The RGM-79 Light-Type Guncannon (RGM-79 軽キャノン Kei Kyanon?), also known as Light Cannon, is a Mobile Suit (MS) used by the Earth Federation Forces (EFF) during the One Year War. It first appears in the movie Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- and featured in the Television Series of the movie.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
The Light Cannon was one of the many mass production model of the EFF MS development plan.[2] Its design was chosen due to the destruction of the RX-78-01 01 Gundam, the theft of the RX-78-02 Gundam and their mothership, the Pegasus-class, forcing the Federation to use available operational data from their previously built test units. The result was a mobile suit that combined the mobility and close combat capabilities of the RX-78-01 01 Gundam, while retaining the firepower and durability of the RX-77-02 Guncannon.[2]
The Light Cannon sported relatively balanced performance, capable of engaging in both close combat and mid range combat.[3] The Light Cannon has modified arms, legs, and the backpack of the 01 Gundam, while the chest, head, and main armament comes from from the Guncannon. The Gundam-like backpack sported a beam saber on the left side, with a beam cannon on the right side of the backpack. Like its predecessors, the Light Cannon also retains the Core Block System, which can act as escape craft system ensuring its pilot survival.[2] Despite this, the Light Cannon overall combat performance is considered to be inferior to Zeon's gMS-01 Gelgoog by both Federation and Zeon pilots.
Armaments[]
- Beam Cannon
- The primary armament of the Light Cannon is a single beam cannon model similar to the one used by RX-77-02 Guncannon, mounted over the right shoulder. This beam cannon is used for mid-range fire support.
- Beam Saber
- The beam saber is a small device stored on the back, and is able to be held in the mobile suit's hands when deployed out and is powered by a rechargeable energy capacitor. It emits high-energy Minovsky particles to form a blade-shaped I-field (via manipulation of electromagnetic fields), and then fills this I-field shell with superheated Minovsky particle plasma to produce an effective cutting blade. It is the same model of beam saber used by the Gundam.
- Beam Rifle
- A beam rifle model first used by the RX-77-02 Guncannon that is specialized for mid range combat.
- Gundam Hammer
- A mobile suit sized flail-type weapon with a long chain and anchor-shaped grip attached to a spiked iron ball. The weapon could either be thrown or swung around the mobile suit itself to damage the enemy units.
Special Equipment & Features[]
- The Light Cannon is equipped with a central block in the torso, which houses the mobile suit's cockpit, control systems and main power source. This core block can eject in case of emergency and unfold into a small Core Fighter, allowing the pilot to either escape safely, or continue fighting in a limited capacity.
- Extenders
- The Light Cannon is equipped with various hardpoints, found on its shoulder pauldrons, elbows, and knees, which can be used to mount different types of equipment including weapons and shields.
- Grappling Hook
- A special equipment unique to Shiiko Sugai's unit, installed onto the mobile suit's arms, which shoots out a tether from the fingers that can attach itself to objects including mobile suits. It is an essential part of Shiiko's signature "Stigma Attack", a maneuver which uses the tether to perform difficult maneuvers around enemy mobile suits, including firing beam rifles remotely via the tether from unexpected angles.
History[]
in U.C. 0079 the Light Cannon was deployed and became the Earth Federation's main mass-produced MS, participating in numerous battles against the Principality of Zeon. During the First Battle of Solomon, a tri-colored Light Cannon piloted by Sayla Mass was responsible for the death of Zeon Vice Admiral Dozle Zabi, the commander in charge of Solomon base.[3] Sayla's Light Cannon would also participate in the defense of Solomon during the operation to drop Solomon on Zeon's lunar base Granada. During the battle it manage to ambush Char Aznable's gMS-α Red Gundam using the Gundam Hammer, but due to the Gundam's superior performance, its right arm was sliced off by the Red Gundam's beam saber. Sayla's unit was forced to retreat after the damage it sustained, collapsing the nearby tunnel using her unit's beam cannon to cover the withdrawal.[3]
