Federation mobile suit introduced in the ONA Mobile Suit Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance.[2]

Technology & Combat Characteristics

The Gundam EX was a state-of-the-art ground-use mobile suit developed by the Earth Federation Forces. It was designed to emphasize maneuverability and operating time on the ground for forced reconnaissance and rear disturbance deep into enemy territory. Despite many details of the unit being unknown as all development materials were destroyed in the post-war chaos, the development of Gundam EX was believed to be based around the RX-78 Gundam series.[3]

The Gundam EX was equipped with rear thruster nozzles that had afterburners to enhance its mobility.[3] Due to its focus on forced reconnaissance, its head carried more cameras and sensors compared to other mobile suits, with the light-up patterns on its camera eye sensors changing depending on the combat situation. Its body armor was made of Luna Titanium Alloy,[3] and despite the unit having less armor on the body surface then those of RX-78-2 Gundam and RX-79[G] Gundam Ground Type, its armor was highly durable and immune to most of Zeon's projectile-based MS weaponry, including 120mm Zaku Machine Guns, Long Rifles, 180mm Cannons, and 280mm Zaku Bazookas,[2] plus the ability to withstand petrol-induced chemical explosion.[4] The Gundam EX's main armaments consist of a beam rifle, a beam saber, and a retractable two-pronged shield, which were revolutionary at the time with the rifle delivering devastating firepower against Zeon's mobile suits and infrastructures, and the beam saber and shield being highly effective in close-quarter combats.

Armaments

  • Head-Mounted Autocannon
The Gundam EX had a total of four autocannons installed on its forehead for use in point-defense against incoming ordnance and infantry, a pair on either side of the forehead. These autocannons were also known as "Head-Mounted Vulcans" or "Head-Mounted Machine Cannons."
  • Beam Saber
The Gundam EX's primary close-combat weapon, which emits high-energy Minovsky particles from an E-cap within the handle. These particles are contained in a blade-shaped I-field. The resulting blade of superheated particles can cut through almost any material that isn't treated with an anti-beam coating. The beam saber had a limited energy supply, thus, the Gundam EX carried three of them to allow for extended combat. The beam sabers were stored on a movable rack behind the left shoulder when inactive.
  • Beam Rifle
A long-range beam-based rifle signifying the Gundam EX's technological advancements, as previously, such a weapon could only be utilized on battleships. It had enough power to destroy a mobile suit or melt a building in a single shot. The beam rifle could be stored on Gundam EX's rear skirt hardpoint when inactive
  • Shoulder Gatling Cannon
A rapid-fire rotary autocannon connected to the right end of the backpack canister, which could be slung over the Gundam EX's right shoulder. It was used to suppress enemy mobile suits and destroy highly mobile targets like aircraft. Its ammunition was stored in the aforementioned large drum canister attached to its back, giving it a large ammo capacity. The entire Gatling Cannon assembly could be jettisoned to reduce weight and improve overall mobility.
  • Shield
A large piece of defensive armor that could be equipped on the Gundam EX's left arm to compensate for the unit's reduced armor for mobility. It had 2 prongs on the end that could be used for close-quarters combat if necessary. It was retractable and could be extended vertically to increase its range of protection. The shield was made with highly durable materials to withstand attacks from Zeon's projectile-based weaponry.[4]
  • Rocket Launcher[R]
A large anti-armor projectile-based weapon equipped for RGM-79 GM, the rocket launcher was used to destroy fortified targets. While not normally part of the Gundam EX's arsenal due to its focus on reconnaissance, it could still wield the weapon in certain situations. The rocket launcher featured a retractable barrel and could be stored on the Gundam EX's rear skirt hardpoint when inactive. The conventional weapon was also meant for the right shoulder, as it was seen locking into place onto the Gundam EX's right shoulder segment.

History

Spoiler Warning: Spoiler details may follow.

On November 6, U.C. 0079, the eve of Operation Odessa, the Gundam EX first appeared in combat during a surprise Federation assault to retake the Cluj-Napoca military base in Romania, which had fallen under Zeon control. The Gundam EX's technological superiority allowed it to single-handedly defeat the Red Wolf Squadron's mobile suits, led by Cpt. Iria Solari, who at the time was guarding the base. After a short reprieve, the Gundam EX would chase down a Zeon convoy escaping from the base, destroying a damaged MS-06V Zaku Tank piloted by Red Wolves' 2nd. Lt. Kneeland LeSean, before being intercepted by two MS-07B-3 Gouf Customs arriving to protect the convoy. Both Gouf Customs were quickly dispatched by the Gundam EX, though it ceased its pursuit soon after.[4]

Later, the Gundam EX, accompanied by an RGM-79 GM, would participate in an assault on a recycling plant being used by Zeon forces as a scrapyard for Zaku parts. The Federation mobile suits would engage in combat against the refurbished Zaku II's, piloted by the surviving Red Wolves pilots Solari and LeSean, who volunteered to defend the base. LeSean's Zaku II would inflict sufficient damage to the GM to force it to retreat, forcing the Gundam EX to protect the GM from LeSean's Zaku in pursuit. After recovering the GM's pilot, the Gundam EX would withdraw for the day.[1]

A few days later, the Gundam EX would deploy once again to stop an attempted hijacking of two GMs by a group of Zeon infiltrators at the Federation mobile suit outpost it was based in, where it disables both hijacked GMs. The Gundam EX soon after destroyed LeSean's Zaku II that attempted to assist the Zeon infiltrators.[5]

With the Zeon forces in Eastern Europe in full retreat following Operation Odessa, the Gundam EX would again be deployed to join the attack against the Odessa Spaceport in an attempt to destroy the HLVs carrying escaping Zeon personnel back to Space.[6] The Gundam EX would once more engage Solari's Zaku II in combat, with the Iria Solari attempting to establish dialogue with the Gundam's pilot. Swayed by Solari's words, the Gundam Pilot would shove Solari's Zaku II away from the falling debris of a destroyed HLV, with the Gundam EX taking the brunt of the crash. Weakened by the impact, with armaments like its shield, gatling gun, and beam saber rack being destroyed, the Gundam EX would be caught off guard by a surprise attack from a Gouf Custom, its heat sword penetrating the Gundam EX's torso and ultimately killing the pilot. The Gundam EX's wreckage would be left behind at the Odessa spaceport, its subsequent fate unknown.[6]

Notes & Trivia

  • According to mechanical supervisor Kimitoshi Yamane, the aesthetics of the Gundam EX is meant to evoke the image of a skeleton and bones.[7]
  • The design of the Gundam EX's beam rifle closely resembles to RX-77-2 Guncannon's XBR-M-79a model, rather than the RX-78-2 Gundam's BOWA*XBR-M-79-07G.
