The RX-77[G] Guncannon Ground Type is a limited production version of the RX-77-2 Guncannon specialized for ground combat. It appears in the manga Mobile Suit Gundam Ground Zero Rise From The Ashes.

Technology & Combat Characteristics

Similar to the RX-79[G] Gundam Ground Type, which was created using spare parts for the RX-78, the Guncannon Ground Type was created using spare parts for the RX-77. As with the Gundam Ground Type, the Guncannon Ground Type omitted the Core Block System, and a limiter was placed on it in order to ensure stable performance despite differences in the quality of its parts. The units assigned to the Australian front were modified for combat in subtropical and aquatic environments.[1]

Armaments

  • Vulcan Gun
A basic armament of many Federation mobile suits, a pair are mounted in the Guncannon's head. The Vulcan Guns are mainly for intercepting incoming missiles/rockets, destroying mobile suit sensors, and engaging lightly-armored vehicles.
  • Shoulder Cannon
A pair of low recoil cannons are mounted on the shoulders for mid-range fire support.
  • Spray Missile Launcher
The two shoulder cannons can be replaced by two spray missile launchers. While they do not have the penetration power or the rate of fire of beam weapons, the rockets are not affected by line of sight and any type of anti-beam coating.
  • YHI YF-MG100 100mm Machine Gun
The standard armament for Federation's mobile suit ground forces during the One Year War that was developed by Yashima Heavy Industries. It has an alternate model number: "NF·GMG-Type.37/100mm". Equipped with a box magazine and folding stock, it has an excellent rate of fire and is easy to wield. It utilized a smoothbore type barrel that lacked rifling and has to be replaced after firing 3000 rounds. The weapon could utilize three different types of ammunition: HEAT (High Explosive Anti Tank), APFSDS (Armor-Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding-Sabot), and HESH (High Explosive Squash Head), allowing combat units to select the appropriate type to meet operational needs.
  • Custom Beam Rifle
  • Heat Dagger
A folding combat knife used for melee combat. The blade is heated to high temperatures in order to increase its cutting capacity.
  • "Fire Nut" Grenade
A grenade that engulfs an enemy target in flames upon impact.
  • RGM*S-Sh-WF/S-00109 Shield
The Guncannon can also use the same forearm-mounted shield as the Gundam Ground Type and GM Ground Type. This small, light shield is constructed of Luna Titanium alloy, and is designed to primarily protect the cockpit and other critical areas. Additionally, it can be used as a close range striking weapon in mobile suit combat. Furthermore, through lodging the spikes at the tip into the ground, the shield can serve as a free standing frontal defense.

History

Due to difficulty in maintenance and lack of replacement parts, the Guncannon Ground Type was used as a stopgap measure by the Earth Federation Forces in Australia until the assignment of RGC-80 GM Cannon and RX-77D Guncannon Mass Production Type to the region. Similar units also saw use in the Asian Front during Operation Desert Dragon.[1]

In November, U.C. 0079, Principality of Zeon officer Lt.Visch Donahue was informed by his superior Walter Curtis that Federation reinforcements were heading to the Carnarvon Base in West Australia by air, crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Curtis ordered Donahue's unit to ambush the Federation reinforcements, and also told him that there was information about Federation Forces in Australia receiving a "gift from Jaburo". However, having received words from sympathetic civilians that an unfamiliar mobile suit unit was heading toward Carnarvon via land, Donahue realized that the reinforcement convoy was trap, and decided to use this to his advantage.

On the night of the reinforcements' supposed arrival date, Donahue's unit hid south of the Carnarvon Base. They were attacked by four Guncannon Ground Types, and Donahue's MS-06FS Zaku II was heavily damaged. However, just as the Guncannon Ground Types seemingly had the advantage, they were blinded by a smoke screen and attacked by a MS-07B Gouf bearing Donahue's personal emblem: the Zaku II was merely a decoy piloted by one of his men.

Closing the distance, Donahue quickly disabled one Guncannon Ground Type by electrocuting it with the heat rod and destroyed another by blasting it with the five-barrel machine guns at point blank range. He then electrocuted the third one with the heat rod, but not before it blew off the Gouf's left arm. The final Guncannon Ground Type charged it with heat dagger in hand, but Donahue quickly drew the heat sword from the Gouf's dismembered left arm and cleaved his final opponent in half.[2]
