It has added armor on the chest and shoulders as they are considered to be more exposed to enemy attacks, compared to the lower body which tends to be concealed by the trees. To compensate for the added weight, it has a backpack with higher thrust. As the added armor and higher thrust produced excellent results, similar measures are adopted for the [[RGM-79SP GM Sniper II]] that was developed later. In addition to weapons that emphasize anti-MS combat in close-range, the GM Spartan also has various equipment to improve concealment, such as infrared shielding sheet, Minovsky particle scattering pod, and smoke dischargers.
The GM Spartan was a variant of the RGM-79 GM fitted with a different backpack and extra armor on the front of its body, wire-guided anti-MS missiles on its right shoulder, Minovsky particle dispersion pods, and infra-red camouflage fabric on its back. On its head visor it's provided of an infrared interception sheet in order to enable IR radar detection.

Template:Infobox/Mobile Weapon Ver.2 The RGM-79S GM Spartan was created by Hitoshi Fukuchi for the Fukuchi Mobile Suit Station (FMS) feature in Bandai's Model Journal 119 (June 1989) magazine.

To compensate for the added weight, it has a backpack with higher thrust. As the added armor and higher thrust produced excellent results, similar measures are adopted for the RGM-79SP GM Sniper II that was developed later. In addition to weapons that emphasize anti-MS combat in close-range, the GM Spartan also has various equipment to improve concealment, such as infrared shielding sheet, Minovsky particle scattering pod, and smoke dischargers.
