The 'RGM-86R Nouvel GM III' (RGM-86R ヌーベル・ジムIII Nūberu Jimu Tsri?) is a mass-production mobile suit which first appeared in the photonovel Gundam Sentinel.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

The Nouvel GM III was a further improvement of the RGM-86R GM III, intended to boost performance while maintaining manageable cost for mass production. Its external appearance underwent significant changes, with the most noticeable difference being the chest and head unit.[1] An additional pair of exhaust vents were added to accommodate the heat buildup of the upgraded reactor, and the head was redesigned to fit enhanced sensors and additional ammunition for its head mounted Vulcans. In addition, it was also equipped with extra parts to increase its mobility, such as output enhancement units on the front skirt, joint enhancer units on the knees, and field motor amplifiers on the feet.[2]

Additionally, the Nouvel GM III was capable of using more powerful weapons to boost its firepower and performance, while also being able to be equipped with the same missile weapons of the stock GM III. These enhancements gave the Nouvel GM III significantly improved performance over the regular GM III, to the point that it was described as the true mass production version of the RX-178 Gundam MK-II and on par with the RMS-154 Barzam. These performance improvements gave the suit a much better cost to performance ratio than the older MSA-003 Nemo and it would replace the Nemo as AEUG's standard mobile suit of the line. It would also see service in the ranks of the Earth Federation Forces to a more limited extent.[1]

Armaments[]

  • 60mm Vulcan Gun
The Nouvel GM III mounted a pair of shell-firing armaments built into the head. These guns had offensive power, and were only used to restrict enemy movement and lay down a wall of suppressive fire due to their rapid rate of fire. The Nouvel GM III's head Vulcans have much more ammunition compared to the GM III's due to increased storage space in the head.
  • Beam Saber
The beam saber is a small device held in the mobile suit's hands when deployed and is powered by a rechargeable energy capacitor. It emits high-energy Minovsky particles to form a blade-shaped I-field (via manipulation of electromagnetic fields), and then fills this I-field shell with superheated Minovsky particle plasma to produce an effective cutting blade. The Nouvel GM III has two beam sabers stored in the backpack. It has the same shape as the Gundam Mk-II's, but a standard mass-produced beam generator is used.
  • Beam Rifle
The standard ranged armament of the many mobile suits is the beam rifle. The particle beam fired from a beam rifle can penetrate almost any armor that has not been treated with specific counter-measures. The Nouvel GM III equips the same model used by the Gundam Mk-II.
  • Shield
The Nouvel GM III made use of same shield model as the Gundam Mk-II. It is typically mounted on the left forearm and can be anti-beam coated. It is also capable of mounting additional plates of reactive armor to absorb more damage.
  • Missile Pod
The Nouvel GM III can be outfitted with a missile pod on each shoulder. Each pod has its own sensors for improved accuracy, and carries four medium-sized missiles. This armament is known as the 'Normal Missile Pod'. Once all of their missiles have been fired, the launchers can be jettisoned to reduce weight.
  • Option Missile Pod
An alternate shoulder-mounted missile pod, it is loaded with 15 micro-missiles that are arranged in three rows of five. Once all of their missiles have been fired, the launchers can be jettisoned to reduce weight.
  • Large Missile Launcher
A pair of large missile launchers can be mounted on the Nouvel GM III' side skirts. Each launcher contains two large, high performance missiles that has a special body shape for improved speed and mobility. Once their missiles have been fired, these launchers can be jettisoned to reduce weight. By using other joints and connectors, the large missile launchers can be attached to other body parts.
  • Backpack Missiles
The Nouvel GM III's armament could be expanded further by mounting up to four additional large missiles on its backpack, capable of being fired over the shoulder.

Special Equipment & Features[]

  • External Propellant Tank
To extend the Nouvel GM III's operating range, a large propellant tank could be optionally mounted on the backpack for additional fuel. Once consumed, the tank can be discarded to reduce the mobile suit's weight.

History[]

Soon after the Gryps War came to a close, the Nouvel GM III became the main mobile suit model of the Anti Earth Union Group, taking the place of their old and obsolete Nemo. The suit was also used by Earth Federation Forces [3] alongside the RMS-179 GM II and RGM-86R GM III before being replaced by the RGM-89 Jegan. In U.C.0094, a Nouvel GM III boarded by Hræsvelgr Corps pilot Rex Fabio was deployed for technical tests with the MSN-001X Gundam Delta Kai at Area X of the Mariana Base.[4]

In U.C. 0112, a mercenary group called Gleam Black Guns (GBG) was hired by Oier Raddegger to assist him gathering combat data from F90 Gundam F90 Team B's test mission. The GBG's customized GM IIIs led by a RGM-86R-FA Full Armor GM III act as diversion and manage to wipe out most of Team B's MS Teams while also isolating the F90.[5] Despite mounting a fierce resistance, Team B's MS Teams eventually sustained heavy damage from the GBG units culminating in the loss of several Gustav Karls and Heavyguns, and heavy damage to the F90 Unit 2, resulting in Team B's disbandment. [6]

Variants[]

  • RGM-86R Nouvel GM III (GBG Specifications)
Featured in the manga Mobile Suit Gundam F90: Fastest Formula, these Nouvel GM IIIs operated by the mercenary group called Gleam Black Guns (GBG) were enhanced using RGM-89J Jegan Normal Type internal components.[7] Each unit was painted in pitch black for stealth purposes and to make them hard to spot by MS's camera. This enabling them to achieve comparable performance with current EFF MS, especially miniaturized MS like RGM-109 Heavygun and F90 Gundam F90.[8]
